KKOA never comes west? Is this WCK territory? Kansas here I (might) come....

Reason I ask is that I'm sure there are KKOA members who live out west and never go to the shows because of distance. Or I could be wrong.

Another reason I'm asking is I am thinking about taking the Caddy for its last show(before I tuck it away) to Kansas. I talked about it to a couple HAMBers last weekend at SM. Anyone ever caravan there?

1,700 miles but it would be the trip of a lifetime......

I met a guy from CA last year at our Salina KKOA Lead Sled Show who drove his car there. What was his name......he is a friend of BobK. Had a nice car too.

If you're referring to the KKOA event in Salina KS in July it's an AWESOME event. Hot as hell with uncomfortable humidity BUT the event is held at a wonderful park with LOTS of gr*** and trees....something more promotors should take into account. The motels in the area have not jacked the rates up. The place we stay at is still $60 bucks and we are splinting that 4 ways.:D

It will be nice to finally meet you and check out your Caddy.

Exactly, the show in Salina, Kansas. Anyone from Cali drive there? Sounds like this show is the heaven show for the Traditional Kustoms.

    Do the roadtrip!
I drove my ranchero To Austin this year from Los Angeles for the roundup and had a blast! I'd love to do a KKOA show some day! I liked the roundup so much I'm going to try and make it my annual roadtrip!

Being burned out on local shows and getting to see a fresh batch of cars was VERY refreshing!

The KKOA used to have a show in SOlvang, and tried to do something with Bailon, in his town. They never took off, low attendance. I guess Cali guys won't go to any shows that are too far away!
Anyway, after insulting my West Coast friends, I used to go the Leadsled Specataculars just about every year, from about 1983. First with my chopped 55 Olds, then my mild 54 Chevy, then back to the Olds. The national one is always held in the midwest..it used to float around a bit, so it was closer to the west one year, north another, south, then east. Recently, it's been hanging around in one place for a few years, Salina is the most recent one. In the past, it was Holland MI, Lansing MI, Hamilton OH, Springfield OH, Springfiled MO, Des Moines, Huntsville AL, Springfield IL, Davenport IO.
The shows always bring out the tops in Kustoms, even if the attendance numbers aren't as high as other events. I ALWAYS enjoyed the road trips, even if I went by myself (lots of East Coasters are afraid to drive their cars that far, too!). You meet so many nice people on the road, esp. if you stay off the main highways. \I haven't attended a Kansas one yet...might try to make it out there this year, if the Dodge cooperates, though. It might be the farthest one for me, probably as many miles as you'd travel. Previously, the Springfield MO trip was the longest...over 2000 miles to get there...but not in a straight line, I did some sightseeing.
    Go for it!

Also, I know Bill Hines and family drive every year to Salina. And Denise, we will try to get some better weather for you this year. Don't know why it was so hot last year.....

We had a great time last year and look forward to making it out again this year. Hopefully we'll get Big Olds out there this year!

I think BobK's friend that drives from Cali is the guy on the left of this picture looking towards the camera. Seems like he drives a white Olds maybe? I remember talking to him last year.

The guy you are thinking of is from Norwalk Ca and his name is Dan Cuellar, he is one of the oringinal members of the Auto Butchers club. He drives his Chevy everywhere, even more than I do.

    OK, now it's there.

That's Dan, to the left of Megan sitting in my flag chair. Sitting in back of him with the straw hat on is Walt Leeman from Grand Junction Co. he has a green chevy fleetline that one one of the awards in Salina.

Can't wait for this year, I think I'll drive the Vette for a change.

Hahahaha...Chopolds, I like the part about "I guess Cali guys won't go to any shows that are too far away!" I talked to a couple of "kustom guys" there in Santa Maria and asked if they'd ever taken their cars east to an event/show, they flat told me "We don't ever drive past the Cali border." And that was the end of that converstion.

Yeah Brian, we'd let you tag along with us to Salina...we "drive" our cars everywhere and from Denver to Salina, Kansas, it's a 7 hour trip. BTW Brian, while you were spending a few hours driving home from S.M Sunday afternoon, it took us two days to get home from S.M...we left S.M at 6 PM after we packed up my son's Dichrome stuff...we spent Sunday nite in Ventura (taffic was bumper to bumper, packed, from Santa Barbara all the way to L.A.), got into Ventura at 9 PM. We left Ventura at 7:30 AM, drove to Santa Clarita, then Barstow and on to Las Vegas. Up thru the Virgin River Canyon and then to Cedar City, Utah -- stopped drving at 6 PM), spent the nite there. Traffic from Las Vegas was nuts, guess all those that lived in Salt Lake were heading home from the holiday weekend in Vegas... left there at 8:30 AM and rolled into Denver at 9:00 PM that nite...

Salina is a good show, it's been growing each year since they moved it there...however, there'll never have the kind of numbers S.M. pulls in simply becuz the Midwest does not have the numbers of car guys living in the same area as Cali guys do...but it's the closest event to trad kustoms we have...

All of us ColoRODo guys HAVE to drive to events, we're one of the citys that is far away from every major event...that's just the way it is around here.

Let us know if and when you're coming...your Caddy would be a big hit in Salina (AND everywhere between here and there...!!!)

Yes, Dan. I remember him now. Nice guy too. This show rocks. I got to meet famous people like BobK, Moriarty, Roger Jeter, Bill Hines, Gene Winfield, George Barris, Darryl Starbird, and my favorite girls Megan and Denise.

  20. That's funny Roger, when we went to Paso in '03 we had the same conversation with quite a few people. They couldn't believe that we DROVE our old cars "all the way from Colorado!" We saw plenty of cars with California plates roll in on trailers. Had a good chuckle about that one.

We have travelled quite a few places, but not like 40StudeDude and his brother Dan.

Paso John is also a road warrior. He has gone to Paso and Santa Maria almost every year since '94--driving out every year until last year. He said he liked how fast you get out there on a plane vs. driving, but it just wasn't as much fun as when you roll out in your sled. E

It's permenantly on my calander! I wouldn't miss it. Think I'll bring the wagon and show off the digger this year. If I can get the engine together in time it'd be a lot of fun to show off Friday evening!
