  2. Beautiful old planes. The Bombers are amazingly graceful
So many of those guys where hot rodders or came back to be hot rodders after the war. I think that was one of the seeds of hot rodding.

I flew in the Collings Foundation B-17 the 909'er in 2006. A total life-changing thrill. Incredible machines!

  7. That must have been awesome. I've been up in a B-25 and few other warbirds but the B-17 has to be the top of the top.

The top was open at the radioman station...you could stick your head out in the slipstream!

    You mean like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00_bDnJUffM
This was the first B-17 I flew on, the Liberty Bell back in 2007.

Flew in the Nine-O-Nine last year. Took my father in-law for his 80th birthday, he didn't quit grinning for a week afterwards. I feel safer in those old B-17's than when I fly in the newer commercial jets.

    Nice to see a P-51 that's not a D-model.

I love warbirds. You'll see that a lot of people on the Hamb do too. Django here on the board even painted the nose art on this B-24. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182628

Too cool, what an honor. I will be going up in a B-17 this year.

It was really funny because a buddy that went with me and my wife thinks no one knows he wears a toupee and we kept trying to get him to stick his head out the hatch. You should have heard all the excuses. It is amazing how big the rudder is when you see it from the hatch on those things.

When I walked through the bomb bay the plane pitched andI whacked my head on a bulkhead rib. Just a trickle of blood, but my already heightened adrenaline pegged. I still crawled into the nose, hiding the blood from the crewmen under my hat. the view of the engines was phenomenal...and the coast of (I think) Manchester, MA opened up in front of me in the nose. I looked through the Norden bombsight at the ocean rushing by. I almost puked when I got off I was so excited!

Dad was a Chief Armorer at Great Ashfield 1943-45 with the 385BG, always looking for photos of B-17's we worked on.

  16. P-51's are cool but I really love Corsairs.

I have been lucky to see a few different ones too . The used to have a bid air show in McSherrystown , Pa . There were a few WW1 Birds there too and could get some rides on them too . There are 2- WW1 by-planes that fly out of the Thomasville Airport or as we all know it as the US30 Raceway in Thomasville Pa. One is a Beautiful "NAVY" low wing plane that flies out of there also . It's always nice and a honor to see what our Great Grandfathers flew in the WW1 & WWII .

Several members of the OFC have flown, like was said above, life changing experience.:)

  19. I second that.First thing I noticed was the flush cockpit. Is that the bird the Warbirds outfit in Kissimmee has?A friend of mine flew that one about 10 years ago as a 60th birthday present from his wife.A grand an hour even then.

I live across the street from Meyers Airport in Tecumseh(where Meyers aircraft were originally built)and every Memorial Day they have a flock of T-6's(ten this year)refuel there before their other flyovers.Every five years they have a Meyers only reunion and the last one netted about 35 aircraft including 11 biplanes.Considering only about 105 total aircraft were built that is a pretty good turnout.

Here's a couple pics from years gone by:

  20. Just think all those birds were designed and built wiht out a computer. All WWII birds are a sight to see.

Hi Steve, SIU John DLM here. I frequently lurk on this site but never post anything...until now. I dig your wedding photos, and will use the one of your ride and the plane as my wallpaper.

  26. Thank you. It was 40's style. I had on a reproduction WWII Class A uniform and we got married in the air over Folsom Lake.

  28. The Collings Foundation. A great group of people! They tour every summer with the bombers.. $425 a flight but well worth the money if you have it. We paid for 10 seats for our wedding party. This is something that is a once in a lifetime thing if you are into that era at all.
