Jack Costella and crew went 278.9 at the three mile, with an exit speed of 284.7 in the Fuel Flathead Liner. The above photo is a couple of years old. Jack has run a number of engines in this car, including a 406 SBC. Rich Fox here on the HAMB can elaborate, as he and Jack are Buds. **************************************************************************
Jack is one of the smartest guys out there. Imagine what would happen if he had the resourses of some of these folks.
The car is currently under the care and feeding of Rick Yacoucci, who took the NT2 'liner to a 348 mph record with slightly over 1500cc, and 360+ one way. Now running Jacks NT3 car with the Pappas and Stevens flathead Rick is shooting for 300. Also note that Don Ferguson 3 set a new **F/FS record around 310 mph with Ardun power. Henery should be proud. Some of Jacks stuff and the Pappas & Stevens motor attached
Very impressive and interesting. Wow that's fast. Unlike the one that powered flatfire it looks like the original location intake ports are in use, yes? Are there anymore engine photos out there? Some would sure be cool on my ~No Valve Covers Allowed~ page http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=152
Car went 330 one way on gas and two way record at 304.151 with an unblown 300 inch SBC. Home made fuel injection on factory low riser four barrel manifold
Cab, Are you sure those are Kong heads? Seems I recall a different name when I saw them before. I could be wrong, I was once before years ago Frank
Fab if you look real close on one of those engine pix you can see "KONG" machined into the head at the top/centre of the head !! Rat
Congrats to the entire Yacoucci & Costella Nebulous Theorem II Streamliner team ... well done! I've got of bunch of pics of the "Neb" I, II, & III 'Liners @ B'ville ... but like @RichFox, I can't seem to find them right now ... I'll keep looking. In the meantime, here's a short video clip of the NT II 'liner (with a 4 cylinder) going 330+ mph on the Salt:
Thanks for posting . Got to look through one of their prism canopys one time, and was amazed at how well you could see through it. They replied that you wouldn't want to go 300 unless you could see perfectly. No kidding. Really great out of the box thinking on every aspect of their cars.
Is Ferguson running a Ford block or one of his Ardun specific blocks? I guess French and Aluminum flats are outlawed so maybe the rules for Arduns don't even allow that?
It's my understanding that replica blocks are not allowed. OEM only. The French blocks were deamed to be replicas
Those are KONG heads. They backed up the record on Monday for a whopping 280.023 MPH. They acheived this without the benefit of NITRO! Dad (Jimmy Stevens) said if the motor looks good they may just go after the gasoline record this week. Hopefully a turbo and 300+ next year!
253 MPH on gas Tuesday! [Entry 1788 XF/GS Costella + Yacoucci + Pappas + Stevens] http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Speed%20Week%2009/down_runs_11.htm
Found the picture I was looking for. Nebulous Therom 1 in front followed by NT2, NT3 the flathead powered car is not pictured, The yellow 5050 motorcycle, followed by the blue Costella- Denahee lakester. Then the new NT4 that first made it to the salt this year, and the Berky mod sports. The crashed Salt Snake is also, sadly missing. Jack turns out a new Bonneville car or motorcycle about once a year. I'll include a picture of the Salt Snake.
I looked at it in impound and it was a reverse flow flathead with the exhaust out the top and the originals blocked off. It aint much for pretty but its a rocket as all their stuff is
There has been some discussion of seeing what a Dodge Fast Four might do in a new Jack Costella built V4/GRMR
if they are going to the effort of rerouting the exhaust ports, why not use a LaSalle block, ie. '37, which already have the ports run that way? or do the rules stipulate that a Ford block must be used?
Not that I know of. The Matrix Machine 'liner has been in the 160+ range. Creels tank has been over two with an OHC engine.
I searched the web for some good shots of the Nebulous Theorem III at Speedweek 09. Did not come across any, but some cool shots from Elmo a couple months back..... The Speedweek Record Recap - The World's Fastest Normally Aspirated Flathead built & tuned by Jim Stevens: 280 mph on Methnol; 253 mph on Gasoline! Jack Costella built an awesome car that just keeps on impressing, Rick Yacoucci, one of the premier pilots on the salt....Congrats!
