What was the name of that movie with Mickey Rooney racing midgets in the 1940's? That's my favorite.

    Can we include

    'The Lively Set'

    In here somewhere?

Or go onto youtube and search for 'The Cool Hotrod' parts 1-3.

    Cheers, Glen.

The movie "The Lawless" has some good car action and has a 40's era fenderless 27 T roadster with flathead and all, it gets turned over by a angry mob because they didn't like the 3 guys riding in it. Its a serious story about race relations in California about Chicanos and was suppose to be a true sory. I saw it on TBS . I think the movie was made before the fifties.:D

  7. Not really my car scene but the last American hero was pretty good.

  8. For me i have to give to Christine for pole position.
    Then Running on empty.
Theres one that allways sticks in my head "Book of love".
Great merc, and $75 buck 50 chev convertible pulled out of a swamp.
Wish there was cars around that price now....

  10. I'm suprised that no one's mentioned Bikini Beach ... for the great drag scenes.

  11. What, no one has seen Gumball Rally? Much better than Cannonball Run, which came after it. Michael Sarazan and Raul Julia, funny, great cars.

  12. Vanishing Point
    Two Lane Blacktop
    Hot Rod the Movie
    Bullitt
    Gone in Sixty Seconds (original)

I was really young when I saw Bullitt. At first, I'm like, yeah this is boring, then there is this badass car chase and I was hooked.

I justchannel surfed to Bikini Beach...
Caught the last drag race seen , car chase & fight. I noticed Tommy Ivo dragster. Also noticed in the Credits that Tommy was the Tech Adivsor for the movie, Also mention of Famosa in the credits.
Searched the HAMB for mention of this movie , going to go look at Amazon for it..

"The Lively Set" is a great film, hot rods, land speed record, Chrysler Turbine car, and Pamela Tiffin!
But did you know this 1964 film was actually a remake of "Johnny Dark" a 1954 tony curtis classic?
Both of these are out of print but I found them available at http://www.ashfaultsclassicmovies.com/productlistj.html

I'm going to jump in on this thread since it's a favorite subject of mine.. I'm also a film (yes reel/real film) collector. My primary interests are Hot Rod/JD (Juvenile Delinquent)/Monster/SciFi/Horror mostly with a drive in flair and from the 40's all the way up to the early 60's but mostly 50's

I search for film with cars in it.. the list that follows is not only about the cars but the subject matter.. the JD's that owned them! These are the guys that created the culture.. soupin' up their cars and hotroddin' around town to impress the girls.

Films I own in no particular order of preference. These films are as much about the culture as the cars.

The Giant Gila Monster.. corny but a great showcase of cars!

Earth vs The Spider.. Great giant bug movie with lots of shots of a Deuce

The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow.. Tommy Ivo lots of cars, cornball

Hot Rod Rumble.. this is a great little gem with a Marlon Brando knockoff
great depictation of a car club, lot of cars!

American Graffiti.. What can I say that hasn't been said?

High School Confidential.. Rock and Roll, JD's, Hot Rod Race,
    Uncle Fester as a gangster.

Heart Like a Wheel.. great depictation of early drag racing through
    Shirley Muldowney's career.

Invasion of the Saucer Men.. Kids and a few shots of their hot rods

The Blob.. again kids, some reverse drag racing and shots of their cars..

I was a Teenage Werewolf.. Nice shot of a shoebox convertible and this is
One of the quintessential Drive In Movies!

Rebel Without a Cause.. Chickie Run! Switchblades! Rebellion! Angst!

    Films I'm looking for!!

    Bikini Beach
    Hot Rod Girl

These are all movies I love that are in one way or another tied to Hot Rods and the Kids in that culture..

We'll be watching Rebel without a Cause at my Drive in! This Saturday night. So far about 25 Hot Rods attending.
    Enjoy the movies!

Flathead Pat clearly knows his hot rod movies. That's almost exactly the list I was going to post. If you've never seen The Giant Gila Monster, you need to check it out.

Why is there a thread on this 50 times a month ?!?!?!?

  24. If you were like me and liked Bullitt for the cars AND the driving then I have to throw in the chase scene from Ronin. As an avid early BMW ///M car collector too this movie was fun to watch.

The rest have pretty much all been posted ad nauseum.

This may not qualify as a TRUE Hot Rod movie... But, let me suggest "Paper Moon". Many of the scenes take place along the roadway in Depression era Kansas and 30's period cars figure heavily in the story. The movie is great in it's own right as well as appealing to old car lovers.

Hi Axle, I can't personally vouch for 50 times a month. But I'd say that movies, especially drive in movies with hot rods and teens the kind that were aimed at youthful audiences figure heavily in the love of all things Americana.. Like Hot Rods, Jukeboxes, Movies, Music, Dances, The soda fountain... these things all evoc emotions in the people that grew up around it and lived through it. Man it ain't just about the cars! It's about a way of life. A way of life that's fading away.

I can talk cars, jukeboxes, movies and anything related 100 times a month!
