Sometimes thats how long it takes. Its sometimes the difference between a mediocre kustom and a show-stopper. A straight car and a mirror. Be patient. Like MercMan said, he knows your anxious.

That is the worse thing that you can do. It looks like when you get through, you will have
something very kool and worth the wait. If you make him mad and he kicks you out of his
shop. Then someone else wil have to finish it and that is going to cost ya even more $$$$
and time. I can give you a list of names of guys that wasn't paitent and it cost them dearly.
Some of them never finished the project.

This is one of the reasons why guys are not into kustoms, somwtimes it takes a lot of time and patience to be kool. It is going to be worth the wait...

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

  5. I need to go sit in my truck and recite aloud "Picture this... A 1951 Mercury custom adorned with freshly rechromed bumpers, and covered with a mile-deep gloss black paint job. 1953 Chrysler taillights add a subtle classy look out aft while not looking overly done. John Ryan is a lucky man and needs to patient because Mick told him to..." :)

Buy the guy a pizza and a hooker.

  10. Haha maybe we should go to Diamonds or another strip joint, not a bad idea.

I'm working on a different grille idea right now. I like to have too many choices.

That is the thing about bodywork...The guys who are good at it never seem to be in a great big hurry to do it.

It took me more than six months on my Merc and I hit it hard 3 hours every night and about 20 hours a weekend. It gave me a pretty good understanding why a good paint job takes a year and costs 15K.

If I had it to do over, I would have come up with 15K and paid someone who knew what they were doing..My elbows, wrists and shoulders still hurt from sanding...

Good luck with your car, the wait will be worth it I'm sure.

  12. I'm going to change my screen name to "Instant Gratification."

  13. Paul the body guy was working on the car and my replacement hood. He said the new hood is like .5 inches longer in front, which means my front sheetmetal has to be slightly reworked. What probably happened is that my old hood was a little f'd in an accident and the the whole front end was fixed a little funny. Ugh. Car should look awesome once painted (I need to keep repeating that to myself).

I also have been talking to Dave Martinez about doing my interior, I have a good feeling about him.

Do you ever go to the shop to see the progress/take pics? I seem to remember you saying it was a ways away or something...I think most of us are expecting photos with progress...

  15. Good point, I might be by the car this week, or possibly next week. I want to see if these Winfield skirts are decent or will need a bunch of work to fit on the car.

  16. Car is in final primer. I took a bunch of pics but what a dumby, didn't use the flash and I'm too lazy to tweak the pics tonight:

  17. Merc is lookin real good!!!!

  18. Hey Merc'ans, Do some 51's have their back window lower trim "radiused" on the corners? Looks to me like some have it rounded.

My pic of Jack Walker tribute car taken at Chicago WOW 2010:

I think it depends on how low the rear window is in relation to the top of the quarter panel. You may have to do the same thing.

  21. Thanks Ace. Once I get some rear window trim I can how it would work. Rounded corners might look better on the car since these customs are all about rounded corners and flowing lines.

That's the thing about finally seeing progress. It makes you forget about how fucking long it took to get there. Once you see this car in a color, you will kiss your paint guy on the mouth, I swear.

She looks great, I'm as ready as you are to see this thing done, the wait has been killin me...

Gonna be killer,it'll be worth all your wait!!!!

  28. John,
Have you thought about just using original 49 merc bezels, and frenching those. I think it would be less bodywork.

  29. 52' bezels are already welded onto the fenders. They are more work but I like the way they look more based on past research.
