weirdest part I've ever seen - what is this?!?

see this pics, what is this? it's red copper, one bolt with a slot in the middle, two nuts with some sort of H-shape wedged in. it says on the top of the bolt "Reliable SOL 4". it's about 1-1/2" long

 

It looks like an electrical cable clamp to me. Usually used for larger cable/wire sizes. Mike

its called a split bolt. Its used to clamp wire together.

 

it's called a split bolt kearney. it's used for connecting multiple wires together.

 

It's a split bolt bolt. I use them all the time at work. The SOL 4 means it's for solid #4 wire.

 

thanks y'all, I'd never seen one. so what would I use this for in a car? something like split a battery cable to get a second hot wire? any way to guess a year on this one? looks like it wasn't made in China

 

I wouldn't use it for anything on a car. These are used for regular electrical work.
It does look a little old, maybe 50's or 60's, but still only worth copper weight.
These are every day items in the electrical industry.

You would use it to ghetto connect some stuff together. It would require some black tape (I'm sure you could use duct tape in a pinch).

Not a car part at all.....

 

House electrical stuff is much more primitive than car wiring because it isn't subjected to vibration and movement, except maybe in California. Using this in a car would be very dodgy.

Those are also handy for clamping wire rope/cable , like for a remote hood or trunk release, or a manual back up for when your electric door poppers fail.
