Of all the cars I've built, only about two or three were finished, or maybe I should say "done enough".

Guess I enjoy the build more. Really the only reason I build cars is to teach myself skills, and usually I don't learn much at car shows.

  3. BOTH!!! But with a slant towards building, since I love working my customers cars but have no desire to drive them,I love my coupe,it'll never be finished

I like rescuing something from the crusher or from rusting away, or even just fixing cars that need more work (labor $$$) than they are worth. I hate to see a nice car go to waste. Building is also much more of a mind challenge, figuring out how to do something without lots of special tools or a mega-budget.

I like driving my builds, but mostly on back-road trips lasting a week or more, more of an adventure than just driving. I hate driving to any kind of schedule. Might as well fly...

I think building. Though I really like the driving part of it. I have the most fun I think in tracking them down(the chase)

Definitely love the build, thats why my truck still isnt finished but yet im collecting parts for a full on hotrod build. Ive got Vehicular ADD or sumthin because I dont stay interested in one for more than about a year after its running. But Im gonna love driving my truck again, every time I sit in it I feel like a kid again, Ive towed it across town a couple times and it was AWESOME to just be behind the wheel again.

I only like driving the car, and I can't afford to pay someone to build it. So I end up having to build it or fix it just so I can drive it. In fact the ONLY reason I work on cars, is to get to the point to where I can drive it. I like to do the little stuff, like wheels and tires, shifter knobs ect.... If its running and driving I dont stop driving to work on it until it breaks.

But I do like the hunt for parts too.

I enjoy building more than driving, but I do not like the cleaning maintenance. Washing, waxing, vacuuming, I hate that.

I enjoy building the most, and maintenance the least.
However I ONLY drive old cars.
My newest car is a 1966 and I rarely drive it because I prefer my 31 Ford, 35 Ford, 39 Ford,
The 57 Chevy and 59 Ford are rarely driven---too modern for me.

  13. I like the build, when I'm done I drive them for a while and put them away, time to build something else. There are cars in my barn I haven't started in years,,,,I think it's a sickness.

  14. It is a sickness....an obsession...and an addiction. first of all,we cant help ourselves from going out looking at old cars, second,we see things that arn't there, like for instanse we'll see what that rusted old hulk could be,not what it is,then we feel a responsiblity or duty to save this wore out POS.Then cant think of anything else,The hardest period is the time in between paying for it and getting it to the shop, when your thinking some will steal it or a tree will fall on it or etc...The thing has been sitting in that same spot for thirty years, man get real, thats what your wife'll say(I don't tell her any more)All this'll happen three or four times a year while the last one is still not quite finished,I didn't realize I had a problem till resently when I became obsessed about a 70 Javelin I wanted but had no more room for, so I started to sell off my other projects(I got five un started ones right now) it was very hard to let it go but the money would have finished my coupe ,I named " Metal Illness" ,fitting name I thought....

I enjoy restoring and building certain cars and engines but I hate driving them on the street except on early Sunday mornings. I live in a suburb of the third worst city for traffic conjestion in the U.S....the Dallas Texas area. Since I am now 67 years old, I had to quit building engines and restoring cars in the last five years because of osteoartheritis from several early sports injuries and my job for 35 years as telecom field engineer. Today, I would not survive walking through a swap meet again and I can barely lift a cylinder head. I have a college student that comes by and helps me perform any work that I cannot do. Unfortunately, some day everyone must retire from the sport (or hobby.)

I try not to say "I had one of those" when I attend a car show because I know how tiresome that gets to car owners.

  20. if the day ever comes when I cant do it any more, I dont know what I'll do. All kidding aside Its the only thing I've ever loved doing ,its provided everything for me its who I am 35 yrs and i still cant wait to get started every morning before I know it its time to go home.I guess I should start planning for it.I'vegot a great woodshop and love making stuff from old recycled wood but havent made anything in a year.something to think about I guess or get a lawn chair and show some cars.hell the wife will probably kill me when she finds out about my new car anyway

I like welding, but grinding sucks. I like Painting, but body work sucks. I like horsepower but fixing a broken motor sucks. I guess I like driving more depending on what kind of wrenching I'm doing. Either way it all has to be done so I do it!

There have always been a core group of guys in rodding who are builders, not drivers. They either never finish a car enough so that they WILL drive it in public or sell the car the moment it has finished a 10 minute shake-down cruise and start another. OR they have buildings and sheds full of ongoing projects which rotate in and out of the work area so none has much chance of ever being finished or driven.
It is not a sin to be a builder only, it is not a crime to be a builder only, it isn't even sad to be a builder only. It is sad to not be able to admit what your love is, building only, and instead make all manner of excuses why a car hasn't been driven or run or finished or is constantly apart.
DO what you wish but face what you are and enjoy it.

I prefer the building. I look forward to the idea of driving, but the traffic is shit here, it is not enjoyable. I would enjoy attending an event with similar cars but there is not much of it around here and the do-wop poodle skirt cruise crowd just bores me.

The build is the best part. I'd say: 80% build, 20% driving.

I would much rather be in the garage building rather than driving the car.
