I've got a good one. I've been trying to sell my car. Kid calls about it and we make a deal. Figure cool. Three days later he texts. Doesn't have the nards to call. Wants to offer me less, after we had agreed on the price. I politely text back no deal. Price is firmly what we agreed upon. "OK" was his reply. Three more days later he texts again and again the schmo wants to offer me less than what we agreed upon. I was pissed about it, but now it just gives me a good belly laugh.

Sit on it! I had a 66 Suburban listed for months on various sites, lots of lookers and questions, but no buyers. I had done tons of fabrication work and had some really quality parts on it. Just didn't NEED to sell it, so I didn't mind sitting on it.

I steered to a non car related site as a shot in the dark. It was listed for about 4hrs. The first guy who called said he'd be here to check it out in 2hrs. That was his drive time! He looked at it for about 10mins. Not really looking, seemed more like giving a show. Says he'd take it. Handed me a 1k cash deposit, and asked if it would be enough to hold it until he could return in a few days with a trailer. Paid cash and picked it up in two days instead.

If it's not a "have to sell", be patient, the right buyer will show up.

I got one cheap bastard customer that always tells me hes got no money to pay me what i tell him somethings going to cost him then calls the next week to tell me he just bought another car for some stupid amount of money and that hes already ordered all this new shit for it........Another customer who is actually a friend who shall remain nameless was looking to buy a motor from another guy..... he calls and asks ME to go look at it for him..... I tell him I have a WHOLE RUNNING parts car with motor and all for HALF what the other guy wanted for his motor..... and he proceeds to try to talk me down...... so now when someone trys to talk me down ..... I go UP!!! its worked a couple of times!

This is the key to selling. If you look at most of the ads out there right now they bleed of desperation. Words like - must sell, lost job, moving forces sale, have over 10k invested selling for 6k need cash.. All these type of statements attract what you are getting. If you are in a situation where you "have to" sell, you are going to get the low ballers. You may consider being real about it. I don't know of many things that you can put money into, buying new stuff for it and get your money back out of it. It doesn't matter what you have invested into a project, what matters when it's being sold is what the market at that time will bring and the right buyer. I have purchased and sold lots of things this year and made money doing it, part of it is your posture, part of it is your emotional attachment and part of it is the profit margin.

When the right guy comes to buy the truck you will know it. Don't seem hungry for the money.People will use this against you. I know it's annoying but their is alot of your time wasters.

That's about the way it works around here. About the time I start to think I have something way over priced, someone comes along and shells out hundred dollar bills.
Then you have the pleasure of telling the lowballers that it's gone AND you got what you asked. And then you get to listen to the "Well, if I'd have known it was for sale I'd have bought it." guys. It's always something.

Of the 100 that call...10 will show up...and 1 will buy.

Also, if you price something too much under market value, people think something must be fishy.

I'm sick of the first question almost always being: "What's your bottom dollar?" Also, a low-ball offer before I even start it up or unlock it for them. Stupid is as stupid does...

The car I am currently selling is my wife's Cavalier for 1,800 obo. They ask bottom dollar, I tell them $2,000. I've got some confused reactions with that. I try to have fun with them; if they are seriously looking to buy the car for a reasonable offer, I will take them seriously, but I am not in a desperate state to sell it either.

  11. Over here (Engerland Land) get pissed means getting blind drunk. So it's always funny when you guys talk about getting pissed. But not as funny as when you talk about trannies (that's what we call blokes who dress up as women).

All very childish but it raises a smile - sort of like when we talk about knocking someone up ;-)

However, getting back to the subject, I do hate cheap arseholes who don't want to pay a fair price for a decent part. I'd rather give it away to someone who needs it but can't afford it than sell it cheap to some utter arse who will crow about how he "stole" it off you.

I have a friend who is a loose cannon. He was trying to sell a ford once, don't remember what year or model it was, but he kept saying ford guys were the cheapest people he ever met, they wanted it for nothing. Finally one day he'd had enough. Some guy made a ridiculously low offer, he went in the garage, came out with a sledge hammer and started bashing in every inch of it right in front of the guy. Then told the guy to leave, and he scrapped the car.

my buddy always says theres an azz for every seat. be patient, laugh at the idiots and someone will buy it.

  15. When someone says "Will you take $X for it?" bit I really want $XX I just say "No." and I shut up. Either they'll come around or they won't. Any offer other than what I'll take is met with a simple "No." and if they really want it we'll eventually meet an agreement. If

Solution: put a higher price, then let them beat you to the price you wanted anyways.

When someone asks if I'll take $X for something, I usually tell them "I really don't know, lay it out in hundred dollar bills and we'll both find out." It's pretty annoying to answer yes to their question and they still walk off----and that happens quite a bit with window shoppers.

I would like to get a 40 ford project so that means the 65 country squire has to go,advertised it on craigslist with a decent price that also included all the extra parts and saying I would also like to trade for a 40. I got so many offers to trade for latemodel junk I just pulled the add and will keep it for a little longer.

  19. Yup, when I left the Army I had to sell my project 28 RPU, one guy was on the phone every night for two weeks about it. Wanted to bring a mate down to see it and sounded enthusiastic.
He had never built or even had a Hot Rod before this was to be his first car. His mate was a long time rodder though.
Set up a time for him to have a look, he arrived with his mate and I took them into the garage to check it out. He glanced at it, walked around it once, then hummed and harred for about an hour.
    Then he said,
'Nope, I don't want it', he then went into about 15 points he didn't like about the chassis. The body was on it and he didn't look under the car!!
They left shortly after and I got a phone call that night. He wanted to come back and look, I was pretty keen to sell as I was moving and didn't have anywhere to leave it so I said yeah c'mon back.
He did the next day, this time he crawled all over the car, in, out, under, around.
He then came to he same conclusion.
I got kinda pissed off as the car was at a friends place and not only did I have to drive 45 min to get there but it also annoyed my friends.
So once again they leave, though this time as they are leaving his long time rodder mate apologised for his mate and asked for my number.
I sold the car to him that night, he picked it up a week latter, didn't even try to beat me down on price either!
    Doc.

  20. that happened twice to me, one with my present 49 plymouth that I tried to sell when it was half done, the guy came out and looked it over while I was at work, the wife and son showed him the car, he just verbally tore it apart and told my wife he would call me later. When he called, he offered me about a third of what I was asking. I told him that i felt insulted and wouldn't sell it to him for any price and hung up on him. he called and left messages willing to pay full price, but I finished it myself and am still driving it. I also had an off topic travel trailer that a guy looked at 3 different times and just totally ranked it down all 3 times. I finally told him that since he found soooo much wrong with it, I just wouldn't feel good about selling it to him. He changed his tune really fast, but I still escorted him off the property. Sold it to a nice older couple the next day.

  21. Loose canon? Id say fuck wit.

  22. Good point. My other stock answer is "I don't discuss price witout seeing cash."

After my last experinece selling an O/T car on craigslist I put the next one on ebay.

If there's a city in the US with more curbstoners and scammers than los angeles, well, I dunno where it is. Craigslist brings them all out, from the guys that offer 20% of what you're asking, to the 'I'll come over when my sister gets off of work and can drive me out there', and everywhere in between.

I didn't get a *lot* for my car on ebay, but they came and picked it up and drove it out of state the same day, paid cash, no problems. *THAT* is worth something to me. Also, nobody seems to change titles here in los angeles, so they run up tickets and you're responsible for them if you haven't sent in your change of ownership notice to the dmv. A couple friends of mine got burned for over $500 each that way.

Parts, I've been pretty lucky meeting some cool guys actually, but I'd rather just give stuff away and get it out of the shop.

    I agree 100%.
An offer is is only fishing without the cash to back it up.
    Are you fishing or buying.

Stupid shit like you describe is exactly why I take stuff to the local auto auction. I know the fees suck, but are actually worth it because they take care of all the paperwork and INSULATE you from dumbass buyers. Also, you can sell with, or without a reserve.

AMEN... Your grief is directly related to how you set up the whole transaction. From posting the ad, to what the ad say's and how you set up the meeting. If someone tells me they'll be at my house to look at something at 6pm, I tell them I'll be gone a 6:30 so don't be late. If they show up after 6:30 I either don't answer the door or tell them I sold it. You have to control the transaction. No way in hell am I waiting for someone I don't know to come look at what I have forsale for more than 15 minutes.

Punkabilly you are right sometimes it's a bitchfest around here. Myself included. Like a bunch of old farts complaining but hey misery does love company. Been through it all too many times. Big block Chevy 396 had it 20 years, couldn't even get $1 per cubic inch for it. Someone offered $200 and I laughed. Bought a Summit engine cradle and I'm gonna rebuild it with a spray can and keep it for shop art! The pay forward thread is really theraputic for me. It's a POSITIVE bandwagon worth jumping on. I just got a PM from a dude on the other side of the country and I'm gonna send him a 33 Ford radiator he needs for shipping cost only. Makes me happy to see it used on someone's ride! A lot better than haggling:).
