Whilst in the library, this morning, I was looking through the 1987 issue of Street Rodder and turned to page 90 to see the coolest model A pickup*. When I saw this the first time around I thought it might be the coolest hot rod ever, still rate it pretty darn high. The late Steve Hendrickson (SUCKS he's gone!), wrote and photog'd the piece about this kid (19 at the time). Said he was heading to CA to work for Boyd. He's the guy that did the giant mural at Boyd's old place. Very talented with a great eye for style, heck he's close to my age now. What's he doing? Is he a HAMB'r?

*not a "HAMB trad car" but trad-style hot rod to me....stupid low, great rake, subtle modifications, bitchin' pickup.

  2. Jim, I just saw that the other day too! I remember when his pickup was featured - I was so jealous that a young kid had such a great opportunity - I'd like to know what ever became of him and the truck as well.

His brother lives in SoCal and has a bitchin Falcon. I think Dustin moved back to Indiana. But I will find out.

Seems both of 'em have joined the dark side (HUBgarage). I can't figure out how to send a PM to him (there is a "send a PM button" but it does not seem to launch any text boxes. I'm dumb, I know....)

One feature the Hub has that the Hamb does not, is instant buddys with THE Chris Jacobs!

I saw his brothers Falcon (did not know it at the time) at the SoCal open house a couple years back. Those guys have the eye (Im not commenting on the beemer though).

Hey kids, I'm still alive. I live in Hollywood CA and have for the past 5 or 6 years, 35 minutes (minus california traffic) from my brother Jason.

I still put cars together, mostly to flip. Ive never been big on keeping stuff for very long. I think the longest Ive ever owned something may have been my 29 black closed cab and even that I think I sold after a couple of years. The truck moved on to Dave Gale. He sold it to Tracy Tailor, who still owns it, I think. Dave cast a mold of the truck and started mass producing them in black primer.

Thanks for all the kind words!

Thanks for checking in Dust'n. One of those Dave Gale pickups is here in Phoenix, can't remember the guy who owns it.

You get stance, haha, bless you!

I admit it... I love that truck.

  9. Not embarrassed to admit that I dig that PU. Elegant, understated and pretty damned sneaky looking. I like it a lot.

I'm also a fan. Love Dave Gale's work, too. Glad you're still buildin' stuff, Dustin! You inspired a bunch of us...

Welcome to the HAMB Dustin - maybe some of the good HAMB style will rub off and we'll get to see some bitchin trad rides from ya!

  15. Jeem, what month SR was that? I'd like to look it up, as I don't remember that truck....never thought much about CC pickups either, but since I have a 28 now, THAT would be the direction I'd like to take it.

under the hood is an early 4 banger out of a mustang 2...Boyd pulled it out of a hot rod he built and asked me if I wanted it. it looked like a million bucks(cut in half) and I really didnt care if the truck was fast. Dave Gale continued using the same engines in all the black primered trucks he built after. very little room in them, so creativity was at a minumum.

    Jeem,

I seem to remember a similarly styled (i.e. bitchin) '47 or '48 Chevy coupe was featured in the same issue, or am I just hallucinating?

No Sir, didn't see one in there. You've piqued my curiosity, those cars are either very cool or very ghastly!

Maybe the truck and the coupe were featured together in a different magazine, or maybe I'm having an 80's flashback? It seems like the Chevy coupe was blacked out, lowered to the ground, with satin finished early Boyd wheels?

    Ryan,
a friend of mine, Dave Finke, owns the 48 Chevy. my dad has always had a hard-on for black paint, and he not only influenced a bunch of hot rods conceived around the time my truck was finished, he literally helped build all those black cars. we need to round up some shots of some of those vehicles...and yes, the 48 and my 29 were in a few magazines together. your 80's flashbacks are amazingly accurate, as your description is perfect of Dave's 48 Chevy coupe. I used to come up with a concept, supply a colored rendering, Boyd supplied the wheels and other odds and ends, and my Dad did a lot of the heavy construction. bottom line, I wanted to put out cars that looked a certain way and my Dad and I did what ever it took to make them happen.

thanks for all the kind words...

Anyone else find it amazing that one person can post about a car they saw in a 20+ year old mag and want to know the whereabouts of the builder. Less than 5 hours later, the builder replies to the post.

    Wow!

Oh yea, the truck is cool too.

believe it or not, I had multiple texts to my cell phone, two phone calls, and like fifteen emails from friends saying, "they are talking about you on jalopy journal" I thought it was an old posting till I became a member yesterday and logged on.

this has literally made my month...thanks for all the kind words about the truck. the current owner wont even talk to me. its so strange when I see him at shows.

thanks, ill pass that along to my dad. he's driving a good looking 32 full fendered roadster these days. the really cool car he owns is the 48 chevy woody that was a barn find. it has like 36,000 original miles and looks amazing. you can see his stuff and my brothers on the site below...
