It has really been a good laid back weekend around here. We have had a cookout with family every day. We started out by placing flags on all the veterans graves at 5 cemeteries around here same as every year. Probably around a hundred flags or so including this one of my late father in law. These folks helped keep us a free country and it is good to remember them.<center>

Then we came back to our home. We live in a small dusty little town about 400 people and it is about 18 miles from Salina, KS where we work and shop. About 30 friends and family joined us for lunch today. <center>

We had cold drinks of iced tea, lemonade, and cold beer. Roasted whole pork loins, salads, cakes, and 3 gallons of homemade ice cream. Yum.....<center>

Some of the guest drove their old cars. We had about 10 of them. I live across from the Catholic Church so we have alot of parking. <center>

After eating I had the brilliant idea that we should have our own parade. I was the self appointed Grand Marshall and led the way thru the empty downtown. <center>

Damn - now I gotta go get something to eat. Great way to spend Memorial Day, remembering what it is really about and hanging with your buddies - throw a few hot rods in the mix and simmer for several hours... what a great recipe!

Then we came back home and part of us went and picked up all the flags and put them in storage to be brought out again next year. The American Legion members used to do this service but they got too old and so many of them have passed away. So several of us locals just do it on our own.

Yes, I do. It belongs to my nephew Travis. Just had the 352 engine rebuilt and punched out to a 390 and has cool Cragars on it. <center>

Paul, you always have great stories and great pictures. Thanks for remembering those that passed. I went to the shop today and worked so hard (alone) that I didn't even stop to eat. Now I am really HUNGRY!!!

Took a while to load all your pictures with my slow dial-up connection, but well worth it. Thanks.

  20. I went 50 miles away to a really nice Memorial day service at a large cemetery.I had lunch and picked up siding for a portion of the house. I didn't have a parade and I didn't have guests to install the siding but I still had a good day. Memorial day is my favorite holiday. As an American, I am proudest of the fact that someone was willing to give their life for our lifestyle. That to me says how important freedom is. I am glad Poverty Flats had a great day.

Our friends Tom and Judy (who are the best friends you could ever have) own this very cool 49 Ford Tudor. It is very traditional with scallops and a finned out flattie under the hood.<center>
