I was there for those races at Fremont. got a Dave Bell poster for one of them around here somewhere. wonder if I have any pics...
AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still remember this car driving down the street at the 1989 nats in St. Paul. They cleared the street, and it came thundering in from the north end past where we were parked. It got to the block in front of where I was sitting on the curb with a can of pop. The thing was so nasty, and shook the ground so much, my pop fell off the curb!
Man I remember that car like it was yesterday. Blown Chevy running high 9's at a buck seventy. It also inspired the Rotund One (Fat Jack) to build his Orange 46 to battle for the title World's Fastest Street Rod.
If I remember correctly, much of that car was built in what later became Keith Russell's home garage in Stanton/Anaheim. Keith painted for Boyd in the '80's/'90's. JH
Morland ran a BBC on alcohol. And, it is not the world's fastest 40 Ford. Steve San Paulo ran his 40 Coupe with Goodguys a few years ago, and ran near 200 in AA/GS, also a completely stock bodied ford.
@beeper ... Cool thread ... brings back lots of good memories. I was there that day too! ... I remember watching Fat Jack's roll-over and the "Don't Anybody Move" like it was yesterday! (somewhere) I've got lots of photos of both of these cars @ Baylands (Fremont) Raceway.
That car was built by Tom Vogel who later became the editor of Street Rodder Magazine. I was also at the Nats in St. Paul when Jerry had it there. I can tell you that when he fired it up for a drive-around everyone was at curbs edge to see it rumble by. IMO one of the most awesome street cars ever built. Frank
I was there also on Cole Cutlers 34 that was racing fat jack when it went on its roof also I gave fat jack a ride to the sceen of the wreck on the track Bear
That's correct ... Tom Vogele was a staffer at SRM in the early 80's ... went to work for Boyd for a few years ... and in 1985 opened his own shop (where he built Moreland's "Project 40") ... in 1987, he returned to SRM (as the editor) ... Tom is currently the editor of NSRA's streetscene magazine (taking over for Joe Mayall who passed away May 31, 2009).
I saw it on a trailer down in the Back to the 50's auction a few years ago. It looked like a mild pro-street car then. It did hve a bunch of documentation that it was THE 40 though. Not sure if it went through the auction. I believe it has been restored to race trim though......
Seem to remember reading that it sold at one of the big auctions a couple years ago for $70k. Or am I hallucinating again?
i like this car...other than the wheels and scoop you wouldnt really think of it as FAST.it looks like a normal nice 40 sedan. no stickers or flashy paint...but its a bad S.O.B.
In my opinion the roots of Pro Street can be traced back to that awesome black '40 Ford sedan. It was hands down the baddest street legal car on the planet when Jerry first brought it out. It was not a super lightened car. It looked like many other quality Street Rods that were built for traveling comfort. I only saw it one time but it left a lasting impression on me.
Possibly my favorite car. Ever. I heard that it was sold to someone in Elkhart, IN which is a town over from here. I'm trying to do a where is it now piece for issue #3. So if anyone has any info please drop me a line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These were "pro-street" cars, ya'll do remember that right? I thought that was a no-no on here? Just kidding, blown, on alcohol with a tag on it does it for me everytime! I loved that '40!
Always one of my favorite cars. It did go thru the auction at Back to the 50's in 2008. No mention of it's history. I think there was only one bidder and didn't meet reserve. A few photos And my car, looks like Morelands kinda made an impression on me
