I know it's been done, but I did the search and couldn't find the thread where I had seen it.Someone had posted the proper mix to get that satin black look using PPG paint, and even gave the PPG paint codes to use and mix ratios.I had it all written down, but just my luck, the list is missing.
I just used factory packed RM SC-804 Matt Black single stage (they call it UNO). No diddlin' around with flattener and crap like that. It goes on nice, is catalysed so it's a harder than hell top coat finish. As far as PPG....I couldn't say.
Single stage Omni Mercedes black with about 25% flattener in it... But you can do better than flat black... shit is played out...
Hey zman,I'm not going flat,I'm going with a suede,or "satin",as I want that nice sheen like when you coat a flat black with wd40.But it's not just going to be satin black,I'm going to have some color to break it up too.

They actually sell a pre flattened black in their industrial coatings. One of my Distributors has a card taht shows the degrees of flatness. Good Luck
PPG has a clear called flexed and flat. It is not flat but has the satin look that you are wanting. I have got it on my car and looked good and has held up great. If you use a flattening agent your clear will start looking milky after a couple of years.
rm uno is real good stuff. the ppg flexed and flat has flatening agent in it as well. works good, but its been outlawed out here. both pcl, and sem make a semi-flat black with hardener that holds up well, and looks great . sprays easy too. the base coat-flat clear coat works but seems to cost more , and is much more of a pain to lay down skull
I think you are referring to the "32 Ford Spy Pics" post. We painted Kramers 1932 ford pickup and I listed the PPG products we used. I can get the mix ratios in the morning if you need them PM me. The link is here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268310&highlight=32+spy+pics&page=3
this is a prety universal site, covers different bases, types, ect. if ya cant find it there ppg's web address is at the very bottom of the page.,, george http://www.romeolima.com/RV3works/Paint/P-162_DX685_Flattening_Agent.pdf
PPG's 2060 Flexed and Flat is supposed to be mixed with another clear for the desired effect. It is a clear, not a flattening agent. The problem with it is you can end up with a streak effect if it is not mixed really well An easier solution is SU4983. It is a universal flattening agent that will go in any PPG clear and works really well. Ask the jobber store for the tech sheet with it and it will give you all the mixing ratios for all PPG clears and the desired effect you want. DX685 is really meant for basecoat and isn't really the way to go either. Once upon a time it worked. Old school by todays standards. I have seen clears fail using this method.
Any flat clear will streak if its not applied correctly. I know certain people who use 2060 alone to get the effect they're after and some who mix it with 2021. I have used DX685 in DC4000 multiple times and have not had issues. If its meant for basecoat , I guess PPG must have goofed by listing the mix ratios for all their clears in the tech sheet.
Nope, but that post helps also. The post I am referring to gave exact PPG paint code and mixing ratios.I remember the Flec n Flat being mentioned in the post. But if you could send me the PPG paint codes and mix ratios, that would be awesome.
PPG has a formula for flat black. It's commonly used on bus and helicopter hoods. Just ask at your paint store for the bus hood formula. I did my fathers rpu in it over 5 years ago. The powdercoated frame has chalked a little but the truck itself looks as good as the day it was sprayed. Clark
Clark, I think he is looking for satin, not flat, or is that what you meant. I had thought about doing my 57 in a satin black followed by a flame job so it looked like might have been an older laquer job just faded to a satin finish vs flat.
Kramer's 32 pickup was sprayed like this, it is has less shine the typical DP look, you can see it in the grill shell where the sun is hitting it. 3 parts 894 clear 1 part hardener 2 parts thinner 4 parts 759 flattening agent
for us in the rule 1151 district of the aqmd, it doesn't meet the new voc standards. other areas it may still be cool , but many districts are adopting stricter standards by the end of the year. paint stores in your area can tell ya if its legal, and when it will change. seems like just as you get used to a product , they go and tighten the standards and out law it skull
if u want black, skip the flexed and flat. pick up some sem hot rod black. or if u want a clear, house of kolor fa01 with uc35 clear is a good choice. im more into flat single stages then bc/cc. cheaper and quicker prep time.
