I've heard from a few people around here in the Bay Area that they are considering the possibility of building a Dragstrip on the old Air Base in Alameda. That would be the coolest thing to happen in the Bay Area in a REAL long time.
Born and raised in Fremont,Ca I still have to bear witness to the empty field that once was Fremont Drag Strip that was closed in November of 1988.
I highly doubt they will ever build another track in the Bay Area ever again, just like in the 90's when they tried to reopen Half Moon Bay, the Greeny Nerds ended that possibility real quick. :(

Man, I hope you're right about this. That would be a great location and a good use for that place!

This has been talked about since the Alameda Air Base closed in 1997.
First it was going to be developed, then the developer backed out.
The Alameda Point area, as it is called now is and has been since 2004, slated for building 1700 homes as a planned community. I know one of the people at SunCal Companies, and you can believe that the San Francisco City Fathers have no intention of turning this into a drag strip.
It is wishful thinking and would be great, but doubt it will ever happen, and certainly not in todays economic climate.

    IMHO

no way. the noise would resonate all over the bay, there are homes right there just a block away.

closed Fremont in 88 and they still haven't built anything there. prolly a toxic waste site

Yeah, that's sorta what I figured as well. What else is new! Can't wait to move from the Bay Area someday, especially away from Fremont.I become more disgusted everyday I drive around this place.

I've posted this pic before,My brother took this around '89 or '90 when he was on patrol(Fremont PD,yes he's a "car guy" so you're safe:D).
The Developer cut across the track to stop "Midnight Runs".

I think they should do like 0 - 100 MPH and back to 0 races there where they had the swap meet. start at the fence and head straight for the bay.

have some scuba guys at the end for those with substandard brakes

  17. I wonder what a top fuler would look like after being hit with a 30mph wind gust while at 300mph? Alameda, nice place for planes...probably not so hot for drag racing. But it would be really, really cool. And the views out there are awesome. PLus, Hanger One is right there. Drag racing and Vodka!

  19. My thoughts exactly!

But if they did, it would be VERY cool....and VERY local too!

  20. vintage drag racing and vodka, sign me up! I was standing on the flight line the other day, will have to post some pictures so those else where can appreciate how cool it really is.

I posted this in the Dec. '08 "sf bay...new racetrack??--o.t. maybe" thread:

Like 49ratfink & Maxwedgeheminut, I also grew up in Fremont's Centerville district (WHS '79 grad) ... it was a sad day when they shutdown Baylands ... 20+ years later and it's still not fully "developed" ... I wonder if the tax revenues generated by the Pacific Commons Shopping Center have even come close to surpasing the tax revenues that could have been generated from 20+ years of Auto Racing events (NARC, USAC, WoO, NHRA, etc.) ??? ... and earlier this year, the City of Fremont's bid to build the Oakland A's new ballpark (CISCO Field) on the the south end of the old Baylands Raceway site went down in flames.

As for building a new drag strip at NAS Alameda, I too highly doubt it will come to fruition ... NHRA still holds the FRAM Autolite Nats @ Infineon (old Sears Pt.) Raceway in Sonoma ... and I can't beleive a track operator could keep a 2nd Bay Area drag strip profitable without hosting a large national event.

I TOO.... BORN AND RAISED.... and badly miss the strip... JFK cl 93'
live off of automall and gaze out where the track used to be..... while stuck in traffic.... I second the thought of getting out.... but is that giving up....... leaving it to who ever wants to come in and change the things we love.....

    my thoughts.....
If you come by the pad...... you leave with a smoke show...... I love when my long standing hot rod neighbors fire up there cars and do light to lights.... or stop sign to stop sign, and piss off the neighbors who havent been there long enough to know the history of Fremont.

we all signed the pa***ions back in the day to keep the track and I remember bring out in front of.... at the time I believe it was Alphabeta on Stevenson with my pop getting signatures... right by the ol Vic Hubbards.

ahhh man.... the memories ... the smell of the nitro cars..... the sound of the jet cars.......... i have chills up my spine ....

Thanks for stiring the ol memory jar!

on side note..... i have an extreme distaste for the current fremont situation..... I hear Pleasenton is nice..... hahahaha. just in the last few weeks we have had numerous home robberies, 1 stolen truck,
and a stolen catelytic converter..... wtf..... dont jsut steal my parts... take the damn vehicle and burn it....

Fremont was once great... and for those memories i will always be proud!

This is from the "Juggers" May newsletter: "Alameda Point – Don Ashby reported that two sound tests were completed, and everyone is happy so far. Don made 22 p***es in 2 hours, They are hoping to expand to a four thousand foot runway in three years." What I had heard was that is was going to be 1/8 mile with hopes of extending it a 1/4 mile along with motocross and roadrace tracks. I also heard that is probably not going to happen because of it being home to some endangered species of bird.

I believe they had a similar BS complaint when they were trying to open Half Moon Bay back up, some "endangered" field mouse!! WTF? Everyday in the World some species become extinct...Its NATURE..LOL..geez..

Several years ago when Vallejo Speedway closed they started building another dirt track across from Sears Point. It turns there was some endangered field mouse that stopped the project. A while later there was a flood which wiped them out anyway ........

Once upon a time drag races were organized to keep the kids/people who were gonna race anyhow from doing it on the street. Probably not a good idea now...
