Do people ask how much you have in your car, and gasp if you tell them the truth?!?

Funny, my boss asked me that exact question just yesterday. So I told him. He was quite pleased as he is now going to use me and my 'hobby' to justify his hobby and expense (fly fishing) to his wife !!!

When I got the 55 I started a folder to keep track of the parts I bought and what parts from other cars are in it. Damn thing is over an inch thick now so when I get asked I just tell them a hell of a lot more than I thought and it's still not done

  3. I just tell them well it cost a little over 2 grand new...
Actually I say , less than a Stienway piano, less then a Ming Vase, less then one of those Russian eggs, and less that their golf clubs. It is my outlet for fun so cost is actual cost minus the fun I have with it, come out about even...

some come right out and ask while others work their way up to it like its a big secret or they are trying to out smart ya & get you to spill the price or something.

i just had a guy ask and he worked his way up to it like it was a big deal and it was going to be a secret between us.
i just said oh i paid 9000.00 saw a few pics on ebay called the guy bought it right over the phone. i kept him on the phone & drove right to the bank & wired money right to his account as fast as i could. the owner asked what i was doing? i said buying it whats your acct #? i then had a transport pick it up & deliver it.
i had 9525.00 exactly in it delivered to the driveway.
    his eyes got real big.
i said i dont know if i got fukked or not!?? i did have a friend of mine standing there 10 minutes after i got it delivered & he was forcing 12k on me real hard after we went for a drive in it & it ran & drove good & i didnt even know it ran & drove & everything worked when i bought it. i knew it ran & the guy selling it for his neighbor said he went up & down the driveway in it once.
i said i sold alot of stuff off it for good money & used stuff i had saved that was layin around & pumped some more money into it of course so the new patio furniture will have to wait & the couch & love seat will have to do for a few more years but overall im happy.
the guy stood there looking at it a minute & walked away. hahahahaaaa!!

I think the best answer is" if you need to ask that question you dont need the answer". Somtimes, maybe, once in a hundred years someone asks that in sincerity but most of the time its so they can ,in thier own minds think of you as foolish.

I don't mind telling most times. Maybe because I am a car cheapskate and if I actually bought it and own it I got one hell of a good deal on it!

  11. What I pay for something is no one's business. I don't ask, 99% of the time...but if someone says "Wow, I got a great deal on this!", that opens the door, because that is an implication that they can't wait to tell everybody. If that is the case, then they'll probably say, whether I'm curious or not.

People do actually ask me all the time, how much it's worth, or how much I paid for the interior or body and paint work, etc. More often then I ever thought they would. I politely state I don't discuss things like that.

If they press the issue I tell them to contact the Austin Speed Shop for an estimate for their car or Volunteer Auto Body in Hartsville, TN for a paint quote for their car. That usually closes the subject.

This is pretty good, I get asked often enough. My usual reply is "If I tell you then I'll have to kill you", or "Why, do you want to make me on offer"?
I wouldn't mind telling people actually how much it cost to build, but then again.............if they want to know why don't they go build one themselves!

    IMHO

    For me to sell?

    $350000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.01

I get asked that quite a lot.

    I always answer.."it don't make a difference cause I'll never sell it"
Sometimes then I get.."You must know what it's worth "

    Uh..like my legs and arms..it don't have a price..neither do my kids..somethings are priceless.
I have been asked.."well you must have it insured for a certain amount..what's it insured for"

I really don't think thats any of your concern..unless you're looking to steal it..

    ..and smile at the idiot..

  16. I just tell them it's cheaper tham a gun collection. My cars are my hobby, I do what I can with what I got and don't keep track.

I never tell, but that's because I don't know.. Purposely don't try to keep track... I would have a panic attack if I knew the dollar amount.

I guess it depends on the person asking--and how they ask.
One guy was kind of a "know-it-all" asshole, trying to impress some people with him.Looking at my 37 Ford,he says" how much you throw into you're 40 Ford?" I look at him and say"How's your wife in bed?"The look on his face was priceless!!

Usually its the monthly car payment makers that ask these silly damn questions. I give 'em a guesstimated answer and remind them their 2 or 3 year old car that they are still making payments on is always going down in value while my old car's value is always going up!

Mine is still a work in progress and I'd rather not know how much it costs or will end up costing. I do have a good story though. I was with a friend of mine at a show, he's got an O/T 66 Impala and as soon as we got out of the car, some joker and a girl, he was obviously trying to impress, walk up.

Him- "That's a nice car you got there, but you probably could'a gotten a nice Mustang with the money"
    My buddy-"Oh really?"
Him-"Yeah, like a 5.0 or a GT. So how much you got in it?"
I dumped my pockets on to the seat and said
    "A $1.73 and a couple 'a Condoms!"

He walked away really mad, the girl smiled at us though.

Haha, yeah that's what I do too. Usually it goes like this:
Rude dude: So what did it cost ya?
Me: How many times a week does your wife put out?
Rude dude gives me a puzzled dirtly look.
Me: OH! Sorry, I thought this was inappropriate question day! :D

  25. Yeah... what do they pay? $300-600 per month plus insurance and accessories on a car that they wont keep that they'll trade in for next to nuthin in a few years when they need a new one.
I usually shock people when I tell em what i've got into my cars including purchase price, but then again I like to buy and build em' cheap. some cars I've bought and finished building for around $ 500 and driven for years without sinking another dime into. this always gets the goat of people who sink $400-800 a month into their transportation just because they cant turn a wrench.

  26. The reply that gets my goat most often these days are the ignorant youngins and such that see my cars and say, "youv'e got to put some 22" 's on that bitch" As if the car is not respectable by itself. I always wonder if these people got shortchanged in the penile dept, since thats what they base their self worth on.

I get this ALL THE TIME showing the cars we do. I was asked that question Sunday and the car's for sale but I knew he wasn't a buyer. I shot him the price and said "...so, do we write it up? Deposit?" I didn't do it to be mean, just bein a dick I guess. I've told this story before. I'm showing a rare Packard. This farmer lookin dude comes up and here's the conversation:

"Say buddy, jes tween you n me what's this car worth?

'I don't discuss that sir but you're welcome to ask the owner.'

    "It ain't yers?"

'No sir, I restored the car for a friend of mine. Go ahead and look at it, enjoy it'

"So you restored this car? Wow. How long did it take?"

'There's around 3500 hours in the car. Everything was touched or restored.'

"3500 HOURS!?! I dare say, wouldn't that pay for a few college educations?"

    'Fuckin eh...it paid for mine.'

He walked off in a huff which was the desired response. Rude judgemental fuckers with a seasoning of hypocracy. What are they doing at shows if they don't get it?

Why does Joe Public have this obsession with putting a monetary value on shit?I spend what I have to,to get it how I want it, which don't matter anyways,'cause selling it was never gonna be an option. It's not even an investment,it's my dream. If all those grey little people out there, with no passion, content to be spectators all their lives(face it there's plenty of 'em,and I'm not just talkin cars here)knew what I was ploughin' into the Kripple Kart, they'd think I was a jerk, and they'd probably have a point. But that's my bizniz.

Its the question i hate the most togheter w/ "Arent the cops giving you a hard time for......" add what you like best..you know, it could be the steering wheel, the tyres, the shifter extension and even a camo net over the bed of my pick up truck.....was once questioned as "legal" by mr. know-it-all.
As many others already said, these guys are so rude and probably dont know why theyre askin such a private thing themselves, they just do, as the only way they know to judge something or to have an opinion about it is to know what its worth in cash, being the only thing that they value in life...and this is sooo sooo sad.. ...
    peace, Nick.
