I've noticed there are alot of bolt on shock kits that mount the shock off an extended stud from the spring shackle.

    Does this work?

Doesn't quite seem right to me.
Would there not be lost movement in the shock because the shackle is constantly moving on a horizontal arc whethers the shock should be working on a fixed straight up and down vertical movement.

Pete 'N' Jakes kit for reference.

on a four bar suspension the axle moves in a vertical motion, not an arc, but on a wishbone/hairpin suspension the arc is not a problem due to the generous rubber mounts on the shocks. all shocks are made to have some sort of give so they don't bind. some have heim type joints, most have Lots-O-Rubber

Are those more or less made for a car or truck with a forward mounted spring like a 35 to 41 ford? HRP

Yes, this is a kit to bolt onto a stock '35/'36 front end.

    Transverse spring, beam axle etc.

  5. on that pete & jakes shock setup the stud for the shock goes in the spring hanger on the wishbone , not on the spring eye. i have used several of those kits and they work fine

The part or the shackle with the stud on it should mount through the spring perch, and would not move in any arch. It would but a straight up and down movement.

ahh I didn't read his entire post. doh! I just ***umed he knew that the shock stud mounted on the perch side.

you do still get an arc from the suspension movement though.
