3/8 rubber fuel line to 5/16 hard line????

Alright, lots of beer isn't helping me figure out this simple problem.

I'm running 5/16 hard fuel line to supply fuel to my flathead six. My electric fuel pump and filter are all plumbed with barbed fittings for 3/8 I.D. rubber fuel line. Question: how do I get a leak free connection where the 3/8 rubber line meets the 5/16 hard line?

Will a flare on the hard line, combined with a clamp, secure this connection or do I need to plumb this differently.

I know this is really stupid, guys, but I have never had to make a rubber to hard line connection before.

Flame away or point me in the right direction. I just want to do this once without spewing fuel all over the place.

Slide on down to your closest Ace Hardware and procure some 5/16 barbs to replace the 3/8. Threads in the pump are pipe thread, so pick up some Permatex Aviation dope while you're there.

 

I'm sure you can find, while picking thru the br*** fitting selection at any parts store, a combination of 5/16 compression to pipe (either 1/8 or 1/4) and from there to a 3/8 barbed fitting.

 

Ya know, I once was in a pinch and had to do this exact same thing.. I used 2 hose clamps on the connection and it didn't leak at all. In all honesty I completly forgot about it cuz it never leaked, ran the car that way for years.. But I feel like a hack admitting that. Do what the guys above said!

You can either JUST start a flare on the end of the 5/16 or, solder a compression ring onto the end of the 5/16, then use a hose clamp. All you're trying to do is to keep the 3/8 from "sliding" off the 5/16...

 

Ask for fuel injection hose. It will outlast the cheap stuff 10 to 1 on todays gasoline. Use two screw type clamps, one facing each way.

 

or put a bubble flare on the end, the edges won't cut into the rubber when clamped

Also use fuel injection clamps instead of the worm screw clamps. FI clamps don't cut the hose, they never loosen, and they look a lot more traditional.

Your best advice came from fridaynitedrags but in a pinch if I were in Baja and tryng to make it to the next pit/fuel stop I would probably just double clamp it.

Never the less you're not in Baja, and even if you were the sponsored cars have already corssed the finish line so you might as well hop on down to Ace and make it easy on yourself.

 

Make a dog knot with the double flare tool. Works everytime.

You can also put on a br*** compression, the kind with the round crush ferrule. Tighten it down real good then take the fitting off.. Leave the crushed down ferrule to act like a good bubble flare..
