So yesterday afternoon I finally had the '36 all blocked out, masked off, little pieces hung on the "clothesline" and ready to prime. I had 2 qts of 2K primer, and just enough catalyst and reducer to mix. No worries, right?

I mixed the first quart, sprayed a wet coat on everything and mixed up qt. no. 2. Filled the cup, leaving the other half in the mixing can. I shot the trunk lid, and started down the rear of the body, when the paint started looking very "dry". This immediately led to the guns pattern getting thin, then, no spray at all. What the...

I pulled the cup off, and to my horror saw that the entire cup of primer was about the consistancy of grey jello.:eek: The paint in the mixing cup was the same putty like glop. What happened was immediately apparant when I picked up the can of catalyst...I'd grabbed the wrong can, and used a "Kwik Prime" catalyst instead of the proper stuff. Of course, they were both on the bench, side by each, labels ALMOST identical, just a slightly different shade of brown. DOH!

So, another trip back to the paint store, another gallon of 2K and the CORRECT catalyst, and I'm now out to the shop to block the car out AGAIN. I think I'll do it dry, so as not to have to mask it off again, and I might as well shoot another guide coat while I'm at it. I don't need the entire gallon, but I'll be working on the Diamond T pretty soon (***uming I can ever get this roadster painted!) and it'll get used up. Nothing time and money won't fix.

I'm going to throw out the "KwikPrime" catalyst too...

Dammit is right. I felt pretty stupid. It also may have cost more than the C note for the primer, as my wife and I went car shopping as long as we were in town, and may have bought a new Ford Fusion...So, it's kind of a 25K gallon of primer...

Uh, yeah, what's that about? I post about a goofy, careless mistake that anyone of us here could have made, it sets me back a day, and as a coincidence, we buy a new car. Is that offensive? I guess I'm missing something...maybe I should have made some popcorn...

Been there done that. But look at the bright side. Think how straight that car will be with that extra blocking you are going to be doing!

  15. Man, at least it dried, my luck I would be stuck with a wet gelatinous coating!
Have I mentioned how much I hate dry sanding.....or wet.........
    Good luck man.
    Doc.

PS, What did we all miss? Whats what supposed to mean?

Thanks Doc. That's what the guy at the paint store said. I'm not the Lone Ranger making that mistake, he said it happens A LOT. I'm lucky in that I didn't have a chance to get much on the car, he told me some have managed to shoot alot on, and it inevitably alligators and peels, making a huge mess. I ended up wet sanding it all off, reblocking the entire care with 320, and I gotta say, it's arrow straight.:D So, it's a good thing. And from now on, I don't buy ANY primer other than 2K.

Looks like a post got removed.

I reversed the paint/thinner/hardener ratio once-waited for 2 weeks for the paint to dry. Finally gave it a scotcbrite and reducer bath, did it all over again. But I like your $25,000 primer story.

I cleared a whole car using wax and grease remover as the catalyst. It didnt work, the quart can of hardner looked just like can of wax and grease. Spent 3 days strippin the gooey **** off of it 2 more days re paintin and around $250 on more materials. The can of wax and grease remover ended up againts the wall in the alley

That sux bro. Been there. Mostly with basecoat reactive reducer being just a few days too old...and it's the last qt of the custom mixed color, so don't feel like the Lone Ranger. It happens. Glad you can fix it.

You too? I did EXACTLY that once! I'm not feeling nearly as dumb now :D! If I EVER get around to mixing the color and clear for this thing, I'm going to check and recheck what I'm using! BTW I tipped the gallon of pre cleaner I had this morning over with the air hose. Of course the top was off and it all ran out before I realized it'd been tangled up with the hose on the other side of the car. So, since I was in town to sign the paperwork for the Fusion, I stopped at the paint store. Again.

The Fusion is a pretty good look'n car. At first I didn't like it, I think because I REALLY liked the Accord coupe we drove. Looking at it today when I was at the Ford store, it grew on me. It's the "sport" package which gets 18" wheels and big fat tires, it's almost 2" lower than it's regular cousins, nice little air dam on the front and a flippy little spoiler on the decl lid. The interior is cool too, leather with cloth inserts, the cloth is a sort of red and black checked pattern, and the seats are black with red stiching. It's pretty striking. A huge rebate from Ford and practically free financing from my credit union helps out too. My son is happy 'cause we're giving him the PT Cruiser it's replacing which also means the '62 Impala is coming home, which makes me happy, 'cause I like it!

Anywho, it does make a funny $25,000 primer story.

Sounds like your wife is trying to keep you out of the garage: Mess up and it'll cost you $25K:D In all seriousness, it sounds like you got your paint situation squared and a new ride to boot-Score!

I'm really good at loading up the gun and then getting a phone call or having someone stop by thus rendering me with a cup of jello. One time I had the compressor break in the middle of spraying and by the time I got the thing fixed, I had chunky soup. **** happens with materials with pot lives.

I did it once with a product called AMACK (i think that's how it was spelled) . Basically it was like shooting a thin layer of a very hard bondo like material. I shot two coats and the phone rang. She wanted to chat and i was feeling ***** so I kicked my shoes off and rambled for a while to set up that nights rendezvous. Well after an hour or so I went back out and to my horror, it had not only gone off in the gun put there was no way to clean it. Took it to the paint store and the guy who did the paint gun repairs said i now had a very nice $400.00 Binks Paper Weight!

All I'm going to say is that the guy who tells us he has never made a mistake is the one who has never done anything.

I've made my share and most of them have been educational experiences.

my personal favorite here of late is the discovery that "slow" activator is not nearly slow enough.

Its hot in Texas... The paint shop better have A/C by the time I get down there!!

They say to add some retarder when thats the case. It comes natural with me, I don't need to add anything... :D
