I've been going to car shows since the early sixties. Took a decade or two off here and there. I attend them now because I enjoy looking at shiny, well-built cars.

I go to shows to break down on the way or on the way home. Sometimes its fun to lay under your car and get greasy in a different setting.:)

Funny, I always thought I was the show around here.
I mean, I drive up to an empty lot and park my car, and after a while more folks show up and park besides me. Before you know it there are over 400 cars surrounding mine, so, surely I must be some kind of god around then here eh? :D

Well ok maybe not  Maybe I just like to bullshit with friends and hang under hoods and talk cars & engines all night... That's about it I guess...

I go to the free ones to network, there is a lot good of info; paint, parts, services, etc Then there is the cars, gals, and B.S.

  8. It sounds like some of you have just been going to the wrong shows. The shows I go to are not about awards, they are about meeting new people, making new friends, checking out cool cars, and talking hot rods. I can't recall hearing anyone say I came here for a trophy . Go to shows like the Pile Up, Billetproof, Rust Revival, the HAMB Drags, and the Road Rocket Rumble and you will see what I'm talking about.

    Amen, Brother.

I made this comment yesterday at Billetproof Detroit as well. I told somebody I hadn't seen all the cars and didn't care. I saw Road Devils, HAMBers, Nightmares, the Usual Suspects, Poor Boys, Kingsmen, Screamin Demons, and all sorts in between.

It was a great time. Saw some great cars, too!

I go for several different reasons.
    1. To socialize with good friends who have like interests
    2. Swap meets
    3. To see different cars/trucks
    4. To get ideas for my projects or future projects
    5. Help support the Hobby
    6. Charity Events (example Frog Follies for Easter Seals and St. Judes)
    7. Just another opportunity to drive my car with my friends
    8. Another opportunity for Family time
    9. Most important "To buy the damn T-shirt":D
Seriously, those are a few but probably the most important reasons I go. As far as judging for trophies goes, I've always said I wash my trophies off the front of my car when I get home. I will not polish all day long in 80-90 degree weather on hot asphalt in order to win a $10.00 trophy for a 25- 45.00 dollar entry fee. The occasional "I like your car" or "nice ride" is better than any trophy I ever won. I usually don't make the local one day shows because thats usually what they are...a trophy hunt! The big shows I wouldn't be any competition so no worries there. The day they start judging fun and good times is when I will be in the running.

When it comes down to it, its just to each his own for his/her own reasons.

Hope to be on the road by the Frog Follies!

hehe, that's funny! but seriously, i go just to do something different for a change. i can only do the same old cruise night shit for so long. my attention span ain't what it used to be, and i'm usually the first one to leave 'cause it gets sooo boorrring. usually the ride to and from the show is the best part for me.

Because I like cars and people who are into cars.

  19. You beat me to it..... Since moving to Chicago I have been impressed that the crew around here in the Midwest is just a good bunch of people. The love of the cars brings it all together and gives a reason to hangout and have a good time. I think we should mention that most of the local shows are raising $$ for charity too! :D

I build showcars for a living so I have to go. I have to make sure my shit wins. For me though, I'll take a Billetproof setting over any other. The dragstrip is a distant 2nd. I usually spend more time in the pits bullshittin than watchin unless it's one of my close folk makin a pass...and I'll watch their whole class for info to pass on. Social? People? Uhh, lemme get back to ya on that.

I go to these shows to get Denise's cookies & Highlander's 120 proof "Apple Pie".

    Oh, yeah!

  23. I DO like shows that are not judged, or shows where you just pull up and park (or cruise!), and have a good time. The days of where I attend a local show, just to pay $20 or $30 to park my car, and have the participant judges bitch and moan about everything, are long gone. Life's too short for that bullshit.

In the end, I'd rather go to a cruise where people are ACTUALLY CRUISING! Hey, event organizers, if you put on something like THAT, then you'll get some participation!

  24. I have to admit I got burned out on going to shows many moons ago, The trophy shows that is. Getting up early to put out a chunk of dough, just to sit in the sun and hear car owners rip on others guys cars all day, just to get to trophy time and have those people all pissed off at the end of the day.
When I got my rusty old chevy back on the road I was afraid to take it out in public let alone ever go to a show again. This is when people started telling me about the pile-up. (I had dropped out of the car scene for a while) I never would of dreamed of there being shows out there where junk was appreciated for what it was....
I very much enjoy the large variety of cruize nights that are out there now. A place to cruize to and hang out for free without the goodybags full of wax samples and other crap that I don't need. Just cars, cool cars, and cool car people....

One thing that amuzes me is the attention that my rust rides get compared to the perfectly restored muscle cars and such out there. Many times I've had large crowds admireing my rusty relics while a perfect big block chevelle or something simaler that I parked next to gets ignored. I have to admit that I've gotten enjoyment from the owners of those cars getting really pissed off when no one seems to notice their billet drenched moneypits next to my rustrides.
One time I cruized out to a joliet show with a few buddies, one who drove his gorgeous, mint 55 bel-aire ragtop. We got there and girls started flocking around my magenta 59 chevy taking pictures and such. I wanderd off, but my friends mind was honestly blown because he said people flocked around it all night as if his car were invisible. Mabey people are just looking for the "for sale"-$500 sign that they think might of fallen out of the window. Mabey people are amazed at what can be done with an old car and $10 worth of housepaint. Who knows...All I can say is that I'm very happy with the state of car cruizes today!!!!!

I could give two shits about a trophy. Who cares ??? It is all about hanging with some cool people, being around some old cars. And if a couple beers could be involved, all the better.

i think that they are great. bring a bunch of cars/families together? over priced food? over priced water? YES, and here is a list of why.....

    1. breeds imagination, motivation, and the opportunity to meet new people.

    2. most importantly.... it will (hopefully get children)people involved in restoring and enjoying old cars.

now...to be judged? blow me! i need someones "approval" as much as i need the opinion of my boss on Monday morning!!

i took my 4 yr old to the "monster bash" this morning(in Atlanta), he loved it. 109 degrees out side so we didnt stay long, but he already understands the difference in a "hot rod" and dad's Subaru legacy, thanks to car shows and car races! thank god he does!

    just my opinion!

I go to 4 or 5 flea markets a year now, hoping to score some eBay stuff to make a buck on, and 2-3 car shows. Funny and sad at the same time there were so many to go to 10-20 years ago. To be totally honest there is more info and interesting people right here on the HAMB, so there is no need to spend the drive time & gas to go to events.

I go to bag out everyone elses cars.
But really just to hang out with mates. Being so busy theres a few car sows that if i didn't go i would never see some old friends.

  29. I only attend maybe 3 car shows and a few cruise-ins each summer. Seems as if I always have
something else going on at the same time.

The car has won a few trophies over the years....which are now hanging
out in the garage collecting dust. It's nice to know either some participants or judges thought the
car is good......but that's not why I went.

I enjoy seeing what others have done with their rides - what new cars
have been finished up and are now being driven. Fun to meet and visit
with new people---some have helpful information or knowledge. They
all have a story about their car like where and when they found it, what
they did to it, etc. You can always look at the ones you like and ignore
    the ones you don't.
