My 12 yr. old son and I flew to Calif, and trailered my Dad's '68 Chrysler to Ohio. He's in bad health and I'm working at getting it back on the road. Used his pick-up and trailer...so naturally I had to drive the truck and trailer back and fly home.

Trip from CA to Ohio took 2 1/2 days; left Sat. morning, got here Monday night. Unloaded on Tuesday and left at 4:30am Wed morning. Got to LA Thursday night at about 9:00.

The trip from CA to Ohio was the best ever. Got to spend some real quality time with my son. A trip we will never forget. We had a flat tire 4 hours into the trip, rest was pretty good. Every time we stopped, he was out the door first checking tie downs, car cover etc...

  6. When I was living in Germany, I found a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere I wagon that was converted to a hearse from new, by an outfitter in Belgium. Bought the car with just 27K kilometers (around 16,800 miles!). When I left Germany, I shipped the car home through Houston, then drove it home. Counting shipping mileage, maybe 8,000 miles or so!

I've driven to north-central North Dakota for a '56 Hudson Super Wasp, which was about 1125 miles one-way. It was not a project, but a complete runner that was in excellent condition.

Far as a real project goes, I figure Corpus Christi, TX is about it, at 700 miles, plus 200 miles to go to Tulsa to get the remains of a Triumph for a fellow HAMBer and take it to CC, and bring the panel truck home...900 miles total to get a project.

I picked up my '63 Pontiac Tempest Lemans convertible with a car dolly in Missouri. Since the steering wheel wouldn't lock, I had to pull it with the rear wheels on the ground. For those who are unfamiliar, they have their engines under the hood and transmissions in the rear under the trunk. They were connected by a spring-steel drive shaft that arcs down under the floor under tension. They called it a, "rope drive." Anyway, it was a little more involved to take off then your regular drive shaft.

So I filled the LeMans' gas tank, started the engine to circulate the automatic transmission fluid, popped it into neutral and pulled it 9 hours back to Texas. No problems. I stopped every once in a while to make sure it was still running.

I may be a fool, but I don't understand why some people say you shouldn't pull a car long distances with a car dolly. I've done it numerous times with no mishaps or problems. I see RV'ers doing it all the time. If you're of that persuasion, why do you think it's a bad idea to pull a car long distances with a car dolly? What's the problems you've encountered or feared?

When something gets into a slide, side to side across the road (Fishtail), so named for the action motorcycle riders get when it happens to them, legs start slapping the tank.

"Tank Slapper" is a term used alot in motocross. When you go through whoops or a series of bumps the bike gets out of control and your butt ends up slapping the tank.
My dad pulled my suburban 100 miles back to Phoenix when we broke down coming back from California. U-haul said it wouldn't fit so he told them we had a 1972 Pinto. We wedged it on there, pulled the drive shaft and went home. Pulled just like a trailer. He had an F-250 Crew Cab. I pulled a 1975 Cadillac with my K-5 blazer and almost crapped my pants before I got home. That tank pushed my truck all over the road!! I think the tow vehicle makes a big difference.

In 2004, I flew from Edmonton to Vegas, bought an off topic foxbody sw, and drove home, it's about 1487 miles one way:)

Then in Sept of 2008, I drove to a buddys place in BC, then we jumped in his pickup, trailer in tow, and headed to Prince George to check out a Thames 1/4T delivery. My mileage for that trip was just shy of 1300....but the Thames didn't follow me all the way home, as it is being stored @ a friends place up north untill I'm ready to tie into it:)

both my projects were bought from fellow HAMBers and went to pick them both up. the 53 I went to covington va. and drove it home, and, the F100 we went to Andersonville prison in S. Georgia to pick up. so one trip was like 850 miles both ways and the GA trip was around 1500 miles round trip....

  15. A son and his father drove from Oklahoma to Montana with trailer in tow to get the 35/36 pickup he purchased. I think they left on a Thursday, loaded up at midnight and were planning on being back home in OK by Sunday eve.
