Early Ford Wheel Widths?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Greg Stokes, Jun 9, 2009.

  1. Maybe a dumb question but I have a pait of ribbed Firestones and narrow dirt trackers and I want to know what size rim will look the best.
Can some one please tell me the various widths available for early Ford 16" solids?
    Thanks in advance

The majority of 16" Ford wheels you find are 4". Your tires will be just fine on those. There may be some 4 1/2" out there and even those wouldn't be bad. Everybody seems to want 5" but I've not seen any-maybe some Lincolns. And then there is the elusive 3 1/2" '40 wheel (V-8 60?) but don't waste time looking for them.

  3. Thanks! So would it be fair to say that commercial wheels are wider than p***enger car?

The commonest wider ones are the optional ones for '42-47 and '48-52 pickups, two different but interchangeable wheels...I think just 4.5 for slightly larger tires. There are I think 5" ones out there, Lincoln or such. I have the parts books for Lincoln and Merc, and there are a BUNCH of odd wheels that few are aware of, but of course all are rare and the part numbers are entirely useless. Actual wheels are limited to whatever you trip over at the swap meet...
I have a start on a fairly lengthy list. 5.5 pattern wheels are pretty clear, but I'm having some trouble with the wide 5's because there are so many truck models that I know nothing about in the '39-47 period.
