WOW! This pic of Pat and Dale's car was like a bolt of lightening. I used to race with them @ 75/80. They were some good dudes. Lots of memories:eek:

I believe that was maybe a 1957 nationals photo roll over crash, safety concerns. I found this photo somewhere else also.

Damn good thread!! Those pictures of John "Freight Train " Peters are way cool. John lives here in Lakeport, Ca. He still does a lot of machine work, mainly for the local circle track guys, but still does all kinds of motor stuff. His brother Ed Peters has a shop by mine and my brothers. He is one hell of a dude. And talk about a wealth of information, holy crap. That guy can tell you some killer stories about drag racing in the 60's and 70's. Ed is currently building a twin engine desoto funny car project, well, he's been working on it for a few years, but still at it. Steel body, wedged like a slice of pie, about 3 inches off the ground, this think looks MEAN just sitting in the garage!! Thanks for all the bitchin' drag photos....LONG LIVE 70's FUNNY CARS!!!

I've got a few pics of "Plain Vanilla" taken by my older brother on visits to Amarillo in the early 60's. I'll get them posted soon as I can dig them up! Stay tuned...

Like I said on the Vintage Sprint Car thread, I would like to call your attention to Post 1818 on the Historic Stock Car Photos thread. It explains a lot about why I love this sport so much. Don't matter if you go straight, turn left, turn left and right.

  8. A couple of mid seventies funny car pics from the Pop Rod nats, the top shot is from 1974 and the bottom one is 1975.

I believe the weight became an issue on the fully enclosed cars, as they then needed to
carry a full onboard fire system like the funny cars...

I remember when Gary Ormsby debuted his rendition of the streamliner, they blew the engine canopy off the car at the Winternationals that year...I believe I have a photo, that I took from the cheap seats, of the canopy in the air above the car...
He was a helluva drag racer, but this car didn't give him any advantage...

The problem with liners on nitro is that they shoot themselves in the foot. The one thing all these builders overlooked, or didn't know at the time, is that a nitro engine is load sensitive. When you make a dragster slippery, it turns around and rebels by becoming fat and lazy. The Garlits/Jocko effort was the most obvious example of this effect.

This was at a time when 4 bangers powered were a low cost popular approach to racing. Classified as X/Dragsters. BTW, on the far side is Vic Kings Midnight Oil powered by on OHV kitted Model B block Ford. The car still exists and was raced for many, many years after this shot at Fontana was taken .
