The original photo sequence shows the car a second after it hit the rail with dust from the impact and photographers trying to get out of the way. Look in Steve Reyes' "Quarter Mile Chaos" photo book for both pictures.

My son and I were out at Pacific Raceways today watching the "Pinks" eliminations when a 9-second Willys got 90-degree sideways at half-track, he slammed the brakes hard enough to smoke the fronts, it didn't roll and he kept it off the wall! Hell of a show. Big applause as he came back down the return road.

Nobody mentioned the "zoomies". This car was way ahead of its time!

Now had they turned those scoops around maybe he Frieght Train would not have been the legend it is...did y'all take notice of the quality of build in the striped T-shirt?

That's the Gopher Twin, not Freight Train and although I agree on your last point, I'm not so sure the car wouldn't have benefited from having the scoops pointed in the other direction.

You are correct. I remember much written about this car in Drag News and other rags of that era. It was a winner! But, was there anything else like the "Train"?

Sorry... I retract that last question. The Freight Train was not alone in its class on the West Coast either. Other single engined competitors spoiled pay days for them. Bill Shultz (remember that guy? Over The Hill Gang) come to mind as being able to put the "Train" away. But few others...

Yes, That was one HELL of a save! unbelievable save! The closest I think I've ever seen without a bad outcome. Whew, good for him. I'm sure he was feeling shaky on the return road. Pinks All Out... Great show.

Had to be at least two, as there was a red car with twin Chevy small block motors and a black car with twin Chrysler Hemi's. I'm thinking there may have been a third one with twin Chevy motors as well, but I'm not certain of it.
