I remember racing at the drag strip there in Wichita in about 1971-72. I'd fill up the tank for about $6-$7(ethyl) bucks and head out to the strip and race all night until eliminated and then drove home with open headers right through downtown. I remember revving the engine (BBC) and watching the store windows vibrate in and out. Never did break one but had to have come close a few times. I haven't been back since 72 when the Army called and can't really remember much but if I was there, I'd definitely take part. Good luck with it.
Man, the cuts are so quick and the film is so bright it's hard to tell. I'm guessing the Pizza Hut was the one near Central on West St., but I wouldn't put any money on it.
OK boys and girls it's on, Saturday evening September the 20th , its "Draggin' Douglas" time. Mike Berry , who writes the Cars articles in the paper is hold his "reunion" car show that Saturday for all the cars which he has featured in the newspaper , plus its an open car show for everyone else, The show runs till 6:00 then it Draggin' Douglas time. We are not going to publish anything locally on this just on the HAMB and word of mouth around here.
Gotta get about a zillion hot rods, some time this week I'm going to go drive it and plan the route, the old Sandy's at Douglas and grove , i believe is a tax office now , not sure we could turn around there any more or not. Hoping to get someone to film it. We will also let the bar owners on Douglas know about it.
lets really start talking this up, like i said i really don't want to publiish anything on it locally, but still think we could have a hell of a turn out!
Don't know , quit going to Ark City years ago when they started letting new farm trucks and John Deere tractors enter.
I'll have to get in touch with Mike as I haven't got my RSVP as of yet.. Maybe it's the pontiac deal. LOL >>>>.
Getting a lot of traffic on this , i think we should just all hit Douglas from all sides around 6:30 that night, Mikes show in on west Maple so that will be a clean shot for those people.
I'll be in class until 5-530 but I'll be in town. Just might have to run over and check this out. If I make it anyone have space in a rod for me to ride along.I'll be in my boring daily.
Hey, Jack -- I am tentatively planning on bringing my Falcon down, but we may do the Douglas thing in my wife's cousin's old 38 Poncho! Looks like the weather is going to be great; this should be some kinda fun, eh?
Wheres all the details on this run. IM a cop (just kidding) I have a family reunion in Park City but still want to call as many people as possible. I think this is a great idea... Every friday nite several guys have been meeting in the parking lot behind Taco Shop on Central and West., Im not sure if Ridge and Central is the new location for that same group or is another crowd.
Jack says you can meet at the car show or people can all just hit Douglas at 6;30 sharp. Jack is off line this week. If you need more info contact me. Fuddpucker.
The neighborhood was not far from the Pizza hut in this commercial. I do believe the neighborhood was between Rock Road and Woodlawn, From either Harry or maybe lincoln to Kellogg. The Pizza hut was located on the corner of Rock Road and Kellogg, Southeast corner. Right? Carrie
Yeah, well so much for the cops thier stupid law! Where there's a will, there IS a way. We used park El Kbong across the street from Sandy's on Douglas took a unmounted racing slick, filled the cener of it with ice, had a gallon jug of Bali Hai in the ice, and everyone sat in the bed, filling thier Sandy's cup with elcheapo wine and having a good ol time. Since all of us were in A car, the cops couldn't say anything. Obviously this was before the public drinking law went into effect. LOL Carrie
5824 Avalon is the street address of the house this was filmed at. You can go to google maps street view and see it. The trees have grown a lot since them but you can still tell it is the house.
Now ya got me in a tizzy. Trying to remember the guy who shot this commercial, Walderscheid, or something like that, my Brother in law spent a lot of time with his kids. So was I right on the Pizza Hut? I remember the window well, but now I am wondering if the location was correct. I am pretty sure the building doesn't exist anymore. I grew up in this part of town, went to Southeast hi, so I am rackin my brain here. Carrie
