I bought a model A coupe the other day and these americans came with it, they look nos, they are very nice, 15x6 5x5-1/2, and 15x8-1/2 5x5-1/2, they dont look like they have ever had a tire on em, nor mounted to a car, do americans usually say american racing on them or are they unmarked?

I think it was the other way around. You bought a set of Americans and got a Model A Coupe with them. Very nice find.

I think that shot was taken in the house... That's where Jeff likes to keep the "goods".

3 1/2" offset and 15 x 8 1/2" was the standard size. Just make sure to run some tubes in them. Farm fleet still sells the tubes for the tractor guys. Also, one way to tell if they are an early or late casting is by the shape of the "D" and also how the rim is machined going out toward the edge of the rim. Typically the early wheels did not have any markings on them.

Cool find Jeff! Any plans for them?..

  16. My 10" x 15" aluminum slot mags - circa 1985 - say American on the inside.

As do my spare pair of same size.

I think the name gets left off when the wheel is sold under another name - Sears etc.

I'm finding that to be true with the slot mags I have and have looked at.

    I have a pair of 4 1/2" x 15" US Indy Mags.
Identical except for one has Us Indy Mag cast on the inside and the other doesn't.

I've owned several sets of real Magnesium Americans and have never seen a set that has the name cast into the back. They usually had a small shiny silver sticker on the front side, between the spokes, that said "American Racing, magnesium". Naturally, the sticker usually fell off after a while. Your wheels certainly do look magnesium to me.

  20. stlouis has it right. Magnesium Americans never had the name cast into them, only a sticker.

My coupe's magnesium American Racing Equipment Torq-Thrust rear rims don't have any casting / foundry dates on them ... but the magnesium A.R.E. "Le Mans" Torq-Thrust front rims sure do:

  23. Those are prob pre American Palamiedes wheels. I just spent the afternoon with an old pal (saltflatmatt met him) and a couple hundred of his best vintage wheels.

  24. Huntin' wheels is kinda fun.

Bad thing now, I'm starting to stumble across five spokers....

Good thing is, I'm finding lengths of aluminum in 2", 3" and 4" solid bars from 6' to 12' long.

As well as a pretty good****ortment of aluminum tubing sizes in differing wall thicknesses.

Today, the neighbors pal drives in with his 70's era Ford half ton.
Beat all to hell and gone, but the slot mags look good....

  25. C9, I am on a wheel hunt right now as well. Scored a 16x4.5 early Ford steelie and a 15x 5 one today, REALLY want to match up the 15". Bit, I forget what years they came on?

  27. The Deluxe (cheaper) 49 Fords had a 16" wheel.

We couldn't wait to get 15's on the car and no one wanted the 16's so they got tossed . . . which probably accounts for their rarity.

5" x 15" sounds like 50 Ford up to perhaps 56 or so.

Depending on hub size you may be able to find a 5" x 15" - 4 1/2" pattern wheel from an early Econoline.
A friend gave me a set from an Econoline he was stripping, but the hub bore was too small to use with modern disc brakes or 9" axle hub registers.

I did give them to a pal and he told me they'd work fine on his 50 Ford coupe.

One fwiw is the early Mustang 14" wheels were a bolt-on to the 50 Ford on all four corners as well as on the front 11" brakes from a 53 Ford station wagon.
And the sturdier rear axle with it's 11" brakes from the same wagon.

Lower gears to boot, 4.27 with overdrive and the regular cars had a 4.10 with overdrive.

The early Mustang wheels were 6" wide I'm fairly sure.

Later T-Bird (four pass models) had 7" x 14" wheels with the 4 1/2" pattern.
They were the "hot" setup for a while.

Give it a couple of months and if you can't find one, there are a couple of junkyards here with a secret stash and for one, a secret location and both have quite a few 50's era cars.
The backspace measurement would be handy.

It's only 107* F here today and 102 to 107 predicted for perhaps another week.

Anyway I could check for you, but the yards know what they have and charge accordingly....
