I built a GMC 302 inline 6 in the cellar of my 1860's farm house.Built the engine on a stand, lowered it onto a pallet using a Cum a Long hooked to ceiling joists.Used short lengths of pipe to roll the pallet over to the rubble stone cellar walk out.Run my Jeep to the walk out outside doors and used dragged the pallet up the steep steps on planks. Then dragged the pallet 300 foot to the barn during a snow storm. Then used the cum a Long again to winch the pallet into the barn where my 37 Chevy Pu was waiting.

Back in 1969, I built a 4 cyl motor for my 62 Lemans in the computer room at work while the computer chunked away data :)

PS 3 guys down the hall were accurizing Colt 1911A1's in the Chem lab, a couple more were making walnut pistol grips in the machine shop and no one got upset.

We had quite a 'hobby center'. And all of our work got done too!!!:D

Without access for an engine hoist or a really good dolley or 5 gorilla-like friends, you can save a lot of trouble by leaving assembly of a few heavy bits til engine is out by the car. With flatheads and SBC's, leaving off heads and flywheel and a few minor externals leaves you with a short block that two determined people can get anywhere--one person even if crazy enough and in possession of a good hand truck. Your mileage may vary if dealing with a hemi or a 394 Olds...

Started as a kid rebuilding a go kart in my room one winter. From there is was a Kawasaki dirt bike and finished it all off building a 350 Chevy before my Mom finally said enough and let me set up a wood burner in the garage.

A few years ago A local guy was rebuilding a motor in his living room and everything was going good untill he painted the engine block, the fumes from the paint were ignited when the furnace turned on and burned down the house

Built this Trumpet in my 'den' a few years ago. Back in the 70s when I was racing VWs I built the motors in a 2nd story efficiency apt.

My wife got pissed when she kicked the 400 turbo for my 65 caddy that was in the living room... lol. I didn't make her run into it. :) She made me move it outside. Thank goodness she didnt trip on the Shovelhead parts in the spare bedroom! Sucks not having a garage...

A friend of the family was storing all the parts to his 28 A Roadster in his spare room until it was all ready to be put together. At some point he decided to put together the small parts that he could get back out the door.
About a year latter we helped him cut the wall and window out to get the finished car out of the house.

When I was 17 I built a 327 in my parents basement of there old farm house, when I got it done Dad and I nailed plywood on the stairs and pulled it up out of the basement with a 64 Chev. station wagon. Then we set it on the tailgate took it out to the crib shed and dropped in it a 65 Impala drop top.

  17. No, but I' once used a my apartment's bathtub/shower for a paint booth. The bathroom's exhaust fan eliminated most of the evidence. :D

1968, Northwestern Oklahoma College, Coronado Hall. Rebuilt and painted a Matchles 500 single in my dorm room. The night I finished it up the phone rang about 9 p.m.. "This is Dean Chilldress, Dean of Men, Are you the guy with the motorcycle in his room?" "Yes sir". "GET IT OUT!!!!"

Figured I didn't have anything to hide at that point so we took it out through the lobby instead of sneaking it down the back stairs.

Im building my blown 383 stroker in the living room. I wont go as far as putting the heads on until it gets outside though.

My buddies rebuilt a 350 in there dorm room last year!! they didnt have the balls to fire it up though. they just rolled it through the halls and rode down the elevator when they were done.

Most times a lady ain't involved. Was looking for model A stuff in the 60s and went to Bruston Mills WVa. and he had them. Also had a old Chandler in the living room, and most of the other rooms had STUFF, NOS Stuff. No woman, but lots of Ford parts, still in original boxes or paper wrapers. He must of had 100 Fords in his YARD. Drove a 31 all original A coupe as his daily. Saw him years later at a couple of meets. Ice man
