I am so glad to see Harvey is comming back for the rest of the world to see even though I may never see it again as I live 2000 miles away from it and 45 years ago.

Thanks for posting all the pix, Doug. I gave you the wrong date, I took these photos during our meeting with Jim last Thursday, May 14th. As you all can see, construction is moving along FAST!

Construction is moving along FAST! Lot of thinking has gone into this rebuild/repair.
I know that there are going to be some things and differences in the rear of the building that most will not like as it never was like that, so be prepared. The front and corner views will look like the did in its 1st incarnation.
Do what you guys can to support the counter and the drive in-car hop area as we still fight for those very hard, right down to the differences in terrazo size for the counter curb and the table out line area and the economic liablilty when it comes time to hanging trays on street/hot rodders/customs killer paint jobs. (Jim is worried about that) Let me know your thoughts on this ok?
Thanks for hangiing in the with The Coalition to Rebuild The Broiler. We're almost there!

Who would've believed we'd actually be here watching the Broiler go back UP! How cool is that?! Ah..the Broiler, even with that familiar lettering up there, I'm gonna have to keep reminding myself that this is a brand new restaurant with a lot of great history. And Jim's gotta make it work in the 21st century so he's incorporating conveniences like a new drive-thru, along with the 50s style drive-in that we all wanted. It's a real leap of faith.

That is awesome to see it go back up. Some more pics of it up and running for sure. Way up here in Canada we love the old drive inns. A lot of ours have allso been tore down.

Kevin, its amazing the lengths that you and everyone else involved are going to to bring the Broiler back. A big thanks is owed to you guys !

  13. Is there a mailing list or something where we can get updates on the status of the opening? I'd fly down for it . . .

    Steve

PS - don't know if anybody mentioned it but I found another film that used Harvey's - check out "The Game" with Michael Douglas

It's amazing how fast this is going up. The pics on May 1 are about what it looked like when I drove by a month ago. Seems like it's progressed so much since then. Incredible! I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since I was cruising there in my 56 Ford. What a great story!

I have been following this thread. Im glad it worked out for the best.me and my wife, and another couple are going to be out that way in the early fall. Its going to be a total site seeing trip. The whiskey, hollywood blvd, and the broiler are tops on my list. Could you guys tell me what hot rod shops are traveler friendly, not to bug em or nothin just to get some shirts, and ogle.

Hi everybody, I'm downloading my pix now so we can see how construction's coming along. Will send them over to Mazooma to post (thanks again, Doug!).

I had fun driving down with my Dad down yesterday. Last time he was on site the Broiler was still in its demo'd state so he was very impressed, and really got a kick out of watching the construction work. By the time we left there was shade under the canopy again!

Here's the photos from Adriene.....here's her note:

    Jim's incredible find -- a 12 FOOT VINTAGE BOB -- THAT ROTATES!!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW THIS IS GONNA LOOK UP THERE WHERE THE FAT BOY STOOD?!

Well, yes Adriene, we like most anything that rotates, so, yes, gonna be cool!

the 12 foot rotating Big Boy....

Just amazing to see it come back to life like that. I was thinkin how weird it must be to see that burger perching above your neighbor's fence, the dogs going nuts, even I'd be salivatin'. Thanks so much for the extensive updates! The signage will still beckon greatly from Firestone and beyond.

Hmm, yes...definitely the right audience for things that rotate. ;-) I was telling Kevin how much I appreciate the HAMB and how exciting it is that we all get to cheer the project on together as we get closer and closer to the finish line. It's been such a long road.

It looks like we've got a date for the grand opening event that we're coordinating with Jim and Danny White of The Last Rock and Roll Show -- September 19th, so mark your calendars. It's gonna be something else, Route 66 cruise, 50s sock hop...and more! So stand by, we'll be filling you in on the details in the coming weeks.

When I was there on Friday, alot was going on. I took many pics. I tried to email them to Mazooma, can't figure out why I can't copy and paste them to my hotmail acct to send them? I'm glad that Adriene E'd these images including her Pops in the sign shop. One really cannot get the effect until they actually see or experienced what had transpired over the course of 30 months. It truly is surreal to live in a time when something that we as a board have fought so very hard for and see it return .
Thank Ryan for the HAMB and all of you for supporting our efforts. Can't wait for the big day! Harvey,Fat Boy and Big Boy will welcome us all in!

  22. cant wait....this is going to be well worth the drive, hope its the same weekend as the swapmeet.............my respects to CK and his crew for bustin their ass's on this

It was so nice to meet you, CrazyDaddyO, and all the folks who drove out to Bob's last night. The parking lot was filled with all sorts of stunning vehicles! Joe sends his thanks and may turn this into a weekly event on Saturdays from 5-8pm.

If you don't think "THEY" already tell you what you can and cannot do with your own property, just check your local zoning laws!

  26. Went to the Bob's in Signal Hill Saturday night for the little cruise deal. Not a lot of cars but a good time AND a Big Boy Combo. Got to meet and talk to Cyclone Kevin for quite a while. Nice guy and we have "Little T Birds" in common, in fact my T Bird is what brought him over to talk. Can't wait for the opening!

Zoning laws are there for a reason in cities like Downey. It's those laws that allowed this wonderful diner to be rebuilt and with much cooperation from the City of Downey. You have to give the City of Downey much credit here along with Jim, the current owner, and of course Kevin, Adriene and all those so involved with the historic concerns of the property.
Besides the dirtbag that tried to tear it down without a permit, I'd have to say tht everyone involved showed much character and goodwill.

I agree with you, Mazooma, but in many instances, zoning laws have become nuisance laws. An example would be my case. I live on 9 acres, in the country, at the very dead end of a poorly maintained dirt road. I have my own septic and water systems, have no fire protection (not hydrants) and pay a private garbage collection co. So you can see, I get very little return on my property tax dollars. I had my shop built up to code and paid all the fees involved, and it passed code. When I retired and closed my trim shop, I tried to get permits to do dealer only work from my home shop. Guess what...not zoned properly for upholstery work! Seems like, today in 2009, eventhough I paid hard earned money for this place, I don't really own it...just renting from the County of Bibb. Oh yeah, my rent (property tax) just went up again.
I think what you guys have done is wonderful! Too much of what made the United States great has already been destroyed in the name of progress. My most sincere congrats. to everyone involved in your small victory that benefits all of us.:)
