Lucky,
I don't know exactly what year the boat is, but I would guess 1958-63 or so. I haven't looked that one up.

I was leaning towards some of the aluminum boats he has - especially a make called Duratech. Duratech boats were manufactured near where I grew up. They competed in the New York to Albany Marathon on the Hudson when my family had a summer place on the river, so the Duratech would have a nice nostalgic tie-in for me.

So many of the fifties-era boats are really eye-poppers. Fins appeared on both aluminum and glass boats.(Everybody knows fins make a boat go faster!) I spotted one glass boat a few years ago which was styled after the '57 T-bird - fins, matching chrome, look-alike seats etc.

Kustom55, is this Alex's old boat?

Sure is, I took those pix back a few years ago when he had an all Pontiac party at his house.

Lucky,

The back of the hardtop on mine slides into rails on the sides, and then two nuts hold the front to the windshield. Goes off and on in seconds.

Was an original factory option. You could either get the hardtop, a convertible top, or none at all. (found this out in an original brochure someone had posted online)

The pic is from my in-laws cottage, on a small inland lake in southwestern Michigan. That's where I keep it now. Just happened to be a cool sunset at the end of its very first day back in the water since the Nixon administration.

5. Its still his. I had to take some pix because it is the coolest shaped boat I have ever seen. I moved from CA to Austin, Tx about a year ago and same as you, I havent heard from him. Tried to email but got no reply. I know he's a busy guy though

6. I've owned boats for the last 25 years......I always considered them to be a hole in the water where you throw your money.

A friend has a basic looking boat that has fins. It sits in his yard stripped to just a hull. He wants it gone, just come and take it.

Lucky, thanks for the info! [IMG] After looking at a section called "still in use" boats, we found one similiar to ours and belive it to be a Skagit Sportster built between '57 and '60.
This is what our boat is supposed to look like...

....and with the optional hard top....

Maybe we can get ours that nice!

24. My favorite is the "Yellow Jacket" Capri.
The fins were kind of diminutive but they ran awesome double-bubble windshields.
Google - Yellow Jacket boat history for a look at the whole line sometime.
Very progressive design for the mid to late 50's

25. you know this thread is over 4 years old right? and during tech week......

The Herter's Rocket was a crazy boat - only 13' long but rated for up to a 75hp outboard. My dad had a '56 Herter's "Chrome Fiberglass Duofoil World Famous Deluxe Flying Fish" (Herter's like to go overboard when naming their products. :) ) The fins were big cast aluminum things that bolted onto the fiberglass hull.

There's a little history on Herter's boats here: http://www.acbs-bslol.com/Classicglass/Herters.htm
