There aren't that many 38-39 Fords out there, Stock Car Racing ate up most of them. How many different grilles did Ford offer in this time period? Were the hoods different as well?

Man I hate to say this but it's "grille" --- a grill is what you throw your beef paddy on in the back yard.

    I know it sounds petty...

Not to hijack, but are front fenders different from 37-39 standard?

'37 & '38 Standard should be the same. '38 Deluxe & '39 Standard should be the same.

'37 & '38 Standard share the same hood too.

    Grilles:
38 Standard... a simple grille reminiscent of the 37 but totally different with a flat hood, a stamped stainless center bar and the bars carried back into the hood side panels.
38 DeLuxe... under a new parrot beaked hood with a chrome-plated die cast center bar with a V8 emblem at the top with the 8 overlaid on the V and a lazy V8 emblem on each side just aft of the grille bars.
39 Standard...simlar to 38 Dlx. but chrome-plated diecast center bar has V on left and 8 on rights side at top and Ford emblems just aft of grille bars on the hood sides.

    Fenders:
    37 by itself
    38 Standard by itself
    38 Dlx-39 Std same

    Hoods:
    37 by itself
    38 Standard by itself
    38 Dlx-39 Std same

    One more question on this.

How can you tell the fenders apart? Off of the car, that is...

    Thanks in advance.

38 deluxe and 39 standard hoods are dimensionally close but are different where the hood handle and trim mount at the beak. They look close but trying to make a 39 standard hood work on a 38 deluxe is a tall order. I went through this and swore to never buy another 38 deluxe without the correct hood.

I don't doubt any of this but would like to know the differences in the '37 & '38 Standard fenders & hoods.

    Thanks, Jim

38 standard hood has an extra bead along the edge that a 37 does not....

37 std and dlx fenders are the same, and are unique to 37, the side panels swoop up at the grill.

I believe that 38 std & dlx and 39 std fenders will interchange.... never done it, though

And also because the stainless trim is below the belt-line (see pic of mine below).

Roadster36: 37 Coupes do have rain gutters.

Looks like the grille and hood info is sorted for certain, and the fact that 37 fenders are unique.

Anyone have definite info on 38 and 39 standard and deluxe fenders?

  28. I don't know about US models but Aussie deluxe guards (Fenders) interchange. The main difference is the up sweep from the running boards. On 38 standard they sweep up like a 37 in a gentle curve. The deluxe guards have the same 'hump' shape as the 40 guards.
The 37 guards are easiest identified by a ridge that runs along the center of the guard (Along the axis), no other year had them.

Thanks for all the info, I guess it is the '38 Deluxe that I don't think I've ever seen in the 48+ years of car hobby life.

I've done it! Heres how, cut the firewall out of a '38' Standard including the side panels where the guards bolt on, replace with a '38' Deluxe, then bolt on the deluxe guards (fenders).

As 'Doc' said, the guards are a different shape as they rise above the running board, and the mounting holes are different.
