We have been travelling Route 66(the old road most of the way)from Chicago to LA.Been on the road 11 days now and last night was spent in Flagstaff Arizona.I will do a more detailed thread when I get back to Australia in 10 days.
However I want to give a special thanks to the Manager and staff at the Galaxy Diner at 931 W Highway 66.We went there last night and it will be one of the most memorable nights of the trip. This diner is a blast from the past.Well decorated, great staff, good food. They have a cruise night each
Friday.Shame we were there on Wednesday night but then we may not have got the very special service and attention. The manager was very generous and gave me some special mementos of the Diner.

So if you are a local HAMBER or are travelling through I highly recommend a stop at this place.

    Hi Paul.

I`m from austria (not australia ;-) !!! Was there several times. A place from the past.
This is a diner back from the 50`s . Good food, had a good time there. But it was very cold on January. Lot of snow. And no time for cruise night`s.
Thanx for sharing your time on Route 66.

    Chris

If I ever left the east coast, I think I'd move to Flagstaff, AZ. I've been there twice, once on a bus tour I took with my mom when I was 15, and again a couple years ago while driving across the country. Both times I ate at the Galaxy and it really is a fantastic place to visit. Great food, service and history. I remember the people in Flagstaff to be so generous, polite and gracious, except for the *****y Indian chick that owned the motel we were staying at...SHE WAS FROM NJ!

Funny, I did a search for threads to see if anyone's been to the Galaxy in Flagstaff and here it is.

I'll be up there this weekend for Independence day. It was 108' in Phoenix at noon yesterday and 74' there.

I have family up there and drove my OT "car" up the hill and left it in Flag for some summertime cruising. The truck can't fit all 4 of us and the Edsel is not quite ready for prime time.

By the way, we took a Route 66 road trip out to Meteor Crater last week. Be sure to check out the old "Meteor Crater Observatory" (Google it) What a cool and historic place. There is a very shot up 58 Impala 2 door out front and a little to the south is a pile of cars including a '41 Nash, a '38 Buick, a 37 Chevy and a few others. It was also a dump site for the old gas station and we picked up a bunch of rusty but readable old oil cans and some soda bottles.

Also Two Guns is totally abandoned and an extremely cool place to explore. My daughter didn't like it from the moment we stopped - She said it was creepy and something seemed scary. We later googled it and read of all the killing and death that happened there. It seems she was right.

If you see me around Flag, say hi or just flip me off like everyone else does when I'm doing 55 in a 75 zone:

I wonder if it is the same diner that I went to in 1969? I spun off the road in the snow in April!! I asked the girl behind the counter if there was a towing company within walking distance. One of the locals at the counter said wait till we finish and I'll pull you out. He pulled me out and refused any money for his trouble. Nice folks out there! I've always wanted to go back. Maybe someday.

Hey Flagstaff is my old stompin grounds. My Uncle Owned McCoy Motors (He's p***ed on now), I spent a lot of time there since I was raised in Prescott (another cool spot). The last time I was through there about a year ago one of the landmarks on the main drag was closing (according to the waitress). The Grand Canyon Cafe was a great old time spot for some breakfast, anybody know if they closed?

It's still open (I saw it yesterday) and has no appearance of closing anytime soon. -- Unless the county health inspector says differently!

When I first moved to Flagstaff, I'm pretty sure there was a Perkins there. A couple of years later they remodeled whatever it was to the Galaxy. I ate there a couple of times and it was OK, but I preferred Mike & Ronda's for their Chili Size, or the Grand Canyon Cafe for a real Rt. 66 diner.
