Eyes on Design Show Pics (Dialup Warning)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Zenor, Jun 27, 2009.

  1. Some pictures from the Eyes on Design show last Sunday at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford estate near Detroit...

This is still in the spectator parking lot.

Not a clone, the real Barris

Jake's kick*** Chevy... believe or not, bumpers are painted chrome.

Todd Haas' 34, familiar sight at Bonneville

Drew (abomber30) and I brought my heap

The rod and custom riffraff were kept a safe distance from the country club swells :D

Fellow HAMBer The Highlander brought this 1932 REO Royale that he restored for a customer. To me, this was the clear star of the show. Unbelievably gorgeous lines, and said to be one of the first ever wind tunnel-tested.

Very nice. The REO looks stunning. Awesome car.

  7. Here are a few more...

    Hudson Italia Superleggera

They were giving an award to Willie Davidson, so there were plenty of cool H-Ds

This is a 1932 Dreyer big dirt track racer. It ran a B motor and had a very cool one-off OHV head. With that engine-turned firewall it felt like a American version of a Bugatti.

Both Marmons were racers in Uruguay back in the '20s / '30, love this paint

There was a big array of station wagons, a special emphasis category at the show

Neat blown flatty '40 Ford from the HR & C section

And a very nicely done Chebby

Your ears much have been burning last night. We (Me, the Highlander, and Safari Wagon) were just talking about you and the Eyes on Design event and wondering if you were going to post an adventure thread. So glad you did, the shots are awesome. Thanks!

"Not a clone, the real Barris"

I think that this is indeed a beautifully done clone owned by FASI here on the Hamb.
The original is painted in the original paint scheme and this is the second paint scheme.

    Thanks.

Isn't that green roadster "Rudy's" old roadster? Also, do you have any pix of the "purple panel in the background?

You are 100% correct, that car is Keith's and is a clone of the second version of Larry Ernst's Chevy. Burns Berryman owns the original and had it restored. I have heard that it is now deteriorating in a garage. I hope that story is not true.

    Awesome.

As for the Hudson Italia, I know that they were hand formed aluminum. Were they actually called Superleggara's?

Additional pics of one from last years Keels and Wheels in Houston. (Same one?)

Saw FASI's car at Barz51's show last Sat. The thing is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. He was telling me the car has been done for 10yrs and it looks like it was just finished last week. It was great talking to Keith at length about the car. My wife was talking to his daughter and she mentioned the fact that she is actually afraid to touch the car because its so nice. Cool car owned by a Cool guy.

Bob I also hope you're wrong about the original rotting in storage. I haven't seen pics of this car I don't like. It would be a crime to let something this signifigant go to waste. Guess that's why I haven't been blessed with millions 'cause I'd try and save'em all.

Beautiful shots. The Hudson is insane.

  22. Denise -- Thanks! Sorry we missed you there, it was a fun show.

Thanks Bob & all for the correction on FASI's car, and shame on me for not recognizing Rudy's roadster.

Chris - the purple panel is Terry Cook's "Deco Liner", based on a Zephyr. Has a matching chopper that fits in the back. Here are some more pics

As for the Hudson Italia, I'm not sure whether "Superleggera" ("Superlight") is part of the official name but it was badged that way. Here are some more shots, along with some of another Italia I spotted in 2006:

Wait just a minute there, Mr. Zenor!
That blue 32 coupe has another name doesn't it?

Edit: Never mind, I must be mistook. Or senile.

  28. A Terry Cook,"creation".

  29. Superleggera is just the build construction principle of the car - "super light" as quoted earlier. The Italia was Hudson's sports car model ***led as a '54 and '55 model. I owned one years ago. They are powered by the Hudson Jet 202" flathead 6cyl with Twin H-Power and in fact are built on a Hudson Jet unibody subframe. The cars were built in Milan, Italy by Carrozzeria Touring, hence the badges on either side of the hood. While the body is hand hammered aluminum, there is also a significant glaze of a special aluminum-adhering filler to finish the body as they are not metal finished like a fine high dollar European sports car. 25 of these cars were built and one prototype 4door on a full size Hudson ch***is which was also recently restored. The car's styling is very unique from front to rear and is fully credited to Hudson's chief of design from 1932-1954, Mr. Frank Spring.
