Girlfriend, you're going to owe me big time for two things now ;) :D

    Trust me on this one

Grundy coverage premiums with your '66 F100 based in Atlanta, GA

$15,000 agreed value coverage $240.00 per year
$25,000 agreed value coverage $192.50 per year

How does this happen? Simple, two different underwriters for the two different amounts. Grundy uses one underwriter for the $20,000 and under crowd and a different underwriter for the over $20,000 crowd.

I'm sure the premium amount will be alittle lower if you actually live outside of the Atlanta area, I used area code 30301.

I know you've already paid Hagerty for the year but you might want to start the quote process with Grundy, get them to send you the paperwork, get approved, send them a check for the coverage for a year. Once your coverage starts then call Hagerty and cancel. They will send you a refund check for the pro-rated portion of the year that you did not use their service. Lets face it, it's the same premium costs for WAY more coverage. Better to be over protected then under protected.

With Grundy all you have to do is have liability on your daily driver, not full coverage.

Well, I'll be dipped. Hmm. I'll shoot you a PM here in a minute. ;)

I told my Allstate agent what I wanted and told them what happened with my old truck and that I didn't want it to happen again. She was the "middle man" for dealing with Hagerty. I think she's like a broker. She probably gets a little kickback from Hagerty.

I thought I had to go through Allstate to get Hagerty coverage, but the more I read, the more I find out that I probably could have done it on my own.

Up until I got my '66 in 2007, I had never had my own insurance. And I kinda got in a rush and got the Hagerty as soon as I got the truck back together and on the road.

You'll remember her help next time you think about insurance!

Most of the carriers of this type of insurance will deal directly with the car owner. Independent brokers sometimes have connections with them as well.

I had four collector cars that were severely damaged or destroyed in a tornado six years ago. All insured with Hagerty. Filed the claim, and was paid in three days on all four cars. Nothing bad to say about them from me, that's for sure.

USAA, on the other hand, are a bunch of unscrupulous *******s. Ask me how I know.

  10. Another reason I love this site...

If I can acquire the ol' Mopar I found,it will be a street/strip car. Bigdaddy, you mentioned that Grundy won't cover something occurring at the dragstrip, but it that(track usage) taken into consideration as far as the street-use coverage? The car would have a roll cage installed(my preference, and possibly required if it runs as I'd like),and would have a good quality set of belts/harness. My gf is an agent, but I'd like to have an idea what to expect. Thanks!

Yeah, that was another thing I read. That sometimes the Broker can get you a little better deal.

When I was reading on another Hot Rod forum, they were saying that Grundy or Hagerty neither one would cover a car with a roll bar/cage. Even if it's built as a total show car/clone. They do NOT like the bar being in it, that just screams "I wanna drive like a bad ***." Haha.

I have all three of my vintage cars insured by Hagerty. No problems, sent in my pictures as I added cars to my first policy with them. No fuss, very easy to deal with. Tried Grundy wasn't happy with them, after trying to get a show VW I had insured by them, didn't want to even want to hear about it. I will only go to Hagerty, always super nice on the phone and easy to work with.

  13. WrenchKitten;thanks for the info. Looks like the gf might have to do some searching if this deal comes to fruition. If I told them it came standard?... Nah,can't lie about that.
Sounds like some racers should chime in with some thoughts on this;I'm sure I'm not the only one pondering this question.

    funny

I JUST dropped state farm today!

I have had their coverage (or lack thereof) for 18 years but when I recently dropped one car from the policy to add another, they (state farm) asked if I could supply photos of the "new" car in question.

I decided that if I was going to go through the trouble I would just shop around.

    long story short..
I was paying state farm just under $200 a year for a general liability policy.

I sent grundy an email with photos of the 2 cars I wanted insured (all photos were candid shots that I have at one time or another posted here on the hamb..)

    and....

grundy is now insuring the cars at an agreed value coverage(split between the cars) of about 70,000 for just under 500.00 a year..

for the same coverage, hagerty's online quote system, showed a premimum of over 1000 so I contacted a hagerty "agent" (who sells hagerty insurance) who quoted me 1200 for the same coverage..

I would have looked into other insurance providers IF they hadn't required appraisals (which I didnt have time for)

    GO GRUNDY!

Does agreed value insurance cover gl*** breakage? I'm asking because the windshield for my '59 Ford convertible is almost unobtainum.

Yes, covers all gl***, even the smallest, tinyest chip, no deductible ever for anything. Remember, they have been in business a long time and have customers that have million dollar plus cars. Nothing is too rare or usual for them.

I have used Grundy but found their terms and conditions restrictive. I have been extremely happy with Hagerty. I (knock wood) have never had a claim but a buddy of mine needed extensive repairs to his E-Type (car was virtually totaled). He took it to a very high-end custom coach builder so that the repairs would be done right. Hagerty covered him no problem.

As for your question about making sure that your 'regular' coverage is high enough, why the heck would you not want to max out the coverage on your policy??? It is a false economy to scrimp on coverage, heaven forbid if something happens you could end up wiped out.

Can you be alittle more specific? I've actually found the opposite to be true and I've personally had both Hagerty and Grundy coverage.

Sure. Grundy did not permit any use of the car except hobby-related (to or from an auto show or repair shop, for example). Hagerty was OK with occasional incidental use (taking it to work or out to dinner, for example).

I know guys with Grundy-like policies who are always prepared to lie should something happen: 'yes, I was on my way to a car show in ****'. I am not comfortable with that type of thing and prefer to have a policy where all concerned agree up front on what is allowed.

Maybe Grundy and Hagerty both have different types of policies, but the above describes my experience with both.

BTW, Grundy was cheaper* and I still have Grundy coverage on the 49 Dodges that I have in dead storage (the ones I am trying to sell!!!!). For them the Grundy restrictions are a non-issue because the cars have not seen the light of day in 15 years or more.

*Makes sense; you can charge less for a policy with more restrictions.

You should PM BeckyFromGrundy or call them directly because with Grundy you are covered for occ***ional use driving the car to work, the store, out for just a drive in the country, etc. There are actually no restrictions on when and where you can drive you car except not on any type of race track or exhibtions of speed.

Also, there are no per year mileage restriction with Grundy. When I had Hagerty I got a phone call from Hagerty because they read in a mag that I drove my car 15,000 miles that year and they wanted to know if it was true. If you do drive your car insured with hagerty alot you should double check with them regarding their mileage limits so you're not caught off guard.

I've had just about everyone mentioned and now have Grundy and will stay with them. Could not be happier with the rates and service. Great Question.

I have Grundy world wide. Stated value insurance, what your car is worth, about $200.00 a year unlimited mileage. Had a claim last year had my full value in my hand in 7 days. 1 800 338-4005

Perhaps Grundy has changed their T's and C's since I first used them (almost 20 years ago). I will keep that in mind and I appreciate your letting me know, but as I said I have been quite happy with Hagerty.

  24. I just went through the same ordeal. My insurance compamy that I had my home, daily drivers, and collecter cars insured under suddenly stopped writing agreed value coverage. This sent my premiums through the roof with no guaranty that you could collect full value even if you could prove the cars actual worth. I just switched to Safeco for everything. I got 50k agreed value coverage on my 57 T-Bird for $286.00/6 months. I can suspend full coverage and just carry fire and theft when the car is in storage in the off season which is about 9 months out of the year in the great northwest. It makes coverage for me very reasonable. I don't know of any of the traditional cl***ic insurers that will allow you to do this, which make the cost per miles driven extreamly steep unless you live in one of the sunshine states. I can't insure my 31 Vicky until it is about 80% ***embled. This is true of most insurance companies. Do some real shopping around. Good Luck!

  26. I called State farm today. Been with them over 15 years. I wanted to put my new daily on in place of my willys wagon. The wagon has too many issues to keep driving so it's going into storage awaiting it's turn for restoration. They told me if I took it off, when I wanted to put it back on, it would be treated as an uninsured car and cost me substantionaly more to insure. PISSED ME OFF! It's not the money,as it's cheap to cover in storage, but the idea of paying more because I decide not to use the car. They didn't say anything when I took two other cars off. So now the're going to screw me if I do put them them back on.
Good timing on this thread. I think I'll shop around for all my cars. **** em!

After reading your post it got me thinking so i checked my Grundy policy. I've got full coverage for 12 months, agreed value @ $49,000 on my 41 chevy for $299.50 a year. Granted i don't drive it year round , but i could cause it's covered. Just my $.002 worth.

I have never had a claim but I had Hagerty for years on lots of different vehicles. Just for laughs I shopped Grundy for the same coverage when it came premium time. I switched to Grundy because they were a bunch cheaper for the same coverage. Again, I can 't compare service only the premium.

    I have Grundy, had Hagerty.

Hagerty wanted 1800 for over 100k on my roadster. Grundy is $505.00

Had a "incident" in the roadster 18 months ago, over 20k in damages. I was a wreck (the car too)! They (Grundy) held my hand & made it easier to deal with. Told me to take the car anywhere so I dropped it at So-Cal for 4 months.;) I had a check in my hands in a week. When additional damage was found on tear down- cut me another check, no questions asked. They did send out an appraiser to look at the car at So-Cal's shop but were more interested in fixing the car right rather than fixing it cheap. They treated me like a king & I'll never forget that.

    I talked to my long time friend and Grundy/Hagerty agent in Idaho. I posed this question to him and here is his response;

I've asked Grundy Worldwide the same question and I was advised that Grundy uses the $1.40 Rate Per $100 of Value if the Agreed Value is under $25,000 and uses the .55 Rate if the vehicle is 1945 and Older or .65 Rate if after 1945 to 25 or more years old, if the Agreed Value is $25,000 or higher.

The reason given is from Grundy's Experience the higher the value of the vehicle, the higher the level of care taken by the owner and the frequency of use is lower. The annual mileage may be the same or higher but the vehicle usage is more likely for Hobby Purposes, Car Shows, Rod Runs and Cruises etc. rather than being used on the weekends or evenings to go for a drive, family gathering or use for an occasional errand etc. Because of the amount of money and time that can get invested in the higher valued vehicles the Non Hobby Usage is usually lower.

Here's what the premium for your 40 Ford Pickup would be with $300,000 Liability Limits, $1,000 Medical Payments & Basic 50,000 UM Limits ($33.00)

    $15,000 Agreed Value X $1.40 = $210 plus $33 = $243.00
    $25,000 Agreed Value X .55 = $137.50 plus $33 = $170.50

I called Grundy Worldwide this morning and they confirmed that the rates used for Collector Vehicles in Atlanta, GA are the same rates that are used for Collector Vehicles in Idaho.
