The brake cleaner will work best. I worked on gensets out in rural areas. Always had to kill them.

Be carefull!! One got me a few years ago. I did the emergency room thing. They put me on a ekg machine for about 3 hours to check my heart. They didn't want to give me the anti venom, said it could be worse than the bite. No sleep that night and not much the next two. Most painful experiance I have ever had!

5 pages of solutions to kill the bastards and yet not a single pic of a dead spider in the said car... We need pics!! :D

I sometimes hit spiders that made it into my garage with a couple of shots of brake cleaner. They slow down (probably from the cold) and get all mushy afterwards.
If they end up on the concrete floor in the clear I sometimes add fire to the mix to speed up the progress. Like said earlier, blasting fireballs like that sure is fun! :D

We bought our first home here in North Carolina in 1971 and had a garage built hehind the home. It wasn't long before the Black Widows moved in. It started in the garage but moved to the laundry room in our house. We had the builder exterminate the house and we paid for having the garage done. They kept coming back. We had a garden and grew watermelons and cantalopes. We had to be careful because they loved living under them. It was cooler and they had plenty of food. As a rule Black Widows do not build webs. They just live under things cool and moist. Believe it or not I just learned to live with then just like Hornets and Wasps. I did get bit one time when I was picking uo a car cover and one was under it. I thought a Wasp had stung me. It was small and bit my little finger close to the nail and did not cause any more problems than a Wasp sting but it scared the shit out of me. I have a frien who is a carpenter who did work for me and told me he was working in a out building and and saw a large Black Widow. He took his hammer and smashed it and the juice squirted in one of his eyes. Before he could get to his pickup his eye had swollen shut. He drove himself to a nearby hospital and damn near lost his eye.

When we built our next home in '83 I was on a mission to keep them out and so far I have succeeded. About 15 years ago I bought a pair aluminum ramps from a car hauling company. They were laying in a grassy field. I paid for them and drove down in the field to load them in my pickup. When I picked up the first one it was infested with large adult Black Widows. I threw it down and went back to get a refund. They just laughed at me. I figured losing a few bucks was better than deja vue.

Spiders survive cold,by moving to the nearest dark warm damp place.

For one, they do build webs,my garage is an attest to that, and it's also how they catch food.I also doubt the story of the swollen eye, considering when you squash a black widow, the "juice" as you call it,goes outwards, not upwards, and the only way he could get that in his eye is if he was less than an inch away from it,in that case the widow would have felt threatened and probably jumped on him(Yes,they can fucking jump, don't ask how I know).Coming from sunny So. Cal.I am quite acquainted with Black Widows, and let me tell you, they are no fun and spread like wildfire.Your best bet is spraying them with break cleaner, then squashing them. There was a thread on here about how to keep them out, just do a search for Black Widows

Wasps kill spiders so yank down a wasp nest and throw it inside the car, wait for nature to do it's job.

  10. no dead spiders yet, ive been kinda staying away from the affected areas till i go to wrench on it and get it running again on Saturday. The interior got the all clear so i did start poking around in there..... its got a slick 70's cb radio and the interior is getting gutted for my better car

the main areas that are affected are the "bonnet/trunk" and under the hood... ill snap some pics of dead spiders when i get that far

Beer and a hose. Use the sprayer to move'm out, and get your best friend good and snockered. Have him (or her?) put on good rubber galoshes, and stomp every spider they see. Be sure to video tape it, either for America's Funniest Home Videos (a moneymaker), or to show your friends lawyer that no, you were NOT holding a gun totheir head (a moneysaver).

Man, be careful bro. I got bit by a Brown Recluse 5 years ago about three inches from my...well....an area you don't want to be bittin near (if you know what I mean).I would have been scared after being bit by one period...let alone where I was bit. The hospital got me taken care of, but 5 years later I still have a scar. Those things are ruthless. I have killed spiders with Rim cleaner before. You might try that. The acid burns them up, and I can't see that doing any harm to your metal. An easy 5 bucks might do the trick. Thats my 2 cents.

  15. alot of good things to try.... i'll keep a few cans of engine degrease, brake clean, and solvents near me when i try to get the engine running and a jump pack set up when i go to run it

    hooligan63,

I don't know about southern California Black Widows but I sure do about North Carolina ones. You usually find them under something moist with little or no web. As far as my carpenter friend's story about popping one with his hammer I don't know the circumstances but I believe him.

we've had black widow problems here and it take a lot to kill them. Some we spreayed with berryman's just crawled off.....

We finally bought some stuff at tractor supply that was specifically targeted towards black widows, but it said to dilute it.. we didn't and after a while we stopped seeing them around. Did find a few dead ones too.

don't think this was what we got, but the description sounds right..

Ohhhhhh. I just had a flashback to a day many years ago when I was on-call in the Vanderbilt University Emergency Room, and a poor sap was brought in by ambulance with a Brown Recluse Spider envenomation on the tip of his penis. (He had left a pair of work pants on the floor in the corner of his garage, and slipped them on to do some painting.) His penis was so swollen he couldn't pee. I spent 15 minutes trying to get a catheter in him before I gave up and drilled one into his bladder through his suprapubic area. He was admitted to the plastic surgery service and spent a month in the hospital. 4 surgeries later he left the hospital, a remnant of his prior self, if you get the picture.

  25. Tarp the car after pouring a line of borax around it. Leave open pans of good quality clorine bleach or lye solution in and under the car. Leave it for a week, lift the tarp with a wind to your back. I can't guarentee the condition or longevity of upholstered parts after this procedure. If you add amonia to the solution, you will destroy their central nervous systems pronto, but it may do the same to you or anyone unfortunate enough to snoop around.
