Maybe you should "tinker" with something less expensive than an automobile or that is, a complete automobile. Maybe get a project flatty and stick it in the ba*****t and go through the whole thing. It'd cost less than three grand, for sure, and you'll learn a bunch.

Not having a garage doesn't help "tinkering" on a whole car, especially a free one.

There is no such thing as "free" when it comes to vehicles... or so I've learned.

  3. they are out there. you could buy a running 65 chevy sb for less than 3gs no problemo

i have no ba*****t or garage what would i do with a flatty? thanks for the ideas though.

its more about the cruising and time spent with friends and family. i enjoy being around old cars and hot rods, and i want my daughter to expierence it while she is still young and impressionable. right now what daddy does is still cool to her.

dhughins, read up on the guy who traded a paperclip for, I think it was, a house.
I have spent my life doing similar things.
keep trading up til you get what you want

You said you wanted a project... As a kid, my Dad brought a 66 BSA Lightning motor to me in a few cardboard boxes along with a manual and said, "There's my tools, figure this out."

I didn't need to have a complete motorcycle to have fun. So, what would you do with a flatty? Build it, then get a free this and free that... axles, wheels, whatever.

    Be creative, man.

if you have the money, why not pick a starting point like an engine and go from there. you have to start somewhere. rebuild it in your living room if you have to, then find something to put it in, working on engines is a good family experience too. I understand the situation,i have a garage and a project car and i haven't had the money to even work on it at all. just am blessed to have what i have, :)

Check out Craigslist Atlanta, Georgia. There are usually some rides on there in your price range. There was a '51 Ford kustom on there last week that was running and driving for an asking price of $3500. It had some kind of tube grille, what appeared to be '57 Custom rear quarters and taillights, and 283 Chevy (the reason I wasn't interested) for power. Looked a little funky and rough around the edges, but was a great start for that kind of money. Anyhow, just trying to help.

I was good to go on this until you said that you'd have to borrow the cash. WTF ??? You just got through a rough time , enjoy the family and don't build up debt for the sake of a build. More important things going on right now. If you can score one for free , GREAT but don't use money you don't have chasing a dream. Good things come to those who wait !!! Good Luck To You.... and i mean it.

Weird,no one came down on me a long time ago when I borrowed the cash to get my first car.Paid it off in a few months, then started bartering and now I have one of the cars I always wanted.Anyways,PM sent to the OP,and good luck.If my son was still alive I'd be doing whatever I could to put a smile on his face and spend time with him.

You can probably have something shipped from TX to Alabama for very short money on uship.com, it's kind of like ebay but you post a shipment and shippers bid on it. They have either good feedback or bad feedback just like ebay, that's how you know who to choose. Just find someone that can give you the right shipment details at the right price. I had a truck shipped from GA to CT a few months ago for about $1000, so TX to AL shouldn't be too bad.

dude I'd be happy if I came even near to $3000 to spend on a project! sorry about your wife and all, but if you still got 3 grand to spare you're about $2900 better off than me. and if you're in S-E AL, I used to live near there, and there's a LOT of $500 projects there. U-Haul trailer is $55 incl tax. $45 in gas, and you got yourself a complete car with work for $600. don't whine, act like a man!

I'm an FNG and am very respectful of what I post and to the people who have been here and done that. I cannot believe this, no way can I understand how someone could actually make this request. Sorry if I offended anyone but this is not hot rod welfare.

whats wrong with asking for a hot rod project its almost like a wanted ad? i'm not asking for a cherry 32 ford, 55 chevy, or 69 camaro. i'm just asking who out there knows where in my area i can find a $3000 or less project. i honestley had no idea it would bring **** hatred. i'm not on welfare. i'm not asking the government or OBAMA for a bailout. geesh!
i work 2 jobs and have been looking locally for a project and thought this would be a novel idea.
