I am feeling the need for a wheel change on my coupe. I like the 50s theme but want to go with some new wheels for a change away from the painted steels. I tried changing to bias ply tires and 40 steelies. Not only was the wheel-look the same but I did not like the bias plys at all. So I am considering Americans Polished Salt Flats on my same tires. They are affordable! So what do you HAMBERS think?
If money is no object, a set of Real Rodders Wheels would look beautifull. (Yea, goofy name..they are the guys who bought Eric Vaughn.) EXELLENT quality and made in the USA. Be carefull with American Racing. Make SURE they are in stock before you order. I have had a set of TTOs on back order since Dec 08. They also back ordered the set of Saltflats I tried to buy for 6 months. Nice car, by the way. -Abone.
You mean these wheels? Partial to the painted version, but with the black car, I can see where the polished shiney look would be a good visual break. Not sure I am in love with those wheels and your tires you want to reuse. They look new. Tread and wall design that is. Skinnier littles and same size fats in the back. The older Goodyear wall. Just spitballing. Sweet car overall, and there isnt much I would change. I think with the wheel change though, you may have an over abundance of Red. Consider making your insert black. I know, out on a limb But it would look like a different car. Post some pics of your decision so we can all ooh and aaah
Your nuts brother. The wheels you have on your ride are perfect as is. But if you HAVE to change them. I think artillery wheels would look good, in Chrome or black with silver center, with your grill chromed.
Ken, Thanks for the input. Thats exactly what I was hoping for, fresh ideas from others. I like those grey salt-flats too but think that the clean -up with the polished ones would be easier. I was already considering new skinnier front tires. May consider the insert change too over the winter. Thanks again. Paul
Change EVERYTHING that's red in the picture to ANYTHING but red, and you'll be 90% golden. Add fat whites, and you're "done". That red/black thing has been beat to*****ing death already
Just didnt want to come across as a smart***** or know it all. I was going to do a red insert on my deuce, but with red engine, trans, rear, driveshaft and front spring, with a black car, added red wheels with whitewalls, I decided not to to the insert red. Its a neat look, and with a wheel change and painting an insert, man different car.
I wouldn't change a thing. The car looks perfect as is. If you really feel the need to change, go to Polished Torque Thrusts.
It looks good now, but change is always a way to get a fresh new look to the whole car. I think a Radir wheel of some sort would be a different look, but would keep a traditional feel.
hay cool car i have 33 3 windo thought abought radirs but went with astro supreams instead look cool and i can buy 3 sets for what some wheels cost and a wheel change will give a car a whole new look with out a major cash influx as for leaving it alone sceardey cats, what the most you have to do change back jim
I go back and forth between painted steel wheels with bias ply tires to salt flats with radials just to have different looks.
Whatever one thinks about the Red black thing it looks pretty timeless. Especially on that car. How about Tourqe thrusts with red spokes or paint the steelies gunmetal grey with a red stripe.
I might get slammed for saying this, but there was a duece at The Lonestar Roundup this year with painted Daytons that looked different, but extremely nice and timeless. The Saltflats looks good, but they are quickly getting overdone, like Torq Thrust. The chrome steelies would also look good.
Take a look at my Avatar. I run red wheels with rings and caps. I also have a set of Chrome rims with the same size tires and black walls. It changes the whole look of the car!! Good luck in your decision
I like the car as it is, looks good. For a change, get chrome reverse steelies. You should be able to get a set that will take the 50's era Mercury hubcaps. (I have a pic if need be.) I suggest too, buy a 2nd set of tires so you can go back and forth between styles. You'll have to do a bit of shopping, but narrow blackwall radials are out there. Granted, not a bias ply, but the narrow tires have a bit of a bias flavor and fit well with the 'trad' look. Here's a couple pics of my 31 roadster with narrow radial. And a head on view of the 32 with narrow (5") wheel and narrow radial.
Okay, I'll chime in here. I was looking to do something different on my '33 - trying to keep the old timey look on a close to stock car. I went with 1936 Buick Roadmaster (only) 16" x 5" Artillery wheels with Diamond Back Classic Series I 16" tires (195/75 16" front and 225/75 16" rears - also available with no name blackwall - these puppies are radials but have a bias ply look with the sawtooth sidewall pattern. I'm thinking you could do the same with black artillery wheels pinstriped in cream or white with your choice of blackwall or whitewall tires for a real old timey hot rod look. Wheelkid here on the HAMB can make you some 16" artillery wheels - these tires are only available in 16" diameter. Personally, I would also lose the red grille insert - like red steelies and whitewalls, it has been done to death. To make your car truly transformable you need to lose anything which sticks out like a sore thumb - IMO....
