Anyone know the laws regarding restoring a US Mail truck?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by xxwelderxx, Jun 21, 2009.

  1. Just curious as I came across US Mail truck made by Dodge in the 40s and Im wondering if there are laws regarding restoring one.

  2. I doubt it. I wouldn't run exempt plates on it, but I mean it's from the 40's I dont think the state will care. Who owns it now?

  3. Its in private hands now,but sitting in a field.

If your gonna have fun doing it I know there has got to be a law against it. If there isn't one they'll make one.

Once public service vehicles are decommissioned, there are no problems about driving and registering them for everyday use. You see lots of decommissioned police interceptor crown vics and 9C1 caprices in civilian hands, no different for a mail truck

I have a friend with a sand dragger CJ style mail jeep.
It has off road tags so the state knows about it.

My everyday POS is an ex-government car.
    They sell 'em on eBay.

    BUT...
I don't think I'd be wearing a postal uniform while driving it past the Homeland Security Office.

As long as you buy civilian tags for it,I don't think its a problem. I retired from the PO and we auctioned them off when they were worn out so its not illegal to own them.Just like 49ratfink said, stay out of the mailboxes!!

My Dads Friend told me about a ex-mail truck he bought and painted US MALE on the side. He said he worked downtown near the post office. The post master got pissed about it being parked in front of the post office but there wasn't anything he could do about it

  14. Well I meant that I wanted to restore it to its former glory as a USPS truck.

I don't know what it is but ever since I was a little kid I loved mail trucks.

I found these on the web.

  16. I am thinking that you are thinking that by restoring it you mean back to the US Mail colors and logos' Not just putting it back on the road with a different paint job.
If that what you want you should check with the feds they may have a problem, maybe you could hook up with the Postal Service as a promotional vehicle..
I knew of a guy sevearl years ago that had a retired phone co. truck, I think it was a'55 or '56 he painted it like it was when it was in service and eventually the phone co. got wind of it and made him repaint it, also I have seen several vintage police car clones or restores and they alwaye seem to be trailered in. So I would check with someone before you put a bunch of money into it, or just do and have fun till the say don't. If this is not your plan and you just want to use it then it's like everyone else said.

  19. The one I found is a late 40s Dodge with a flathead 6. I think restored and a hopped up flathead 6 would be pretty cool.

I worked about 10 years as a mechanic for Southern Bell up to 1978 in the company garage. When trucks and cars were surplused out and put up for closed bids, we would s****e off the signs and logos and paint over the stripes of company colors before their sale. I noticed the school systems did the same with old school buses.

    Be careful.

My buddy bought an old mail jeep (right hand drive) and he would get pulled over all the time. Once he was almost arrested for driving that postal jeep.

Apperantley there are laws against driving an ex-postal vehicle in city limits while naked and waving a loaded pistol out of the sliding door. Who knew????

There are currently no laws regarding restoring former US
mail trucks. That is only because they haven't thought about it yet. I hope a Congressman doesn't read this and get any ideas! LOL

same thing i was thinking. have at it!

  25. The only problem since they were sold to the public, would be if you were to try to duplicate the current mail truck paint scheme and logos. Those by the way, are registared trade marks of the United States Postal Service and there can be restrictions regarding the use of the schemes for any reason. I think the only way you would ever be h***led about it would be if there was reason to suspect mail fraud.

There was mention of the 'Feds' in a post above.

The United States Postal Service is not part of our Federal government. It is its own en***y.

I have a few USPS items that I obtained from them.. one being an old cast iron collection box. All they required was for me to sign a form stating I wouldn't use items to represent the USPS....
