    Hey Roadsterpu...

The charity event will be on Sept. 19 at the Broiler. Kevin asked me to reply to this message as we are working on this together. Details will come along in the next couple of days. Thanks! Danny White

    Hey RPU,
Glad to hear that you're out exercising that rdstr. I see Danny White did post some info, I believe his site has a lil more such as a pre-reg button. He'll be adding more info about the Last Rock and Roll Show Rt 66 tour soon,so visit his site for the info.

The 9/19 date coincides with the Rte 66 Rendezvous that will be taking place in San Berdo. Danny will be coming out of Nashville a week ahead of that and he'll be stopping in New Mexico for a show there.

He'll continue on out to California and may stop by the Rendezvous:confused:
His event at the Broiler is on a saturday, so even though the Hatch poster states 11am starting time, Jim probably won't be ready for us till 2pm.
Remember guys, this is a fund raiser to benefit Harbor Interfaith of San Pedro. (They provided shelter for the homeless and get them back on their feet) So a pre-registration is required in order to be admitted to this event in order to get a count of what Jim will need food wise.

Danny (Del Torro) White looks forward to meeting all the HAMBers and signing his book The Last Rock and Roll Show which includes the Broiler in it's story line.

Or PM Del Torro here on the HAMB.
It's his party for the Broiler and Book Tour.
    Took a look @ his site again today 8/15, I don't
see the info yet, so hang tight and check
    back there.

    News from the Broiler.
As stated last week, the drywall is in, Taping and joint compound is on, scaffold is all round the building and the black paper and chicken wire is on in most places. Maybe next week new terazo and and stucco will be on and maybe even the Palos Verdes stone will be going on as well. Thanx 4 ck'g in

  11. Hi Kevin,
I had forgotten that a few pages back you said that the 19th. was an invitational fund raiser deal, so does this mean that the Broiler will not be open to the public that day or is it just a car show part that is limited.
    all looks good, Thanks Jim

We're working on having the Broiler open for the fund raiser, We can't confirm that the restaurant or the staff will be ready for the general public on the 19th, Fund Raiser participants who wish to eat in their car under the canopy may do so, infact I highly recommend to relive the DRIVE-IN experience. The inside should be open for touring if the there are delays in the construction and tables/booths should be done by then. Please remember that this is NOT the Grand Opening for the public, but a fund raising event to give to the needy through The Broiler, That Last Rock and Roll Show to Harbor Interfaith of San Pedro.
We hope to see you there :).

To Analisa, Adriene, Kevin and all the SoCal locals and Downey City representatives who worked to first save and then protect the remnants of Harveys Broiler and to Jim and Bobs for stepping up to the plate to make the rebuild a reality, THANX ! ! ! ! from all of us Harveys graduates of years past, regardless of where in the world we have traveled!

When I next return to California, I hope to offer my thanx in person.

Thanks for everything, Burly! We'll be waiting for you at the Broiler! You started it all with "Where Were You in '62?" -- it just took a little longer than we thought it would!

  17. Hi Kevin,
I was going through some old mags. gettinng ready to take them to the swap meet this Sunday, and I came across a Street Rodder from Dec. 1977, it has an article about a Toyota Commercial being filmed at the Broiler with some pics. of the building and some hot rods in the lot. Do you have this? can you get a copy from SRs archives? if not I can make a copy of the article or bring the mag down or something, it would be cool to display at the "new" Broiler.
    JimB.

    Burly,
Thank you for that. Russ and you made a deep presence in my then photographic memory, when you guys did the HARVEY'S BROILER REUNION CRUISE in 83 and spoke about it in the Dec 82 issue of Street Rodder.

It made an impression on me. Both Miss A's were ecstatic when that box of articles showed up in 2002 and had the Video of the cruise as well.
    Now that's forward thinking ;).

We couldn't have done it w/o your help and memories and looking forward to seeing both you and Pat soon.
Glad to also see you aboard the HAMB :D.

    Hey Rusty Gem,
I have a photo copy of that article by Too Tall Ganahl, It would be nice to have the original for the archives;) Bring it on down just the same.

Just got home after I detoured over there on the way back to South Whittier from my weekly karting in Carson. Got out and walked around on the sidewalk. I got kind of emotional checking it out. What really brings back the memories and emotions is just standing at the entrance to the parking lot thinking about the cars and the people during the Cruise Nites and driving in there in my long gone 56 Ford 20 years ago. I'm glad it's coming back and people can do it again. It's looking great!

    Thank you Burly,
You're article started a movement! Cruising there in the 80's was what I looked forward to every weds. Whether I drove a muscle car, classic or later a hot rod, I enjoyed what was constantly rolling in around me. In 1980 Van Nuys had been closed by the "MAN" so I didn't get to drive the Blvd that long. Whittier Blvd in Whittier did have a Blvd that had all kinds of Iron rolling down the lanes, Whether you hung @ Norm's Burgers or the Der Weinerschnitzel at the other end, there was always something going down.
One of my Fave memories was going over to Stick City to see what they had at the lot, then over to Street Rods-La Habra to see what they had.
Lots of cars on consignment as we just went through the Iranian Hostage crisis in 79 and gas was still over a $1.30 . Wish it were that now!

Saw the turnaround in spring 81 with the Bob's Big Boy Re-Cruises that took place from April till Oct and they hit all 3 drive ins-Glendale,Toluca Lake and Van Nuys. Went to the Broiler Cruise in 83 in a 68 GTO Rag Top.
Was hooked and couldn't wait till another, That took a couple of years.

All American Burger in Westwood was just happening and Harvey's Re-Cruises were just getting into full swing with a snack bar and all!-(Side Bar note here-That's where the black and white checkerboard tile came from)
I'm hoping that it will have the same effect on this generation and future generation of rodders to come.

  27. Wow Kevin I didn't realize your a kid!, cruising in the '80s?, man you missed some great times. We used to curise Hawthorne Blvd. back in the '60s, three lane in each direction with a parking median in the middle, some nights it would take an hour to go 4 or 5 blocks, hot spot was the A&W. We would cruise all night then head to the Bob's down Hawthrone towards De Amo for a Big Boy Combo and a shake.
Some times we would hit Hollywood Blvd, or Sunset, that was craaazy back in the late '60s.
My times at the Brolier were the '70s post GI days, '73- '77ish when I was living in Bell Gardens(yeah me and John Force, ha) and Norwalk. I left So. Cal in '81.
I am really pulling for you guys with this deal, very seldom in life do we get a chance
to "go back". I know it won't be as great as it was for you in the '80s but I know it will be a lot of fun and a bunch of new memories.
You all should be real proud of what you have accomplished, picture my hat off to you!
    Later, rustygem.
PS ask Joe about the Hawthorne Blvd. days and his VW club....

  28. You know...
seeing how Jim re-opened the Big Boy on Hawthorne and PCH a few years ago, a Bob's to Bob's cruise might be a cool deal.

Up Hawthorne Blvd past where the A&W used to be and jump on the fwy and head to downey.

    just a thought.

    Hey Gang,

The new issue of Rod & Kulture (#19) features an article entitled "The American Drive-in Revisited" which focuses some attention on the illegal tare-
down and the reincarnation of Harvey's as the New Bob's Broiler.

    I hope this helps some.

    Hey Altered Pilot,
Put a cruise together and come on down when we get it all figured out. That would be a great cruise. I'd do the streets though like rte #2 of the HHGC that we did in Oct 07. Places like Chips still exist and a detour could take em over to the Whichstand. That would be a fun day if only the participants can be given a history of the site that they are experiencing or that were once there.

    Hey Rusty Gem,
My Aunt and her boyfriends took me to all of these places as a young cruiser, She's 59 now(& would kill me if she knew that I posted this). I went to Harvey's with her on "Her Car Dates",cause I was thought to be great birth control :D that was 67-68.

My dad had a brand spankin new 68 Firebiird 400. We hit em all as kids, that way he didn't have to take us out of the car;). Henry's,2 EE'S-Alhambra, Yankee Doodle,A&W-San Gabriel, Henry's, Bob's-Glendale , Bob's, Arthur's (Arnold's on Happy Days) Toluca Lake-Burbank Finally Harvey's on Firestone. Can't figure out why I liked Drive-Ins and Hot Rods:confused:.

We didn't do the Hawthorne area with Dad, but my aunt's boyfriends took her street racing and wherever she went I had to go. The carhops always thought that she was a teenaged mom:rolleyes:. The boy friends knew better.....
