Not really... This is CheaterChris' latest custom. A 1940 LaSalle full custom. He is acquiring quite the collection of great cars. This latest came from one of the clubs friends out in Waukesha. Steve put a bunch of work into this car and wanted to get out of it before it consumed him completely. Chris is taking over and plans to finish this car the way it deserves. Tell him what you think...

The grille is too cool - the rest is just gravy.

I did some horse trading to acquire this car. Its a 1940 lasalle coupe, It has 38 ford headlights grafted into the fenders, a 1946 ford coupe rear window. Its chopped 4 inches in front and about 7 in the back. The front end will come down a little bit more, but this car will not sit on the ground, it will be more like a 40s style custom..a little higher than alot of cars done today. A rear bumber is going on this week, and mock up some stainless trim, and getting it ready to body out and paint. My plan is interior this winter...light mohair with a couple of buttons pulled through. Hopefully my brother will keep you all posted with pics, my pics suck and he is good at it.

OK, do you really mean "...Tell him what you think..." ? well, here goes...

    Looks good!
Top chop and profile are right on target, but it looks like a '41 '48 Ford with '38 headlights retrofitted, at a funny angle, and a LaSalle grille.

Custom modifications usually put parts off the LaSalle on the Ford, not the other way around.

The Ford lights look like a '80's to '90's "Custom Rod" trick rather than a '40's-'50's Kustom modification. Just one step away from those plastic Mercedes headlights.

Unless you love them, or really just wanting to call it done, or respecting the previous owner's work, I'd change the headlights, (and back window) to something out of the GM or '39 Graham or even Chrysler or Nash parts catalogs.
I'll dig into specifics if you're on board with this idea.

I like the factory rolled rear pan on those cars and a pair of '55? Pontiac bumper guards would look good, well, look like the bumpers on the "Matador", on there.
I think it'd look good "eggplant" Purple, too!

Love it...... Always wondered what a kustom Lasalle would look like. They're beautiful in standard trim but that thing looks super slick. What colour do you have in mind?

well you asked what we thought. not diggin the headlights at all. not a fan of hardtopped 40's cars. even with proper glass installed though I may change my mind when it is done

kind of hard to tell but your grille looks like it is at an odd angle, but it is a somewhat distorted pic so maybe not.

    nice work though...

I love the thing! i have to agree with the headlight treatment though, seems a little odd, almost sticks out when you look at the front end. Takes away from the smooth look the rest of the car has. Makes it look like it needs a front bump to make the headlights look less prominent. Cant say that i dont like that car though! its bitchin! the hardtop treatment would look good with the right window frames.

  20. Hell yes! I am not sure about the front wheel opening with the shape of the front fender...................but overall..... I got movement in the pant area!
And the eggplant purple idea is a great one!

  21. I also think the headlights work, as they bring the grill to you in stages and are not visable from the profile, it would look even better if you could get a plain lens or more of a deco style...................but who the fuck am I, aye!

I respect everyones opinions, hey we asked for input. The headlights will stay the same, and I think the rear window flows great with the top. It will have no front bumper, the hood sides will get welded up this week, and a single piece of stainless trim along about 3/4 of the car. The color is a secret...but I am not a fan of purple, so thats out of the question, but it will be a subtile 40s dark color...not maroon. Okay thanks for the input.

Car looks great except the front end.

Headlights look out of place and I hate LaSalle grilles. I understand this is a LaSalle, but never liked the grille in any car and never understood what and why anyone would put one in anything. LaSalle grilles are the best way to screw up a 36 Ford.

LaSalle grilles on a custom make an Edsel look good.

Lose the front end in a dumpster, and you'll have something, cause other wise the car has great lines. Sorry, you asked my opinion.
