In a couple weeks I am going to look at a pair of trucks.

1959 F350 2wd and a 1960 F100 4x4. Both have the 292 engine and manual transmission. I have never owned any trucks this old and have never worked on them either. Are there any common and or not so common problems to watch out for.

    Thanks in advance

Look for the rear cab corners to have rust, like almost any truck of the era. They'll typically get a little rust in the lower door jam/step area but these all are a pretty quick fix.

I've got a big window 59 2wd but have always wanted a 4wd. I've loved my truck since I bought it in 2001. Fun cool old trucks and you don't see a ton of them running around.

    Nice yellow ride.....

I'll get a better look at them when I get home. From the pictures, th look a little rough. It just depends on how much work I want to put into it to make it a reliable 2nd vehicle and around town truck. Thanks for the imput.

  5. watch out for the leakey rear main seals on those 292's as well.. if they are still rockin the resin-soaked rope style seal they are gonna be drippers.. they make better ones now.. and if that 59 is one of the heavy duties like you say it may have the Y block coveted forged steel crank.. that would be a good score..

I have a 60 2wd drive with the 223. The only problems I have had are the window regulators and inside door latches. They broke on the driver door.

For me, I guess I worry a little about winter reliability, it lasts 7-1/2 to 9 months of the year depending on the year. The F350 would be a cool 4x4 conversion project.

  10. You call that rough? -lol

The front cab mounts really disintegrate. I bet both need them replaced- they're about $150 a side from LMC, plus removing the doghouse, welding, etc.

You can run without them- doesn't affect reliability obviously.
Most people would recommend a Pertronix ignition conversion.

I guess "rough" is a relative term. I have for sure driven worse.

Thanks for the heads-up on the mounts and the ignition upgrade. It seems like most all the older trucks suffer the same fate.
