"old money".

A while back, while cleaning out the 51 Chevy Business Coupe I bought from a DFW, Texas HAMBER, I found a 1951 dime AND a 1958 quarter. TODAY, at the grocery store, I found 92 cents in pennies, ****tered about a parking space. ONE OF THEM WAS A 1943 WAR PENNY, THE ZINC TYPE! Another NINE of them were from 1957, and from various mints. Put them with the rest of my "old money". Today, so far, has been a good day. Butch/56sedandelivery.

 

WOW Im not the only one that will stop and pick up a penny. I get made fun of for doing that.

 

I think the 1943 penny is actually steel. Check it with a magnet!

After a while, pennies were not just all copper, but a copper/ zinc blend. I think now they are more zinc than copper.

I like finding money..even one penny at a time is just fine.

If you want to have some fun, braze a 2-3 inch lag bolt to a quarter and pound it into the asphalt somewhere where alot of people walk by.

Just sit there and watch them try to pick it up..

 

I think the changeover was 1986.


Did you know there is a ban on s****ping/exporting pennies since it takes more than a penny to make one?

 

kinda makes you wonder why we haven't done away with them, doesn't it?

 

I used to metal detect regularily and have found tons of old coins. Oldest American coin was 1819 penny.Sold a 1887 Canadian quarter for $150.00! Spend my treasure hunting days looking for vintage tin now....

 

Wow, i must be getting really old. money from the 50's doesn't seem old to me. I remember getting Indian Head pennies, Mercury head dimes and real Buffalo nickles in change and then spending them again!!! But that was when the money from the 50's was still new stuff!!!

 

back in the late 50s, early 60s in Lewiston, Idaho (and sometimes Clarkston), if you paid for a $2 purchase with a $10 bill, you'd get back two silver dollars and a five. Most were Morgans, but there was a bunch of them earlier than that. Pity I was too busy buying 75¢ burger/fries/shake combos or saving for scavenger pipes to keep some of that heavy change for nowadays....

Back when I was an apprentice Machinist, about 1961,I made a jig, and ground some pennys in half,I then had them silver soldered together, to make two headed pennies. My buddy and I would get somebody to flip for coffee (5 cents) and we won all the time for about 3 months, until I spent or lost my penny.
So, if you find a 2 headed penny that could be where it came from.

"Find a penny, pick it up, the rest of the day you'll have good luck."

several years before she p***ed away, My Mom started telling the grand kids... "find a penny, pick it up, and think of grandma " they all took to it and now 10 yrs. after shes gone, all the kids and grandkids think of her daily. I pick up pennies almost daily, and think of Mom.

I've been collecting old 40's money for quite some time. I want to be prepared for when time travel becomes a reality and go back and get some of those $25.00 1932 Fords.

guess I'll have to buy an old barn to put them in so they will be there when I come back to present time... haven't quite figured out all the logistics yet, but when I do it will be the barn find thread to end all barn find threads..

As for the 1943's they were zinc plated steel

Now they are copper plated zinc

 

I saw a 51 Merc on the road today but I didnt take a picture of it because it has 90 Caddy tillights in it. Maybe I should have.
