I have a Model A pickup hotrod with a '73 Camaro 350 V8 stuffed in there. I am using sixties style 2.5 inch Corvette Ram Horn exhaust manifolds. So, I have to run my spark plug wires under the horns. What kind of looms/retainers can I use? Help?
I used a couple of small rubber coated metal clamps...one at the edge of the oil pan for the front two, and below and behind for the rear two...you have to use longer wires and make sure they are held against the block tightly or they'll burn on the header...snake them back behind the block/manifold and then up...keeps 'em out of the way...but they are harder than hell to chase/change if you have to... Tri-5 Chevy's have a neat wire loom and heat shields for under the headers. Check out any Tri-5 catalog.
I always use spark plug wire shielding from a Corvette. Comes in a right side and a left side. The larger bolt hole is for a motor mount bolt and the smaller one ... goes on the block with a 1/4 20 bolt. They are actully " heat shields " and substanially help spark plug wire life also. I pick them up for " CHEAP MONEY " at most any automotive swap meet of any size but there are almost always some on eBay ... usually for not a lot of money. I had the set for my 3W ... Jet Hot coated along with the exhaust manifolds. So they should REALLY protect the plug wires from the heat
I ran the front two on each side "through" the side mounts (between the block and mount). Keeps them clear of the down pipe. The rears aren't an issue. Cleaned them up with the snap in looms with all four just past the rear plug.
I know that the 63/64 Vettes and up to the late 70's Vettes ( with a small block ) had them. Because I buy them at the flea market and swap meets .. I never know the exact year application. They are all mostly the same ... for my purposes. I have NEVER paid more than 15 dollars for a single side and usually get a pair for 20 to 25 dollars. I have used them since the late 60's ... when I bought a complete 327/350 horsepower engine from a 1967 Vette. It had them on it and I learned of their existance.
Mine are just routed behind, never had any problems. Ram Horns also coated. Not sure you have any space behind?
If you want a neat, tight setup find some of the resto places catering to early Vettes and '50's Chevies...some of the factory setups (with and without the shielding that came on corvettes) are very neat and compact. You can buy all the little clips and the catalog shows the setup.
Here's what your looking for. Corvette Central has them. Here's the link.. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort or Search for Spark Plug Wire Clip, fits 1956-82 $5.95 and 4.95 a pair One mounts to the pan and one mounts to a threaded boss on the side of the block
I like the looks of those heat shields and I need to pick up some of the clips for my ot truck. As a side note if you are running an HEI with ram horns the wires sets for 75-78 or so Corvettes that are designed to run under the manifolds work great on other applications. It has to specifically say that they do run under the manifolds though. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
OLD THREAD - have reference for Chevy V8 pre-made black 90 degree spark plug wire that run under exhaust manifolds for stock distributor (Non HEI)? some of wires have to put in with car jacked up - so, to save getting up and to make custom ones ----- check summitracing.com , and others, for spark plug wire retainers like: OER / CX 1845, 1846, 1847
@Jalopy Joker , I use these universal wires with the right angle plug boot installed: https://www.autozone.com/ignition-t...nce/wireset/p/duralast-wireset-1601/40596_0_0 I install the included distributor ends using this Accel tool and a channel lock pliers to squeeze the crimp tool: https://www.amazon.com/ACCEL-170040...hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584207590206284&psc=1 I wire from the plug back to the distributor, with custom wire length and routing.
3 pics from online showing one example of shields used - one is of my '63 Chev Nova SS with ram horns - very limited access, especially on passenger side - found it best to get wires for a big block. some small block wire sets say for use under manifolds/headers but, too short to run wires away from exhaust
