Do you enjoy building more than driving?

It's a sunny Sunday morning here in NC and I've been in the shop polishing and waxing my Ace of Spades Modified roadster, which I haven't driven in about a year and a half. I've also got to do the same for the other rides. But I got thinking while doing this task; how many others enjoy building more than driving ?

I'm NOT saying I don't enjoy getting in the wind, I do. But I seem to be happiest when the smell of burning steel permeates the shop. Of course in a perfect world I would have a balance of both, but it's hard to do when you're consumed by the latest build.

So, how many other builders feel the same way?

In Michigan you better enjoy building in the winter cause your not going to be driving them much. In the summer you can enjoy driving them because you don't want to miss any of the nice weather.

I have a unkle that builds cars and then sells them right when he is done. I asked him why does he sell them asap. He says that he enjoys building the ride and the only time he likes to drive them is the maiden run...

Nope...just the opposite, love the drive!

  6. Hmmmn...I have been told the same thing, that shortly after they are roadworthy, I sell them and on to the next project. Kinda like a jigsaw puzzle in a way.......once they are done. But, the shop truck was bought with a covet, that it can only be sold back into our group, besides, it now has our store logo on the side and I think it will stick around for awhile. Building other folks projects is a good way to keep fresh cars in the stables.

I've always been consumed with building things. when they are finished something just gets lost when there is nothing else to do but drive. I do enjoy my '32 2dr and time out on the road is just the best. Howwever, I'm continually building things in my head even when I'm going down the road. Like fuelpump said, you'd better like building living here in Michigan, 'cause if you don't the bar or bowling is about the only alternative.

I enjoy building more , probably why i never finish any thing

  11. My buddies are always asking why I'm not driving my modified. They can't seem to understand that I enjoy improving, changing, and adding things to it as much as I enjoy the driving part.

    It's my hobby ! :)

I'll go one step further and state that they're two aspects of a whole item. Kind of a yin-yang arrangement. For me, at least...

In between. I like sorting them out. In many ways it's the most challenging.

wanna say both,,but there is something in taking an image from your mind and creating something whole,,the finished product is wonderful,,then after driving a while ,,time to create yet again

If I build a car, it's because it is exactly what I want to drive. I hate the build part, however, since my builds, I have been able to sell them after I got tired of them and bought drivers that only needed a little more work. Tooling down the coast, with or without your buds is the best. Stopping at places to explore.

IMO the drive is the result of the creative process when you can realize the completion of the build. I built my 3W in '82 from a decade of parts collection and I still make improvements as needed. It's been wrecked and rebuilt and I still won't sell it. My roadster was completed in April of '08 just before the Pasadena Roadster Run. I collected parts for two years and did a three month assembly on the build. The only time I park my cars is at the LA Roadster Fathers Day event. All other times they are driven on long trips. So my opinion on the build verses drive subject is I really enjoy both. Hot Rods are never completely done and driving them is the ultimate result of your own abilities. The FOGGER

I like to drive not build. Life is too short to work all the time......but somebody has to build 'em!

  23. I love the creating something from a pile of parts, getting it done (or drivable:D) and rippin around in it, then taking it apart and improving on it, then rippin around in it some, then repeating these steps over and over. And while your driving and building it you get cool and crazy ideas about your next builds too. Unlike you Michigan guys out here on the left coast we can go bowlin in the summer too:D
I don't do car shows either, never have never will. I'd rather build or cruise with my family or my buddies then go to a stupid park and sit.

I build one, drive it a year and park it in the back garage. There's eight of them out there now, and one under construction.

:D I enjoy the the driving and the building part the same. I like the detail work the best, putting on the final touches and then cruise, cruise, cruise it's exciting. I've built my last car from ground up, why, because I finally have the perfect cruiser a '49 Cadillac Sedanette. I'm just going to drive enjoy the road from this point forward. See you all in the cruising lanes out on the open road. :)

Always the driving, when I was into Harleys the point was to keep it on the road. Still is.

Although I'm not building mine, it's more of an ongoing "rebuild" of a survivor I prefer the driving. It's been off the road for 2 months now and it's making me nuts. The drive is a lot more satisfying though in something I have rebuilt and modified myself.
