    KDF Wagen is correct.

Hebmullers were third party built bodies installed on a VW pan and running gear.

It's kinda weird the different perceptions folks have of stuff. I never thought of the Iron Cross/Maltese Cross as racist or evil (until the neo nazi movement started using it in the 80's/90's, maybe?). Just an old symbol of valor used by more than one country. Like I said in the post above, it's still used by MANY Fire Departments. I'll wait for Walmart to start handling stuff with swastikas before I'm impressed.

And it is kind of a shame that most discussions about the "Beach Boys Deuce" ends up on the swastika deal. It does show the powerful emotions associated with the emblem, even now.

Is this the picture you're talking about? I see a Confederate Flag, that's about it. This in the Pick-ups Limited club house though with Norm in his corner, maybe he had the other stuff at the the roadster clubhouse.

  8. First of all, that photo (taken in May of 1938 at the cornerstone laying ceremony for Wolfsburg) of the German soldier and the KDF, or "Kraft Der Freude" (Strength Through Joy) 1938 Beetle is NOT a Hebmuller, that was a 2 seater roadster made by Joseph Hebmuller and Sons in Wulfrath, Germany, from 1949-1951, when a fire at the factory ended production, with only 696 (according to the most reputable accounts) ever being made. They bought complete cars from VW, and then hand-built the coachwork from there.... Colonel Radclyffe of the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME) had the first prototype, with curved in windshield posts, and there are now kit cars made to resemble them, made from a VW convertible, with straight up and down windshield posts. If anyone remembers Geoff Petersen's "Hebroid" car that was on the HAMB, it was a brown, fenderless, Hebmuller clone, with great attention to detail, Super Bell 4 inch dropped axle, Kelsey Hayes wires, Coker wide whites, and it was well- received by the hot rod crowd.
Now that I've got THAT straight, I'll return to the on-topic stuff.

Anyone remember the logo for the old Schneider Racing Cams?

  12. Me too, just turned 58 in July.
I remember back in the Surf Days of the 1960s, Swami's, Trestles, Old Man's, etc etc every surfer worth his Gremmie Hodad status wore an Iron Cross around his neck, and had a Schneider decal on his Woody....

Yup. in the arly 60's the Maltese Cross or Iron cross was known in Southern California as a "surfer's cross"...I rode at Trestles all the way to Gaviota and back...we didn't think twice about the "surfer's cross" medal.
Larry T Is correct in that most all fire departments use the Maltese Cross as part of their logo.

The Schneider Cams decals and the "Old Heidleberg Speed Shop" t roadster altered on the drag strips was my first that I remember about the iron cross and drag racing.

Today its way overused thanks to the chopper guys and r-rod people.
As with anything, when anything becomes "mainstream" it is ruined.

  14. Jeez, Beach Boys,
"She's got a competition clutch and four on the floor,
and she purrs like a kitten 'til the lakes pipes roar"..
    and Gaviota....
Might be time to get my 10'-4" single skeg ( NOT called a fin, and we never had more than one per board) Solid color, redwood stringer Hobie out of mothballs, and give it a try at the Greg Noll Longboard Championships here in town a few months from now.
Thanks for taking me back, Mazooma1, I guess we better return to our regularly scheduled programming, before I run afoul of the "Off-Topic Nazi's" (LOL, j/k)

I remember after the car was in hot rod, there was letters to the ed questioning that. I think there was an explanation and he[Chili] agrred to remove it. Working from my memory ,but gives me an excuse to look at old magazines.

a friend researched the iron cross, and we talked alot about it.....Hitler basterdized a icon.....this was a symbol of brotherhood.. brothers helping brothers for a better world ... this should be used today!!!!!!! Help your fellow man, for the greater good.... hitler thought he was doing this.. wrong!!!!!!!!!!! he always ended meetings with "remember god is on our side" how ever sick and twisted.....the age old symbols were misused.... don't find fault with the symbol!!!!!!!!!

No it's not! Swastika is a German bastardization of the word. It even says it in the quote you referenced.

In the 80's here in Milwaukee the logo on the Wisconsin natural gas fleet vehicles was the same as the 7th SS panzer division.

A while back as well in Garage magazine some cat's were building a bonneville streamliner motorcycle with both german and british parts. It was painted with a Spitfire esque paint scheme but also had huge 1st SS panzer division key and shield on it.

Yes I built german armor models as a kid....

I would be worried about some idiot messing up the car with that on it. Fighting is fine but I wouldnt want to get into it with someone cause they thought I was a racist. I hate all people equally
