So what are the coolest taillights you have ever seen used? Searching for a set for my 1930 High Boy. Lets see some pictures. Dare to be different.
I see alot of these post's about "WHAT DID YOU USE ?" Lately. Seems No One wants to research or come up with "THERE OWN" style anymore. '50 Pontiac, '39 Ford, '42 Chevy were the most popular in the day, But i used some off an Orphane Brand car i will not name due to the fact i don't want to see to many of them out there. They are Nice, Era Correct and Pleaseing to Everyone who has ever commented on them. People need to use stuff They Like that fits the build Era they are going for & be creative and locate stuff they like.
1953 Hudson Hornet. 1959 Cadillac 1961 Chevy BelAir 1967 Firebird 1965 Chevelle 1966 - 1967 Charger 1949 Olds 88 1949 Cadillac 1965 - 1966 T-bird sequentials All nice, and can be used on a variety of builds.
I too scrapped the taillights my dad had from back in the day and replaced them with an offbrand car, period correct, to change the common Poncho light...(which he put on in 1959) Use what ever tail light you think you like, if you're building a late 40's style ride, then anything post 1950 isn't going to look right, so look at the multi brands there where and decide which light you like best. There are alot of Makes of Cars from the 30's which have many many many styles of lights that will work well with a Highboy. Be Creative, make it personal, its your car. Even for a 50's style car, people "back in the day" would use what they had near them from junk yards or five finger discounts at night... My uncle, when he owned my car (prior to my father) had x2 '32 taillights mounted to the rear fenders...my father switched them with junkyard finds of Poncho 1950 lights on the back when he ditched the fenders. Use what you can...google "Highboy rear" in images and see what you come up with if you are having a hard time. Or buy the book, "American Car Spotter's Guide" and flip through the pages.
'41 Oldsmobile. THE traditional hotrod tail light! http://www.carnut.com/cgi-bin/04/image.pl?/show/04/ark/ark144.jpg
I always thought the post-war Harley Davidson "tombstone" tail light would make for a cool hot rod look. It would take some work, as the mounting surface is slightly curved and they all have license plate brackets.
