Bought this car 3 years ago. Well, when I go it apart, needless to say, many were there before me. So, I was able to repair the fenders, (actually found a NOS front fender 40 miles from my house), repaired the doors, boxed the frame, built the SBC engine, then moved from MI to South Carorlina. Now after a 3 years of building a house, garage, work shop, IT IS TIME TO GET SOME WORK DONE, WHOOPEE!!!! So here are some pix of my Es***. Now after have time( 3 years) to mull over the project I would like some opinions on my ideas. 1.. Stretch the body 16 and frame inches and make a Sedanca-de-Ville style body. This would require a set of center door posts, hint: anyone got a pair. 2. Put an inline 6 as the engine. This would require lengthening the front frame 14 inches. Then I would need to make new side covers and hood. 3. Doing the wood top is no big deal, I am a cabinet maker( by hobby) So, what do you think of A MAPLE WOOD INTERIOR TOP. just a thought. As always, one can expect any wonder of sugestions from the HAMB. So let's here them. Dan Marx Rembert, SC (just south of Camden) dlmarx@bellsouth.net
a buddy of mine has another one of those all complete and original if you ever need parts...he wanted 400 bucks for it
Sounds like an interesting project, and you have a great start with those parts! One thing...why does the front of the frame need an extra 14" to run a straight 6? That seems a bit excessive to me. I have a Dodge slant-6 in my '27 Es*** and the frame wasn't stretched at all. They recessed the firewall about 10", though. Had they mounted it properly they could have gotten away with a minimal recess to the firewall.
I am not interested in recessing the fire wall. In fact, if I keep the SBC, I am going to go with a front mount distributor. I really don't like it when the distributor is 'buried" and not accessible. I will relook at the measurements. Thanks dan
http://www.summersbrothersracing.com/distributor%20drives.htm check it out..and thats just one way to do it..i will not bore you with the many ways to get this done..some of them are not "traditional"..but..its there for us to use
About the Es*** do they originally come with an I -beam front Axle? theres one running around the Monroe Michigan Area..and he has the same front suspension set up as you do.. personally if it came with an I-Beam..i would go back to that..but thats just me cool project..keep us posted
Just a follow-up, I was told that 28/29 Ford fenders will fit the '28 Es***. Anyone seen this done? I still need a left front fender. Dan dlmarx@bellsouth.net
there is a guy in MA. that took a 1930 es*** 2 dr coach/sedan, and streched it adding a set of doors. he runs an sbc with caddilac interior. if you want his info let me know, ill have to dig it up. guy owns a truck/bus body shop. i got some original parts from him for my 31 coupe.
Wow, nice find. I have a '29 Es*** rumble seat coupe, or most of it anyways! I need both doors though and a windshield frame. Any help would be appreciated. Mine was just a shell, or rather, front shell and rear shell. No floor structure, no frame, nothing else! I used a front 1/3 of a model A frame and finished it with 4 x 2 box tubing, have an Inline 6 from a '69 Camaro and a T-5 B/W from a Chevy S-10. Front straight axle from a Ford '49 P/U and a rear from the S-10 truck 4 x 4. Still a long way to go. The sticky part for me is what to do for a roof. I really don't want a wood roof. I have a build thread on Club Hot Rod forums under Shop Talk, http://www.clubhotrod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39457 I
I've got a slightly different option for you to consider. Why not keep the body as-is and lengthen the front (front fenders and hood) instead? Then use a straight 8 engine. Olds or Packard or Pontiac or Chrysler. Buick if you gotta have OH valves. But your original idea is not too bad, either.
