Who has ran these deuce rails on their hotrod? ... i'm also thinking about purchasing them this week, but when i was ready to put my order in, i found out they come in two separate pieces( front and rear) and come with a fish plate to weld them back together. I asked why they did this and it was because of shipping reasons to get the cost down for the customer. How much more work is it to weld and line these rails back up versus just going with ASC ones? thanks for your time and knowledge cheers, cab
I built several frames many years ago with these rails before Shadow Rods bought the dies. He has improved them quite a bit. I didn't find it a problem to weld the rails together and when done properly you can't see the seam. They actually made a nice chassis.
The dies were originally built in West Branch Mi. the original company was "Precision Underbody" They sold like hotcakes and a article was done in Rod Acton on them, then the owner Steve went through a divorce and everything stopped dead. the truly unique thing about these frames is with the "X" member package they come out straight and dead on when assembled. In the Rod Action article they shipped the package out to Rod Action, they assembled it in there parking lot with hand tools and it was dead square,.... you just weld it up from there. Shadow Rods acquired the dies a few years ago and dumped a ton of cash into them to make them as close to perfect as they can be,... Jon Hall is a perfectionist, and these frames are sweet ! When I need a Deuce frame these are the only ones I will consider,...... I know a two piece rail sounds weird, but if you see these in person you'll know why I like them so much. (IMHO) The guy that built a Deuce 3/W on the very first set of these rails over three decades ago is still running the daylights out of it,.... he doesn't baby this car by any means and the chassis is still perfect.
Are they made in two pieces or cut in half? Can you pick them up at the shop as one piece rails? Side by side with an American stamping and a bare metal Henry what are the differances?
The way I remember it is that they are made in 4 pieces, R&L front and R&L rear. There is a flange at the joint where you bolt them together and a fishplate which you use when welding them together.
...this question was actually one of things i wanted to know as well? *** also i'm not running their X-member, so how hard is it to line them up with out Shadow rods X-member? thanks again fellas for the info cheers, cab
No they are made in two pieces, like I said Jon is a perfectionist,... the roll of the reveal line in the Shadow Rods frame is a dead on duplicate of the original Ford frame,.... unlike others in the industry,.... and you won't have to straighten out all the little ripples and gaul marks that you find on ASC rails. The other reason he decided to keep them two piece is that he will be offering different configurations of front and rear modifications,..... and any of these can be used together,..... it really is a cool deal.
Steve, We have built a couple frames using S.R. rails, one with our x-member and the other with a stock k-member. Don't let the "two-piece" issue scare you off. If you are building your frame in a jig it shouldn't be that big of a deal. If you are building it on the floor, it may be a little trickier. And remember, if you have any issues mounting that x-member, don't hesitate to call. I can walk you through that pretty easy. Matt Lesky Ionia Hot Rod Shop
Thanks Matt, These are the things i wanna hear Will call ...if i get into a bind somewhere! Thanks again, i'm super excitied and i'll be ordering those Shadow rods Deuce rails tomorrow. best wishes, cab
well, I got the frame rails and i also put them together with Scotty from Chuckles Garage and yes, these are by far the best repro 32 rails i have ever seen They go together very nicely, the trick is all in the fish plate though, it's lines them up perfectly Thanks to Jon at Shadow Rods for the cool set up and Matt from Ionia hot rods for the boxing plates and x-member! The frame is coming along nicely so far... Grace and peace† cab
I guess I'm dense, but...I'm still not following where the pieces join. Would you post some closeups of the joint area? Thx...
