Do people ask how much you have in your car, and gasp if you tell them the truth?!?

I can't be the only one. People ask me all the time how much my car cost or how much I have in it...and I used to tell them...until I realized the universal reaction was:

    "you paid WHAT?!?" :eek::D

Now I just say I paid too much, unless I know the person doing the asking is a car guy and has an idea what these things cost.

The truth is I don't keep a running tally because I'm sure it would be higher than I want to remember, but I have a guessstimate

What's the reaction you guys get when you tell them what you have in your car, or do you just not answer the question?

Most people think my car cost about 2 grand :rolleyes::D, which is a stinger, but I know most people would never realize how much my buddy has in his beautiful '54 Chevy, either, so I take it with a grain of salt.

For you guys that have cars that look like a million bucks and didn't cost that, well, more power to ya, someday I hope to be able to do more with less, but not yet. :)

I just hate when people ask what I have into it or what it's worth. Kind of rude but what ever. I only talk about the price or what I have into it if it's for sale other wise they are all worth a million bucks....to me.

I just tell them I paid what it costs. Either they are a car guy and know this shit aint cheap, or they aren't and I really don't give a fuck what they think. I have always thought it rude to ask unless it is for sale.

The average person cant tell the difference between a 8k and a 80k car, really from outward apperance it's pretty much the same, but the details are what set them apart. Fit, finish, quality of work, and custom parts all of that most people dont see or understand.

Being involved with a Ridler car made me realize that, before that, i thought it's impossable to spend a million bux on a car, after that i realize to do it right it's easy

I have a friend with a Lobeck roadster. A beautiful car that cost low 6 figures when built. He dropped by the other day and for shock value, I told my neighbor what it cost to build. I had to pick her up off the ground. Some people just don't get it. If they were cheap, everyone would own one.

I had a guy in line behind me in the grocery store ask me what I had in my truck last sunday. He acted kinda pissed when I told him "more then it's worth" and refused to spit out a figure.

It doesn't matter though...he couldn't cut me off, quit cooking for me or get me fired...doesn't bother me a bit if he got pissed.

I know a guy who no matter what you say he knew of one you could have got for less. doesn't matter if it is cars or cake, if you just bought one he has one he would have sold you for less or bought one a while back for half price.

I have run into a few people like you described myself.Usually these people are the ones that dont have anything worth a crap themselves ,but are the 1st ones to run down everybody elses stuff. They are what i like to refer to as "Parade Pissers" ...

I get asked frequently; "what is a car like that worth"? Because it's extremely rare, I think they don't know if it's worth $2500. or $1,000,000. I usually tell them "I don't know", then they tell me "you must be afraid to drive it"!!! I just laugh and drive away!

i do body work for a living and have a lot of friends i work with that build custom trucks so we know what it takes but honestly you cant put a price on something you built yourself all that time with your own hands to make it look just how you want it to is priceless and you will never get that back if sold and people that know nothing about cars will never understand that

    I tell them I don't know.... because I don't

I don't keep track, and don't really care to.
it is what it is, no matter what, so long as it's the parts I want, the look I want, etc...
then why drag the project down with number crunching.
make sure your in the parts store computer, and throw them receipts away!!

    I couldn't tell them.
I have a stack of invoices for parts I have bought for my OT car since I started modifying it 10+ years ago. That stack sits in the corner in a box just for P/N reference etc. I have NEVER totaled it up. I don't want to know.

I don't even know how much the 36 IH in my Avatar cost me, beyond what I paid Ryan for the Auction I won to get it. The cost to drive to TX from CT with my Truck and Trailer by myself to get it is immaterial.

The Joy is in the Journey, not the cost of it.

So far everyone is pretty shocked at how inexpensive mine is. Most people have now idea that they could be driving a classic piece of Americana for about the same or less then their POS Honda. What gets 'em is when I point out that the value of MY car goes up every year, and THEIR "new" car goes down every year.

for me, it's simple. I say "It's an 8 thousand dollar motor in a 1700 dollar car."

that typically proves my point, which is either "Yes, I really am dumb enough to do that" OR "Clearly, It is not finished."

    Heh.

This is a question that has been asked many times in the past fifty years. In the beginning I was a bit flustered by such a personal question. So, a few years ago, I came up with a great response...IMHO.
When asked that question, I ask one in return.
"How much money do you make"?
"What size are your wife's breasts"?
Of course, if the guy asking is bigger or meaner looking than me, I tell him, "$32,528.72. Uh, not counting the fuel I just bought to get here".

I have had most of my cars 10 years and more and got them so cheap its embarrassing to tell.

Usually I tell people it costs me as much per year to keep it running as they pay per month on their car note.

A lot of folks buy a new car every two years.
If its a $25,000 car, just one of my old cars has saved me $100,000

i got the reverse reaction when i put my o/t 66 chevelle up for sale , i took it to the swap meet 2 years ago with an asking price of 15k and had several people say "bet you've got alot more than that in it " . they wouldnt believe me when i said "not really, ive only got about 6-7k in it " i bought it as a pretty clean orig car in 97 for 3500 , interior was great ,just put a carpet kit it , paint and body work by myself , put the engine together myself , put in a good used th350 . now if i was charging by the hour it woulda been a diferent story but out of pocket i more than doubled my money !
