Folks Of Interest Bob Bogle, founder of the Ventures died today

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hrm2k, Jun 16, 2009.

  1. Play them in garage all the time. My dad being from Northern England grew up listening to local guitar legend Hank Rankin of the Shadows and the Ventures were certainly among his favourites so I grew up listening to them and Buddy Holly among many.

Loved there version of Hawaii Five O and Pipeline too.

They just played up this way a month or so ago at the casino.

    RIP Bob

I was just listening to one of their albums (yes vinyl) two days ago.

I remember seeing them at the Palomino in North Hollywood, what a show!

The drummer, I think his name is Mel, was the drummer who always got the chicks. What a showman.

    RIP Bob

Mel (the original drummer) passed away maybe about 10-15 years ago....when I saw them play last (about 7 or 8 years ago), it was at the middle east, downstairs in Cambridge Mass (city out side of Boston) Mel's son was playing drums and he cooked....He played Caravan as an encore and it rocked. Major bummer...as a young man, I'm seeing all this talent (musicians and car guys) perish. I know its the inevitable, but its a major drag.....Ventures were one of the BEST bands.....for years I wanted to put togther a Ventures tribute band but couldnt find the right guys here....anyway, so sad to see....

I still have a copy of "Play Electric Bass with the Ventures". Gave it to my son when he was learning to play. There was nothing like a Ventures recording coming in late at night from WOWO on my '57 Ford AM, when I was 16. Seemed to make time stand still and the car run faster. God speed Bob Bogle...We will never forget...

I was at that show! The Fathoms opened, it was a hell of a great night. I'm so glad I was able to see them live.

The Ventures influence cannot be underestimated. Rest in peace, Mr. Bogle.

  12. I love the Ventures...growing up in a home where my folks wouldn't let me listen to "secular non-christian music", the ventures were one of the few bands I could get away with...

    RIP bob.

Growing up in Seattle it seemed like you could catch them when ever, it wasn't a big deal. They were always cool, but never got the respect they deserved locally, IMO. It wasn't until years later that I realized that they were another Seattle area band with a huge influence on music, not unlike Hendrix or Cobain.
    RIP Bob!

My pops brought me up listening to the Ventures. I think they made something like 80 albums in their successful career. As a drummer i was shocked when Mel Taylor died about 15 years ago, he was one of my favorites. R.I.P. Mr. Bogle.

I'm surprised this thread has lasted so long. Last February brought us the 50th anniversary of Buddy,Ritchie, Boppers death - the day the music died, and that thread only lasted less than a day before it was closed because it was "Not car related" .

Axle....how in God's name would the mods consider the Ventures NOT car related? I mean look at their album covers!

Now that's cool ... the car from The Ventures in Space album still around after all these years. I have that cover hangin' (along with others) on the wall above my desk. I see that "T" every time I look up.

As for Bob Bogle, it's always a sad day when I hear of the passing of another one of the "heros" of my youth. I still listen to the Ventures regularly. As a matter of fact, Walk don't Run and, especially, Walk Don't Run '64 still revs me up!

Not to knock the music of the younger rodders, but you guys who are not familiar with the greats such as The Ventures, Dick Dale, and others are missing some good stuff that has been an important part of the late 50s / early 60s hot rod scene. :)

  21. got to see them inducted in the Rock Hall of Fame....One of my all time favorite bands. A sad day..RIP

Ventures are one of my faves. Bummer.

I agree with the logic above. You need to listen to this old "shit" to understand what the old days were like and how cool that was.

  25. Ha!
That show completely changed my view toward The Ventures....
Say Jay, have you seen the new line up of The Fathoms?

People that say "never heard of 'em" may not know their name, but The Ventures' music has become a cultural icon, and their music can be heard practically daily in some incarnation. Everyone has heard some of The Ventures. and that's sayin' somethin'

Everyone. Well, not the monks, but we're working on it. Trust us, they'll dig it.

  27. Wow what a loss, as a northwest native we took alot of pride in our ventures and to lose another is indeed a sad loss. RIP Bob.

  29. I remember as a wee tot listneing to my transistor radio when KFWB would have live music from the Aragon Ballroom in Venice beach. I can remember listening to the king- Dick Dale and the Deltones, the Chantays play Pipeline and the Ventures. Many years later, I got to meet the band after a concert and they were great, talked to my daughter who was about 10 at the time. They even signed a Ventures business card for her, she has it framed. Class act, original act, and part of the soundtrack of my life. RIP

IN the 60's so many of us wanted to be and tried to do what they did. Couldn't do it though. Not from lack of trying. Me and three other guys from school played their stuff. Went to school for a while with Nokie Edwards nephew. He was as much a celebrity as they were.

The FNG also must be a young guy because there wasn't anyone of any color or culture in the 60's who didn't know who they were. Nobody...

Mel Taylor was my hero. I wore out albums playing the drums along with him. Honed the chops out so we didn't stink so bad. Remember one gig as a 14 year old at a teen town for Down's Syndrome folk. We played Venture tunes all night. They didn't want us to sing, just play.... Great memory that one.

The saddest part about this is part of you dies when they pass. It isn't that you knew them, or hung out with them, but what they did went into your very soul. It went DEEP. Whether teenage angst over a girl, or a car you knew you'd never be able to obtain, listening to that music seemed to soothe your very being.

This is why we mourn. When a small part dies it hurts. We remember all of the great things they did for us and our own mortality comes to mind and all of the memories of what we were doing when, with who, while they did what they did, makes it bearable.

RIP Bob Bogle, and Mel Taylor.

And for the FNG who never heard of them, WTF you been livin in a fuckin cave?!!
The rest of us know and that's good enough.

    I love the HAMB
