Mmmmm...currently pulling my dick in Tennessee cause at the moment no one wants to let me play with their shit. As for tire smoke, wait 'till you see the contraption I'm screwing together for myself right now!
Love this thread! I'm still s l o w l y assembling parts for my altered - haven't cut a single tube yet. I'll be watching this discussion develop and planning accordingly. I want a smoker! This was the original plan for the 7-11 coupe, but the owners got talked out of it. I was the driver for a while, but never got a chance to try running without a burnout first... I believe there's a small but lunatic fringe market for smoker tires right now. Once this racing catches on, look out - they won't be able to make enough of these tires!
Boy, no shit!! that should have a nice sound to it, anyone else ever run two blown wedges on fuel? I can't remember one. Lippy
Well, by all means, feel free to donate. I am so totally not too proud to take what I can get. Building this puppy old school..with whatever I can steal out of the grocery money.
If I were a rich man, your project would be financed - just your luck and mine that I am not. raiding the coin jar for gas money these days.
Nope, it'll be the first of it's kind. Twin never done with 440's, and it's a true Altered with 25% engine setback at front engine. These guys are looking to smoke the tires through the lights, I'm looking to fling the fuckers right off the rims.
Thanks. It only took 5 pages to make the point that we're not out to do a "cloud parade." Not bad. Again though...MID-SIXTIES STYLE. Smoke 'em off the line, HOOK ON THE TOP END. I'm pretty sure I've put the basic specs from my car on at least 10 threads, but here they are again, along with some more details... *165" wheelbase. Motor 31" out. Direct drive. 6+ degrees of dump. My ass is less than 4 inches off the ground. *MW 9.5" spool 3.40 gear, M&H 12.00 x 16 spec tires (100" roll out) on 12 inch rims. *Titan triple disc pedal clutch with hard faced clutch plates (set up to strike the tires, very little slip if any.) *Donovan 417, 392 bore and stroke. 6.5 to 1 compression. Isky cam .318 duration, .420 lift (intake.) 6-71 running all the current NTF tech except with the old style end plates, 1.25:1. #4 pump, 4-port hilborn with port nozzles set up by Gene Adams for this combination on 80% (i.e. Hat nozzles are .063, ports are #1-.068, 2-.068, 3-.066, 4-.066, 5-.066, 6-.066, 7-.062, 8-.062. Gene's flow sheet shows the main jet at .080. *3+ amp Vertex mag at 50 degrees. The plan up to this point is the above combination, no water box, 10-15 lbs. of air in the slicks with @40 lbs. of weight up front. MW has a modular, open 9.5" rear that can take serious power. I'm committed to my to my spool right now, but I've heard an open rear might be good for this from several people. There was at least 1 rail running an open rear in current NTF, but I never heard much about that car (it was lightly raced and was for sale on Ebay last month.) "Dude", at least your building a car, even though it'll be running like every other new "nostalgia" car on the track.
Conder your a maniac in a good way.......by the way that hemi "T" Coupe you were building....how is it coming along. I would give nuts for that thing.
"Smoker", no...self contined thrill show, yes. As for your set-up, no...there are several things that are not compatable with what you are trying to do. I've got all the respect in the world for Gene Adams...he gave me my first tune-up many years ago, and it's served me well..but your shit as it is set up will not be a happy smoker.
Gene's the reason I'm running a 3.40 gear as well as the fuel set-up. When I started my deal in '99, he was one of the first people I contacted. I really enjoyed talking to Gene and learned a lot. At the time I was planning on using the 3.9 gear current NTF was using. Gene told me he thought I'd be "buzzing the motor too hard" at @1000 feet. Back then I had a hell of a time finding someone who made a 9.5" pro gear, and Chrisman's hooked me up with the 3.40 which, from what I was told was the closest I could get to a "smoker" gear ratio for that MW set-up. As it stands right now, I'm pretty much married to the combination I have, but the parts are all new and built to withstand a lot more power than I'll be making. Again, I appreciate the input. I'll be sifting through it along with all the other (and sometimes completely different) advise I regularly get from the fuel veterans I'm in touch with.
Ok, well good luck with that then. You wanted theory, fact and application, I gave them all to you in a way the average house cat could grasp and probably apply, but I suppose that there is a deeper level of understanding that I've not become aware of in my lifetime persuit of zen-nitro. When you figure out how all this stuff works, please, bring me up to speed, but make sure you use small words, cause I'm not too fucking bright.
Yes, I want theory, fact and application and you've laid it down in spades! THANKS AGAIN. It's clear you love nitro and know a hell of a lot about it, so you've no doubt run across other folks who love it just as much and have their own ideas. It can get confusing real fast...Which tuner do I listen to? They all go fast, they've all blown shit up and they all think their way is right. It would've been great having you around when the motors were going together. But at this point, aside from easy to change stuff like mag timing etc. I gotta stick with it. I'm closer to running this thing than I've ever been, it's time to focus on getting to the track and start the learning curve there. I'd appreciate it if you dropped in from time to time. You can say "I told ya so!" where it applies...That's all part of drag racing. One more thing...try to consider building one of these. In ten years of grappling with this thing, I've received very little of what you've laid down. It's mostly "can't be done" or "so it's a smoke show you want." Trust me, this is the ground floor. Nobody's trying to figure this shit out but us, and when we do it's gonna be BADASS. If you want a challenge in drag racing, this is it. Steve, I'm all over that! Let's figure out how to make that happen. A new tire designed to look and run like the mid-sixties and hook on these compounded tracks is a great way to make a mark early for your company. I have no idea what will work, but the radial slick technology brought to light on here might be a place to start. The tire should be street legal too (cheater grooves cut), but it's got to look FANTASTIC. It may be the tire for guys building post thumbprint slick ('65 and newer) gassers and rails. M&H's rep told me once everyone starts running the new 13" spec tire, those beautiful 12.00x16 M&Hs will probably go out of production. Cars like the '65 Pure Hell AA/FA, Chrisman's Comet and the 554 fuel coupe would make KILLER, affordable (relatively) smoker style drag cars. They could all run this tire. Enough "PR"! Royal, that T has been on the back burner for quite some time. Once things loosen up a bit economy wise the owner'll turn me loose on it again! Lippy, that "weak knee'd driver" apparatus looks like a good idea, where do I get one of those?
Tim, they are custom built. Don't wait till after the holidays to order or reinforcement may be needed. ie, stronger winch cable ect...
I'm glad you're chimming in. I, for one, have always dreamed of drivin' a FED, a real one, not these "new" one's, but a "real deal", tire smokin', wheelie poppin' MONSTER, either a TF or Jr. would do, and it's threads like these that help keep that dream alive. The knowledge you're sharing is appreciated more than you know. This is a good discussion.....
Is there any other kind of drag racing ???????? I quit going to the track as soon as I figured out this was over. Not all of us only care about going another 10th quicker. The whole feel of the thing matters.
And sometimes that 1/100th of a second isn't worth it. When the crewchief sticks an apple in your mouth before a run, you may want to re-think your position as driver.
Yeah, that's good...but! Way way back, I had scored a deal working for a guy who had at one point gotten burned really fucking bad...and he was a total dick (who shal remain nameless). So after flogging the car and getting it into the lanes he walks off doin the superstar hotshot driver thing...his parting words "I hope for your sake you've got this thing ready for me". Right...so I run back to the pit, grab a bunch of chicken parts and hot dogs, and I tape them all to the rollcage...left a bottle of BBQ sauce on the hat. Sure, I ended up hitchhiking my way back home from the track, but how can ya put a price on something like that.
Maybe you oughta learn a bit about me before shooting your mouth off. I've tried to keep this positive but you asked for it... I haven't been able to "rely on" anybody but myself when you get right down to it. I've wasted thousands of hours, sacrificed and risked plenty re-inventing the fucking wheel over and over, from choppers to paint to rails to "pretty street rods" and there's always several motherfuckers like you, standing around talking shit, acting like you're the only one who ever sacrificed or paid your dues. I'd rather blow my shit up than have to listen to your lame ass postering. Fuck you.
Hey, don't ask questions you don't want the answers to. If you bother to read the answers, don't argue with the person giving them. Most importantly, don't get uncivil like that on a message board. Motherfucker me to death in a PM. or take a swing at me if our paths ever cross, but getting up in my face keyboard warrior style is very uncool on alot of levels.
There are quite a few folks interested in this thread can we keep it going on a neutral foundation before it gets locked. I have respect for both of you guys, help us all out we are in this thread for information and to learn. Thanks guys.
