I hope this doesn't go in the wrong direction, I guess it is more of a why question.

I was fortunate enough to eat breakfast with Mr Chili Catalo a few times before his death. He was friends with 3 Deuces ... ( fellow HAMB member ). We at the Nationals a couple of times at the same time and got invited over. :D

He was a very nice guy and quite humble about his famous 32 3W.

Since he's dead and we don't know, lets just leave it at that. Anything else would be speculating.....

There's probably a very innocent explanation. That symbol has been widely used in many, many cultures, including Native American. Check the ""Wickpedia" if you want to see an example of such a use.

Thats true....BUT, that car was built just about 13-14 years after the end of World War II, which, you would think, would make a swastika "off limits", even if you were using it for a reason other than the Nazi version.
If the image is disturbing to some today, I would think that in the late 50's it would have been really offensive, especially to all the veterans who had fought in the European Theater.

I, too, think it was either for another reason or was unintentional in its possible offensive nature. That said, it was still a bad idea....

    Back then Swastikas were everywhere.
Remember German type helmets for bikers?
It was the sign of a rebel of sorts.
    I'm sure he wasn't a Nazi sympathizer.

  19. no big deal, they were everywhere on the 60s....surf nazis, bikers, I think Roth even used them in a couple of his drawings...........now we gotta act all PC..........The car stands on its own merit Didnt Barris claim to do a bunch on the car??

Maybe it's a case of someone putting it there for pure shock value, just to piss people off... and then it made it onto a magazine cover!

Why it's there is less puzzling to me then why no one at the magazine caught it and blacked it out or something...

  21. The Swastika was a good luck symbol centuries before the Nazi's got a hold of it. Hitler was into the occult big time. I don't think the real objection to Swastikas started in the US until the last 20 or 30 years. They haven't been able to show the symbol on box art for models of Nazi aircraft for a long time in Europe. Same here now. Even the decals are printed in halves or not at all.

  22. I saw some in iron railings on some buildings in Sigon Viet Nam in 1971. Thought it was strange then too.

  23. Not to be OT, but theres a couple houses in Spokane that has a swastika logo in brick on the chiminys. Houses were built 20's or earlier.

The manhole covers in Concord, NC have a swastika on them or did ad least up until a while back. Never was given an answer but I'm sure it wasn't for the political party but more along what seesko said. Although those Beach Boy fellers certainly looked the part of the Nazi youth party!!! Just kidding.

    Nice eye Royal.

I pretty sure you're on to something with the surf nazi thing. I remember that kind of stuff growing up in San Diego...
