I'm like Mazooma1, my first adventure to the LAR show also was at the Hollywood Bowl parking lot in 1961, where they had a '29 hiboy on a flatbed truck to be given away at the end of the day, all you had to do was buy a "winning" ticket for .25 cents each. I think I came up with a dollars worth, back then married with 3 young kids, every dollar counted (remember?) as the show came to an end that day, my sweaty hands must have been running over those 4 tickets continuously like stroking a pat hand in poker!!
I can't remember just who did win that neat '29 hiboy, but after seeing all those roadsters fire up & drive off for home, made a lifetime impression upon my younger brain.
All I could talk about going home that afternoon, was roadsters of course!!
The following year in 1962, I bought my pride & joy for 500.00 all in pieces, no motor, trans, or differential, & unloaded the trailer at home in Torrance,Ca., under my wife's comments " You paid 500 bucks for this"?
Most of you guys can relate to the family thing, you would love to start thrashing on your new project, right?----But, you can't put the kids on hold,---So, between Girl Scouts, Brownies, & Little League, I did manage to get a small amount of work done weekly & after 6 years, I finished my project & all of us went for our first ride!! 3 in front & 2 in the rumble seat!!
Moving from Torrance to Westlake Village in 1968 out in the country(?) gave us a good chance to enjoy short Sunday rides.
An LAR member spotted me at a local store in 1970 & told me the club had moved the LAR show to Great Western Exhibition center in Commerce,Ca.
& invited me to show my roadster that Fathers Day. After the show, LAR members invited me to apply for LAR membership, which I did, & after 6 mos. of weekly meetings & cruises, I was accepted as a full member & was very proud in 1971.
I'm sure most of you do not have any idea of what it takes to put on an event such as this from year to year,---Remember, this was a 1 day show at Great Western until we moved to Pomona in 1980.
So, we would meet on Sat.AM before Fathers Day, to set up exhibitor spaces, chalk out swap spaces, set up ticket booths, make signs, go home & return at 4AM to admit swappers at 5AM, & roadster exhibitors at 6AM, open gates at 8AM, (2.00 admittance then), work all day, hand out mugs at 4PM, wave goodbye, pickup all club gear & store it. Go home bleary eyed, get up & go to work next day Monday!!!!
As mentioned, we moved to larger facilities at Pomona (L.A. County Fairgrounds) in 1980, still a 1 day show & swap, then vendors & others were pushing for a 2 day show to get the best bang for their buck.
That seemed to be the right choice, as it still stands today.

To those of you that talk about the "Old Guys"----You are right, but when we were "Younger" we didn't count on this event going on for so long!!
Thats why so many golf carts are used each year to get around fast as possible,----Can't run no more!!---HA!

As a past LAR President, V. Pres. & Secretary I can ***ure all of you that the same standards apply at each LAR Fathers Day show when entering your open car for public viewing, no primer spots, shiny paint, finished upholstery, good appearance, to recieve an engraved English Pewter Mug on Sunday at shows end, to thank you for making the LAR show a success.
After moving here to Bend, Or. in 1984, the LAR club has made me an Honorary member, & I still drive my 32 roadster down to help out every 3-4 years, wherever I can. At 76, starting to slow down a bit!!

I hope this info can set some people straight,---Keeps the rumors down!!

A couple of years ago i was able to wrangle my way in with my Suede 28 on Duece rails. During the whole day more pictures were taken of my car than of those around me. This is taking nothing away from those with Shinny paint and lots of chrome. Nor is it taking away from the Grand tradition of the Roadster Show. It just showed to me and a few others that the main stream is swinging towards what started it all.
Let me say also I built my car for me in my garage with just a little help from others as it was done long long ago.

When you see Gribbles car in the parking lot of said show, walk over and introduce yourself. You can ask him yourself about the tires

 

Ahhhh, pretty cool! I'll be there in my 22 roadster. Yup, its old black boring paint... but it does have a nice new leather interior thanks to Mr. Dave Martinez.

Just got off the phone with Robert Genat, he said... "you know your not going to get in if it ain't painted". I don't care... just wanna drive too it! Maybe we will get in, pretty neat. Thanks Axle. Mel

I started going in the 80's. Wouldn't miss it! I've always parked in the preferred parking with my supplies.

No need to get your ******* in a bunch 6inarow, I was just stating the obvious.

 

Take the time and meet the Lake Area guys, your life will be better for it. Good group of folk.

 

It ain't that its not traditional.... handing out trophies has been around as long as car shows.. its my prerogative to just not go to those types of shows. for me.. its all about seeing cars and people who are proud of their work.. and who measure that in handshakes and pats on the back.. not by collecting shiny plastic and die cast representations.

Everyone thinks different though.. some people like to win divisions and cl***es and the compe***ion.

"World of Wheels" also had a similar rule back in the 90's.. good guys too in the early 2000's they changed it .. and attendance increased considerably. They adjusted to the times when they saw the $. Also i don't think they had a "cl***" they could put them in to be judged... they just didn't know what to do with the non shiny stuff.

Lots of traditional hot rod and custom shows sprang up specifically because of the "non suede" rules at different car shows.. who were attended by a predominant "gold chainer" type crowd. They were the guys who bought their cars instead of building them. Regardless of how much money they saved up or made.
I am not trying to define that shiny or non shiny cars are or are not traditional.

Heck thats the whole driving force for the criteria'd traditional shows that exclude things like billet and digital gauges etc etc.. like Rust Revival, S**** Drive, Billet proof, Hunnert Car Pileup etc etc ..they are a direct result of getting rejected because of the "non suede" rules. They do the rejecting in the other direction now.

Anyway.. this is diverting attention from the main topic of this post. Which is that the LA Roadster show is expanding to include more types of traditional hot rods ....and that is good.

Just my 2 cents.

And if i am in the LA area when the LA roadster show is going on.. i will definitely attend.

My cars are my trophys. But, the good thing about car shows with trophys, is that most people stick around long enough for me to socialize, and see all the cars. The shows without trophys has people leaving as early as 10AM as if they were being chased

 

I guess some still think this is a trophy event. Like you said- the cars are the trophys here. No awards. No best of...... No 50/50 drawing- just cars & people.

Some people are just mean't to stay in the garage & complain about a show they have no plans on attending.

For me- I have been going for more than 20 years- as a spectator for years, then with several non-roadstrers when they started the Specialty parking area. Only lately- I have a car I can drive inside (finally!). Many who have never been will never understand what's the big deal.
It is a big deal.

 

Although I live in South Carolina, I go to the LA Roadster event every two or three years. At first few times, I took the airline but the last 3 or 4 times ... I drove.



It is the B E S T event I have ever been to.

The swap meet is GREAT, the other area for " Non pre 36 Roadsters " has a lot of cool stuff in it and then ... almost a THOUSAND ROADSTERS

But one of the BEST things
... is the LA Roadster members.

For a example, I was walking in on Sunday morning, a red shirt, white pants guy in a golf cart saw me ... went out of his way ... came by and gave me a ride to my 32 ( sitting inside ).

This guy did not know me, I am not known in that area ... but he just saw that I had a long walk ... and gave me a lift.

Sat and talked with Jack Stewart at the Sheraton for almost a hour. Cool guy ... and very friendly and easy to talk to.

I would love tobe a MEMBER of the LA Roadsters ...

Yes, indeed.
We sure do need a rigid written set of rules on how to be correct non-conformists.
If you don't meet those "traditional" rules to the letter, you can never truly belong to our non-conformist ranks.

Of course, that way they can charge $30 admission instead of just $10 for the regular parking. Its good that they at least recognize theres a lot of regular guys still building stuff in their garage though...

 

Money-Money-Money, you have missed the whole conception of this great event, & never know how much is contributed to the local charities, even a part of your admission!!!!!!

Tom, now that's funny! As you know the Dictator has the final say on everything and of course this "show" is by invitation only! Even us roadster guys out in the backwoods of the Dakotas can be snobs!

WOW if 30 ****ing bucks is too much for one of the greatest hotrod shows on the planet then you need to find another hobby!!!! **** I have paid 30 bucks for a **** show with 60 cars! This is well worth the dough!!!

 

Now after I've taken the time to read the whole thread, there are few things that stand out.

This is the best "thing" I've ever been to, nothing else even compares!

It isn't a judged show, period! The only trophy is the pewter mug given to EVERYONE who drives their roadster through the gate.

I think these rules have existed for over 50 years since 1957, so if that isn't "tradition" I don't know what is!

Thanks to Deuce Daddy Don, and the rest of the "old guys" that we still have this event. Thanks Don, for the tradition that you guys have preserved for us!

Randy (Deuce Roadster), you said it all. What has always impressed me the most about the LA Roadster members is when you drive your roadster through that gate for FREE, they treat you like KINGS for two days. I've never felt that from any other event I've attended from guys I've never met! These guys are pure cl***!

My unwavering support for this show comes from the four "LA Roadster Show" decals that are stuck on the headlight of my home built, radial tired (with no spare!), gold chainer, plastic, shiny, upholstered Deuce roadster that I have driven every mile to and from this event from South Dakota on potholed gravel roads, freshly paved blacktop (it ends up in the car!) and every other form of road in blazing sun, dust storms, thunder storms with torrential rain, sleet, snow, endless bugs for over 5000 miles roundtrip...........it just doesn't get any better than that!

If you've never driven though that gate with your roadster, you don't get it!

 

You are talking about a parking spot........30 bones? Better be Chloe Sevigney, Fairuza Balk and Claire Daines in a daisy chain for me to pay that much to park! DOH!

 

It's a high zoot show, run by some very cl***y people This show is one of the very, very few things that I think shouldn't ever change. Never had a bad time there. Usually, I reconnect with several old pals that I have lost contact with. It restores my faith in the car hobby.

 

You can always leave your car at home, and drive the daily! last time I parked at LAX it was 29 bucks a day and that was for a parking spot and I did not get to see one Hotrod or hang with my friends! a Goodguys show is 40 to 50 bucks and not even close to this show. When I walked the swap last year with Dreadman ( Chris) we counted 6 sets of ARDUN heads and a set of Kinmount (sp) breaks and tons of other cool stuff! Try going to a movie its 40 bucks for two people and its only an hour and a half. This seems like a good deal to me, sorry but things are expensive now a days!

 

I'm with Verne on this one, radial tires on hot rods "kill" the look, period, nobody can argue with that.

The LA roadster show, is worth every penny, of admission, everything is there, I mean everything, I've been going for the past 15 years, and I cant wait 'till the next show.
